A place to share and discuss Cassette Futurism: media where the technology closely matches the computers and technology of the late 70s and early 80s. Whether it's bright colors and geometric shapes, the tendency towards stark plainness, or the the lack of powerful computers and cell phones, Cassette Futurism includes: Cassettes, ROM chips, CRT displays, computers reminiscent of microcomputers like the Commodore 64, freestanding hi-fi systems, small LCD displays, and other analog technologies.

Thought you'd all be interested in my adventure to build an Altair 8800 up from bare boards. It includes modifying a too-new-for-a-front-panel memory card design, and modifying Altair Basic and CP/M to use a different serial board.

Welcome to your friendly /r/homelab, where techies and sysadmin from everywhere are welcome to share their labs, projects, builds, etc.
Greetings! I filmed and posted a tour of my homelab, which is fairly extensive. I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think,

I have the above named dinosaur coupled with an LSI ADM monitor /keyboard. We also have an equally ancient dot matrix printer and all the manuals for all of the above. The only thing missing is the cassette tape drive storage repository. They have been in heated storage for the past 40 odd years.
I would like to find them a new (hopefully loving) home. But my research says to be aware of just plugging them in to see if they work. I would greatly appreciate feedback from someone in the Portland Oregon area that could provide assistance.

I thought I'd share a project I just finished up. I modified the Lifeboat Altair 8800 CPM 2.2 BIOS to read and write disk tracks over serial along with an accompanying python script on the PC side of the serial connection. This allows the PC to serve as a virtual floppy drive for the Altair.
Hope it helps someone, find it here:

This has probably been mentioned here before, but if not, check this out. Some rad person has connected an Altair 8800 (the original microcomputer!) to the internet, and you can play Zork 1/2/3 remotely. PLUS there is a live camera, so you can see the blinkenlights!
Here's the link:
I think this will be a really fun way to play this game. I want to at least get through the original three games so I can be ready to finally play Return to Zork, again. It's been over 20 years, and I used the book to get through most of it. I'd like to try and beat it on my own, this time.
