REMINDER: Dangerous candidates running for Anoka-Hennepin School Board

This election is kind of flying under the radar, but there's three competitive races, and they all have candidates who want a Ron DeSantis-like agenda running.

  • District 1: This consists of Anoka, western Andover, western Coon Rapids and southwestern Ramsey, and incumbent Erin Heers-McArdle has a challenger in Linda Hokeman. Hokeman uses the term "Parental Rights" on her site which is a dogwhistle that usually means anti-LGBT policies, and claims to be "fiscally conservative".

  • District 2: This is Blaine and eastern Coon Rapids. Zach Arco and Susan Witt are the candidates. Arco is sending out mailers that use all sorts of such dogwhistles and also sound like they were written by ChatGPT as the link notes.

  • District 5: Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, southern Coon Rapids and Fridley, has three candidates, Michelle Langenfeld, Scott Simmons, and Cyrus Wilson. Simmons is openly endorsed by the local Republican Party, as well as both the Minnesota and Anoka-Hennepin Parents Alliance, which is an anti-LGBT hate group.

We all saw what happened when extremists took over this board in the past. Please be aware and vote if you live in any of these districts.

Lawsuit accuses Anoka County of keeping withdrawal medication from jail inmate

A federal lawsuit accuses Anoka County and several jail employees of “deliberate indifference” to the medical needs of a former jail inmate going through heroin withdrawal who eventually suffered a brain injury.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of Deyonta Green, names Anoka County, two unidentified correctional officers and three jail medical staff.

It’s the latest lawsuit to allege inadequate medical care at a county jail under contract with MEnD Correctional Care, a Sartell-based private jail medical provider that filed for bankruptcy in 2022.

Green, then 25, was booked into the Anoka County jail on Feb. 5, 2022, after failing to report for a sentence for felony possession of a controlled substance. He acknowledged using heroin earlier that day, according to the civil complaint.

Over the next several days, Green suffered severe withdrawal symptoms, including uncontrollable diarrhea and vomiting, the complaint states.

Green had a valid prescription for Suboxone, a medication that reduces opioid withdrawal symptoms. But jail staff withheld it from him and instead provided him with “band-aid” medications for nausea and anxiety and over-the-counter pain relievers, the complaint states.

The lawsuit claims that despite his deteriorating condition, Green wasn’t provided medical care.

On Feb. 12, Green was found in his cell, covered in vomit, after an apparent fall. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a fractured skull, brain bleeds and acute kidney failure, according to the lawsuit.

TIL: Don't park in Anoka overnight

The city of anoka has no parking on any city street overnight between 2-6am so if you ever find yourself in this area, watch out. I got a parking ticket on new years for $17.

<begin rant>Seems like a shitty way to welcome guests to their city. </end rant>

Edit: this is all year round FYI.

Edit2: apparently this is common thing in the burbs so.. I guess don't park on the street when you visit.

Edit3: 2-6am

Educators of Reddit, would you send your kids to Osseo Schools or Anoka/Hennepin?

We're between purchasing two homes right now, one would send our kids to Osseo school (Fernbrook elementary, Osseo middle, and Maple Grove senior high) and the other would send our kids to Anoka/Hennepin (Oxbow Creek elementary, Jackson middle, Champlin Park senior high). Our considerations for schooling are good schools (but don't need the best or biggest schools), diversity and inclusion for all students is a huge plus, and wide selection of activities. We need bussing to be available for transportation, so open enrollment is not an ideal option for us. Which would you choose to send your kids to and why? Thank you so much for your opinions!!

Edit: Thanks so much for all of your opinions in this thread so far! You have given us a lot of context and resources to help weigh our decision.
