[F] A Supermarket in California, by Allen Ginsberg

This was a request, and one which I was only too happy to grant. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed reading it. Allen Ginsberg was a genius. My enunciation could be better, but c'est la vie. :)

Audio here.

What thoughts I have of you tonight, Walt Whitman, for I walked down the sidestreets under the trees with a headache self-conscious looking at the full moon.
In my hungry fatigue, and shopping for images, I went into the neon fruit supermarket, dreaming of your enumerations!
What peaches and what penumbras! Whole families shopping at night! Aisles full of husbands! Wives in the avocados, babies in the tomatoes!—and you, Garcia Lorca, what were you doing down by the watermelons?

I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys.
I heard you asking questions of each: Who killed the pork chops? What price bananas? Are you my Angel?
I wandered in and out of the brilliant stacks of cans following you, and followed in my imagination by the store detective.
We strode down the open corridors together in our solitary fancy tasting artichokes, possessing every frozen delicacy, and never passing the cashier.

Where are we going, Walt Whitman? The doors close in an hour. Which way does your beard point tonight?
(I touch your book and dream of our odyssey in the supermarket and feel absurd.)
Will we walk all night through solitary streets? The trees add shade to shade, lights out in the houses, we'll both be lonely.
Will we stroll dreaming of the lost America of love past blue automobiles in driveways, home to our silent cottage?
Ah, dear father, graybeard, lonely old courage-teacher, what America did you have when Charon quit poling his ferry and you got out on a smoking bank and stood watching the boat disappear on the black waters of Lethe?

He radiates vibes of faux and illicit’s a weird energy. And what was the whole deal with him in RTR pretending to understand Bobs new phase. Paraphrase: it’s about the ensemble. Showing us the beauty within the ensemble to see the beauty within Bob to see the beauty within us.

TIL during a massive demonstration against the Vietnam War on October 21, 1967, a group of thousands led by Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg, Jerry Rubin, and Michael Bowen attempted to levitate the Pentagon. The entire event that day is considered as a turning point in public opinion about the war.

[HELP] Poems like Howl by Allen Ginsberg (Sexuality and Spirituality)

So today I came across Howl by Allen Ginsberg in my university class, and I LOVE IT. I've never had a poem evoke such a reaction from me before. I especially like the combination of sex/sexuality and religion/spirituality as they typically don't go together, so these two topics formed together is just exquisite. I was wondering if anyone knew any other poetry that combines the two, I love it so much!

What Depp’s close friend Allen Ginsberg had to say about child abuse

What Depp’s close friend Allen Ginsberg had to say about child abuse

[obvious content warning: child sexual abuse]

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I just found out today that the writer Allen Ginsberg wrote the following sickening passage about child rape:

“Prepubescent boys and girls don’t have to be protected from big hairy you and me, they’ll get used to our lovemaking in two days provided the controlling adults will stop making those hysterical NOISES that make everything sexy sound like rape.”

Johnny Depp wrote a very fond article about his friend Ginsberg after he died in 1997.

I can understand and maybe excuse having one dodgy associate who you aren’t that close to. But a picture has emerged of Depp as a man who has chosen to spend his life surrounded by deplorable characters. They’re the people he seems to most admire and wish to emulate.

I’m the author of a new book on ALLEN GINSBERG, called World Citizen: Allen Ginsberg as Traveller. AMA!

Hey folks, I’m David S. Wills, a writer and editor specializing in the work of the Beat Generation (a mid-20th century literary movement). In 2007, I started a literary journal all about the Beat Generation, and in 2013 I wrote a book about William S. Burroughs’ relationship with the Church of Scientology. Today, my second book about the Beats was published: World Citizen: Allen Ginsberg as Traveller. World Citizen looks at the life and work of Allen Ginsberg, the controversial poet-activist who wrote “Howl” and “Kaddish” and “America”. He was an icon of the Beat and Hippie era, who was frequently seen at anti-war protests, and who crusaded for gay rights and legal pot. Ginsberg travelled to 66 countries before his death in 1997. In my new book, I explore the extent to which travel shaped his poetry, politics, and personality. I’ll be here for a few hours to answer any questions on Allen Ginsberg, the Beat Generation, or pretty much anything else.
