The feud with American Top Team basically hurt Sammy Guevara and Proud and Powerful
false

The thing that is great about factions it that it gives time, matches, and exposure to a lot of wrestlers at the same time. With limited TV time you can put eyes on a lot of people. Even if you aren't wrestling you still get TV time for being there. When AEW started and Jericho made his Inner Circle it was a move to give these things to Sammy, Jake, Santana and Ortiz. We fast forward two years and to the end of the feud between Inner Circle and Pinnacle and we've basically come to the end of needing the faction. Sammy is over thanks to his vlog and skills as a wrestler, Proud n' Powerful are considered one of the best tag teams in AEW and over despite kinda stalling for awhile. And Jake...well Jake could use some time with Jericho still.

It was more or less confirmed by Jericho in an interview that he pitched for Inner Circle to respectfully disband after the Pinnacle feud. But Khan thought they could all stay together but continue to thrive. Source.

And Khan was right for a time. Santana and Ortiz were doing Dark and Elevation matches to get their momentum going and Sammy went to become the TNT champ. No longer bogged down by a long faction war they were getting time to shine on their own: they straight up don't need Jericho anymore. They were doing their own thing without the other members of Inner Circle being involved. I know people here say Inner Circle should have disbanded but it was working well enough. Then the feud with American Top Team happened.

The feud with ATT was one that would have two goals from what I could tell: use the master mic Dan Lambert to push Men of the Year (Scropio Sky and Ethan Page) and bring more eyes to AEW by using MMA stars Andrei Arlovsk, Jorge Masvidal and Junior Dos Santos. They would need someone to feud with. But who? The only face factions big enough to take on the size of ATT were Inner Circle or the Nightmare Family. But the Nightmare Family were embroiled in a feud with Malakai Black at the time. MAYBE Best Friends could have done it and put their long ass never ending feud HFO on hold but they didn't and it would have helped to have Trent back. Also I don't believe we reached the point of the feud with HFO reaching unbearable levels yet. Plus you needed skilled wrestlers of Sammy, Jericho, and PnP's caliber to have a proper match with MMA stars of little wrestling training. I dunno if these goals were met but the feud was a good one and did end on a high note for me.

But at the end Sammy's title run was put on a brief but devastating pause as he once again stepped in to the shadow of Jericho and PnP were once again put into another faction war and fell into the fold with the rest. They tried to help put the spotlight on Sammy during this feud by giving a title fight with Ethan Page in the middle of it but it wasn't enough to escape being blended into the background. Because at the core of the feud it was always about Jericho vs Lambert.

Now people were happy with Sammy losing to Cody (there were other factors to why Sammy's run was maybe the worst of the title's history but the feud was a critical part IMHO) and PnP disappeared (aside from two Dark and Elevation matches) until they got teamed with Kingston to hopefully get their momentum going again by giving them more TV time. Love to hear your thoughts on the subject because the whole thing felt like AEW booked themselves into a corner.

Edit: Forgot that Dark Order would be another face faction but they don't have that central mouthpiece like Jericho or Cody to go up against Lambert on the mic and they were involved with Hangman's title run also at the time

Did any MMA team ever had a better year than American Top Team in 2019?

I just saw a video of Michael Jordan (kinda ironically) talking about how talking about who's the greatest player is stupid and we should talk about who's the greatest team ever.

It made me think: did any MMA team ever had a better year than American Top Team's 2019?

I was kinda casually watching MMA since 2016, but 2019 is when I started following the sport properly, and it felt like half of well known fighters on every card were training with ATT.

In 2019:

  • Amanda was still double champion and had dominant defenses against Holly and GDR;

  • Jorge Masvidal had his breakout year, KOing Till in London, getting the fastest KO in UFC history over Askren & beating Nate Diaz for the BMF title;

  • Dustin Poirier won the interim UFC LW title after beating Holloway (I'll casually ignore Dustin's other 2019 fight);

  • Douglas Lima wrecked MVP & beat Rory Mac' to win back the Bellator WW title & win the WW Grand Prix;

  • Kyoji Horiguchi won the Bellator BW championship, becoming BW champion in Bellator & RIZIN at the same time;

  • Kayla Harrison won her first PFL Tournament, winning all her fights pretty comfortably;

  • Mateusz Gamrot sat out the whole year, but did so as KSW double champion;

  • Scott Askham won the KSW MW championship, beating KSW icons Michal Materla and Mamed Khalidov inside 1 year;

  • Adriano Moraes won back his ONE Flyweight title, also winning his trilogy with Geje Eustaquio in the process.

Did any other MMA gym ever had a year as great as this one?
