An Evening with Silk Sonic

I feel incredibly out of loop with this. When I hear the album, I recognize that its well made. I recognize that the production is pretty much flawless. I recognize it's sexy as hell. All signs point to me absolutely loving this album. But I just feel indifferent towards it aside from a few tracks and I don't know why. I'm just not as excited and its honestly kind of frustrating because I want to like this album.

What do you enjoy about it and what is so exciting about it that you think is worth coming back to?

marks the 1 year anniversary of the release of super duo Silk Sonic’s first (only?) studio album — consisting of American musicians Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars. While both gifted, a collab album between the 2 was unlikely as one was a mega pop star on hiatus and the other was a more low key artist off the heels of 2 acclaimed albums.

In 2017, Anderson was announced as the opening act to Bruno’s highest grossing world tour for 24K Magic. Years after the tour, the 2 would collaborate on music at Shampoo Press and Curl tocreate the idea behind Silk Sonic, a name given to them by the album’s host Bootsy Collins, as a collection of songs that would sound like a show during the pandemic: when not many were happening.

On February 26, 2021. Bruno would announce his return to music and the superduo’s album titled An Evening With Silk Sonic and the project’s lead single Leave the Door Open. Debuting at number 4 and later peaking at 1, it became an immediate hit and one of the most commercially successful songs of the year. Becoming the first song from Anderson to chart on the Hot 100, it garnered 18 weeks in the top ten.

Instead of quickly dropping the project, Bruno and Anderson would delay the release to let the singles breath before dropping the album. Stating that they “didn’t want to be binge watched”, their follow up single Skate was released on July 30, after LTDO left the top 10. It became a moderately successful song and the first time the second single of a Bruno Mars album didn’t hit number 1, only reaching 14. Previously announcing the release date for January 2022, it was pushed up to November 12 with the 3rd single Smokin Out The Window ahead of its release. It debuted at 8 on the Hot 100 and later went to 5 the week after.

An Evening With Silk Sonic was critically acclaimed as Bruno’s most well received album & debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 with 104K units behind Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version). A career best sales for .Paak, the project would eventually be certified platinum by the RIAA after its vinyl release. The album’s lead single would also receive 4 Grammy awards in 2022, continuing a 16 win streak for Bruno. What are your views on the album a year after? Did it meet your expectations? Would you argue that the artist work better together? Do you still re listen to its hits years later?

It's been years since the last time I awaited th exact release date of an album. Today I honestly smoked some weed, grabbed a drink, and just go to the album, hit play on track 1 and let it go through the entire thing. I enjoyed every song honestly. It's so much information that it's hard to process but damn. I think this is one of "best albums ever" material. What are y'alls thoughts on it? What's your favourite tracks that weren't released on video?

At least at first listen I think the trck that stuck with me most was After Last Night. I don't know, it just goes somewhere so different by the end of the track.

Still feel like i need to give the whole album some listenings befre gathering my thghts. What are yours?

I've been waiting for Charles to look at the rest of the Silk Sonic album because there is SO MUCH MORE TO TALK ABOUT. I've listened to it repeatedly since it came out. Maybe he can just look at After Last Night and Put On A Smile, but either way I'd love to hear his reaction and see a harmonic breakdown of the rest of the album.
