I miss you AltspaceVR

I miss the open mic, the parties during Covid, the TV like game, the Cards Against Humanity evening... Damn, that still is to date, the best VR experience for me.

I miss it dearly. Still no alternative with the same level of bonding?

Hi, Bruce from AltspaceVR here. Would like to address a few things.

Hi, Bruce from AltspaceVR here. Would like to address a few things.

Hey VR Heads,

Some of you may know me as Cymatic Bruce, I've been a part of the r/oculus community and generally the VR community since this "resurgence" of VR began. Wassup y'all!

I've also been with AltspaceVR from the beginning, and was disheartened to see a thread full of vitriol and misconceptions concerning our moderation team and what we are up to as a company. I'd like to attempt to set the record straight here, and also am happy to answer any questions that you folks have about what is going on at AltspaceVR.

  • Will swearing in AltspaceVR get you banned?
What the fuck? No. Our stance on profanity is similar to what you would expect in any real life public place. Its not that big of a deal. Keep in mind that our mods are mostly in three places: the spot where brand new users are spawning for the first time, the public campfire where lots of folk gather, or high profile events. If the swearing is extreme and disruptive in these spaces (i.e., screaming nothing but swear words at the top of your lungs) someone will likely ask for you to keep it down, or take it to your own space.
Important caviat here: In user created activities and events, the user that created the space has limited moderation powers. Meaning another user can kick you from their space for whatever reason. We have no control over what "ground rules" a particular user establishes for their space.

  • You guys are owned by Comcast! Thus, evil.
We are not owned by Comcast. Comcast Ventures is one of many investors in AltspaceVR. Not the primary investor. Not the largest. One of many. They have also invested in META, Baobab, NextVR, Spaces, Kite & Lightning, Dollar Shave Club, and a host of other companies that exist. Comcast/NBC/Universal is a huge company that has recognized that VR and AR will be important to content in the future, and have put some of their funds in the pot.

  • Your moderators are ruining the experience!
This is one we take seriously, and try to investigate the best we can. Up to this point, the vast majority of complaints have come from folks that were kicked or banned with reasonable justification. A few complaints were substantiated, and action was taken.
If you have experienced an abuse of mod powers, please give us the details so we can investigate. Support ticket
I would like to reiterate here: generally the mods are in three places: The new user spawn area, the campfire, or an official event.
YOU are the moderator for any user created event or activity, and we do not care about what you do there. For the record, user created events and activities are where most users spend their time in AltspaceVR.

Those are the main points I think, but I am happy to address others. I know there is a lot we could be doing better; I want to make sure that folks are mad at us for things that are actually true.

Best,

--Bruce

AltspaceVR might need a toggle for personal space.

AltspaceVR might need a toggle for personal space.

Firstly, everyone should try out Altspace if you have not already, the possibilitys to interact with people all over the world is amazing. But I have a small gripe with it currently, I would love to see your point of view on it.

I have been having a lot of fun in Altspace VR lately, but I noticed how some people get in other peoples faces a lot, especially with leap motion and Vive contollers, even if they ask them not to.

Sadly this is especially bad when a girl comes into the room. Since you can't really control the behaviour in an online chat like that, I would suggest a toggelable function, to provide a personal space that cannot be intruded.

It can really be uncomfortable to have some random person waving his hands in your face and coming up to a few centimeters to your face. It is a great example how immersive VR can be, when you instinctively feel like your personal space is getting invaded.

R.I.P. AltspaceVR I will miss you

I know a lot of you probably do not care that AltspaceVR is going away in March but I will miss it dearly.

I was on the platform at the very beginning using an opendive 3D printed DIY headset my phone and trinus. I then made the switch to GearVR in 2017 and had great fun playing cards against humanity until they ended mobile support. I still visited occasionally the past few years on my WMR headset as well as my Quest2. I made many friends and acquaintances over the years and although very dated it was a simple easy to use platform that anyone could pick up and ran on even the most basic of hardware.
I even got it running on an old Pentium 4.

That said I wish they developed it further maybe added legs and more tracking. Perhaps kept the android mobile support. At any rate just wanted to share my thoughts, guess I'll just have to see those friends in VRchat instead so no major loss.
