Great Pretender is a Western Action TV Series in Disguise

Ok, now I exaggerated the title a bit to get your attention, but.

I'm probably being captain obvious here, but I think one of the main elements of Great Pretender's appeal, and that sets this anime apart from the others, is how western it is.

Style of animation and initial setting apart, the type of story, the plot, the original music (Freddy Mercury excluded), the kind of action/thriller (kinda?) genre it has that reminds me of other series and movies such as Leverage, Catch me if You Can, Wolf of Wall Street (kinda?#2), combined make this production so different, and to my tastes great.

Ah, and the fact that - I believe - this is one of the few animes where only a minority of the main characters is Japanese - in fact, only one, our dear Edamame, when all the others are a mix of British, French, and Iraqui.

What do you guys think?

Good Sci-Fi/Action TV-Series to watch on streaming?

I've been wanting to watch a good tv-series on netflix for awhile now, so I was curious if you guys could help me out. I like the science fiction/action/horror/thriller genre if that helps. I've seen most of the main tv shows such as lost,24,sons of anarchy. But I've also found some hidden gems like jericho, and survivors. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

Best choreography for fight/action scene?

Edit: for the love of all that is punchy please link the scene you're talking about!

What's your all time favorite fight in a movie or TV series? One that made you clench your cheeks, raise your eyebrows, or unintentionally blow air and say 'woooah" or if you were even more impressed, a strung out 'daaaaaamn' don't care too much about a good movie, just a fight scene that was well... Impressive.

My current candidate is the bathroom fight from Mission Impossible.

Yea, I have a post on /gaming, I'm trying to find the best of each world:)

Edit2: it seems like... who am I (rooftop fight) The Raid 2 (kitchen fight), legend of the drunken master (final fight), old boys hallway scene, daredevils hallway scene, and the church scene from Kingsman are the top contenders here.

Wish list for a theoretical line of "X-files" action figures from the TV series & the two films (1998 & 2008)

Wish list for a theoretical line of "X-files" action figures from the TV series & the two films (1998 & 2008)

Hey everyone. I didn't see a post on this, so wanted to start one. I've seen the entire X-files series on DVD & am planning to start watching the Blu-rays soon. IMHO this was definitely one of the best '90's TV shows, and also one of the best sci-fi shows of all time. It was one of the few shows ever to successfully combine sci-fi, horror, & also suspense/thriller elements.

Re: action figures based on the show, there really haven't been that many - and the ones that do exist are mainly of Scully/Mulder. So far, all we've seen have been: A line of McFarlane toys figures devoted to the 1998 film only; some 12" dolls/figures based on some of the main human characters; a Scully/Mulder from the 2016 series; and, a well-done "Flukeman" figure made by McFarlane toys circa 1998.....however, this was an online exclusive and was almost impossible to get ahold of.

While I agree that a line of "X-files" figures has the potential to be boring (since many of the main characters are just people in suits), I think if the focus were more on the aliens/creatures in the series, there could definitely be some interest in this line from even casual fans of the show.

Re: the company that should make these toys, I think maybe Diamond Direct/NECA would be a good choice(s), since they've both done a good job with other movie/TV related toys .

Here is what I would like to see - I think these figures should encompass both the 9 seasons of the TV show as well as both feature films (1998 & 2008). I've broken up the figures in Waves. And, I have the minimum of "normal human" (i.e. suited agent) characters in each wave to make it more diverse:

Wave 1:

Mulder in Suit

Scully in Suit

Flukeman (mutant in sewer from first season)

Eugene Tooms with "stretching" action (maybe his fingers could stretch like in the show)

Wave 2:

Assistant Director Walter Skinner

Werewolf from "Shapes" episode (S01)

Jersey Devil (cave/ape man from S01)

Basic Gray alien (various episodes)

Wave 3:

"Fight the Future" green large movie alien (1998 film)

Cigarette-smoking man

"Eve" twins two-pack (S01)

Rob Roberts - mutant from "Hungry" episode (S07)

The Great Mutato - mutant from "Post-modern Prometheus" episode (S05)

I miss fun action films like Beverly Hills Cop, Speed, Die Hard, Con-Air & Point Break.

I miss fun action films like Beverly Hills Cop, Speed, Die Hard, Con-Air & Point Break.

Later sequels, remakes or attempts at action films seem to either have this dreary, heavy, trying-to-be-serious-and-gritty thing or an awkward self-consciousness (e.g. Baby Driver) - either way it just kills the vibe. Without the fun and sense of oomph, I find the silliness of the plots just falls flat. Most attempts are just super-shit (e.g. Skyscraper, Commuter, Jack Reacher, Death Wish) or not very rewatchable (e.g The Accountant). I'm not sure why things went this way, but I miss these kinds of movies. I can't think of a single one since maybe Taken that has that high rewatchability factor, where if you happened to catch it on TV half way you'd find yourself compelled to finish it? I know a lot of you will likely say John Wick, Fast and Furious or MI films, but for some reason while they're ok, I don't fall in love with those movies in the same way.

Edit: Yes, I know I didn't include every relevant example: Lethal Weapon 1-3, True Lies, Last Action Hero, Tango and Cash, Last Boy Scout, Escape From New York, Under Siege, Rush Hour series, The Rock, Face/Off, Commando, Air Force One, The Warriors, The Running Man, Breakdown, there are many more deserved shouts.

I thought I'd compile some of the more common modern equivalents that have been mentioned over and over in my inbox, some of which I do love:

- The Nice Guys

- The Other Guys

- Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

- Upgrade

- Hardcore Henry

- Stuber

- 21st/22nd Jump St

- Hitman's Bodyguard

- Mad Max Fury Road

- Dredd

- Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle

- Fast Five

- Hot Fuzz

- Kingsman

- Crank

- Olympus Has Fallen

- Escape Plan

- Get The Gringo

- The Man From U.N.C.L.E

- Point Blank (2019)

- Lethal Weapon TV Series

...also, on the "maybe you've changed/its just nostalgia" thing. The thing is, if I rediscover and older film I'm not as familiar with, like 48 Hrs or Heat (the 1986 Burt Reynolds one), I still tend to enjoy them more than a modern action film. There's something unique about the atmosphere, writing, music, chemistry of actors that's hard to define. Modern stuff tends to feel more 'sharp' and self-consciously perfect looking, green-screeny, written by committee and re-written/edited to not offend a bunch of people etc. Not always of course, I appreciate its a generalisation. Also the whole 9/11 thing stifling the overall fun out of films, leaning more toward the intense/serious/threatening vibes.
