Amharic cat name ideas 🐈

I'm getting a new cat and I want to give her a cute little Amharic name, but I'm not fluent (just know enough to get by politely but can't hold a real convo). I also want it to "sound cute" in an English context too.

Some ideas I had:

  • dabo (cuz cats sit in the loaf position. but I've heard this is also a euphemism for lady bits so idk lol)

.

  • what's the female version of gashe? (I have another cat, and the new one will be oldest/is middle aged so I thought that could be cute)

.

  • Tahsas, since that's the month I'll adopt her in but I don't think it sounds that cute

.

  • kholo, cus she has little marks on her mouth that look like pieces of kholo she's eating lmao

.

  • ሪዝ for the same reason lol (but I can't find an example of it being said aloud so I'm not sure how it sounds)

.

  • other ideas?? :))))

Learning Amharic as a Receptive Bilingual

I am of Ethiopian descent with parents whose first language is Amharic. I can understand most conversational Amharic when people are speaking with each other or to me but I can't speak Amharic. As a kid, I wasn't encouraged to speak Amharic as my parents were told that teaching a kid to speak 2 languages would confuse my brother and me (🙄). They still spoke to me in Amharic at the time because they weren't completely fluent in English during my childhood. Over the years as their English proficiency significantly increased, less and less Amharic was spoken in my household, and my understanding and fluency diminished to the point where I can only respond to Amharic in English. I've noticed that there are also times when I won't be able to understand 5-10 seconds of a conversation due to gaps in my vocabulary. I feel stuck in my understanding.

I do, however, have a bit of experience with recognizing the letters of the alphabet. I can't make out specific letters but I know the base sound a letter will have if that makes sense (thanks to Sunday school.) As a receptive bilingual who also can kinda make out letters, how long would it take me to reach full proficiency, in both speaking and writing, but primarily with speaking?

Wanting to Learn Amharic

Hello everyone! So I met my father for the first time about 6 years ago and want to connect more deeply with my culture. Mom is white so I never grew up around the Ethiopian side of my family. I really want to be able to speak to some of my aunts, uncles, and cousins in Amharic but I don't know where to start. I live pretty far from all of them so it's hard to even practice it regularly. Is there some kind of app similar to Duolingo that helps teach Amharic?

Sharing an amazing Amharic app I made for my kids

For a long time, I ignored the need for my kids to be able to learn how to read amharic or even speak it correctly and one day, it hit me, the culture I grew up and the language I used to talk to my friends were lost,

I was really shocked, I moved to Atlanta more than a decade ago, and my kids (age 8 and age 12), both can't read, write or even speak correctly, I was embarrassed when my mom talks to them or when I take them to visit home and they can't even understand what the posters, books, TV shows are talking about.

I've built an app for my kids, and they really loved it, and I thought I would share it with you, it's expensive to run, it has AI and other computational intensive requirements, thus it has a price tag, please explore and let me know

Android link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haleta.am

What it contains:

  • personalized and scaffolded lessons made by real linguistics professionals

  • high quality audio recordings

  • personalized pronouciation tutor

  • 100 amazing folklore and cool stories

  • AI powered voice and text translation

I have added 3 days trial, so you can test it and see their reaction, I'll share one free coupon code if you have more than 3 kids, please DM me.

What aspects should I prioritize while relearning my native Amharic language?

Born in Ethiopia, lived there until age 10, then adopted by American parents. In short, I lost my native language and am now working to relearn it. While reading is manageable, speaking poses a challenge. Seeking advice on specific elements to focus on for improvement. Any suggestions?

Topic: Amharic spoken in Israel vs. Ethiopia?

I’ve been watching “Nevsu” and it got me wondering if there are any noticable differences or even perhaps a recognizable Israeli dialect of Amharic when compared to the dialects spoken in Ethiopia.

If anyone here could offer insight or direct me to published studies/articles, I’d be very grateful!
