Alan Alda

I know this off topic in terms of M.A.S.H. but I’m a bit surprised that Alan Alda hasn’t gotten his Kennedy Center Honors yet for his groundbreaking body of work not only in TV but also film and stage as well. For decades, he had this incredible ability to make us laugh, to think and to feel. For that, he should be honored by the Kennedy Center.

Also he should honored for the Carol Burnett Award soon too.

TIL that Alan Alda met his wife of over 60 years at a dinner party when they were the only two guests who ate the rum cake after it fell on the kitchen floor.

Was it always supposed to be the Alan Alda Show?

Was it always supposed to be the Alan Alda Show?

I have read it was designed to be an ensemble show but Hawkeye just emerged as the main character. I call BS on this. Consider:

The opening credits list Alda’s name first. I get someone has to be first but still. Then we see Hawkeye and Trapper run to the choppers but only Hawkeye gets a closeup. Then he is in the lead jeep headed to the OR.

In E1, it is his idea to hold a raffle to send Ho Jon to his college.

In E2, he is the lead in getting the drugs in exchange for Henry’s desk.

In E3, Trapper is the focus for the boxing match.

In E4, he is made chief surgeon.

In E5, he wins the Moose from the sergeant.

In E6, he stars in the movie.

In E7, he goes crazy.

In E8, Henry is the focus when someone tries to kill him.

In E9, Henry is transferred out

In E10, he is accused of being a thief.

So early on, he is clearly the focus. Trapper was really the lead once and Henry twice at most. He is made chief surgeon. Later in the season, he writes a Dear Dad letter twice, he dates Edwina, and his friend hears the bullet.

So I think the producers decided from the beginning that Hawkeye would be the main character, which is what drove off Rogers and Stevenson.

TIL that Jamie Farr, Alan Alda and Mike Farrell who starred in the tv show M*A*S*H all actually were in the military and served in Korea (after the war). Farr wore his actual dog tags on the show
