A new alternative energy source for mining bitcoin...

When life gives you lemons... use them to mine bitcoin!

I recently came across lemon batteries, so in the spirit of being silly - lets see how many lemon batteries we would need for us to mine some bitcoin.

So, a lemon battery can produce around 1 volt and 0.00024 amps.

And lets say that the current network hash rate for Bitcoin mining is 400 EH/s, with the energy consumption for Bitcoin between 100-150 TWhs.

To get 1 watt - we need 1 volt at 1 amp, and to get 1 terahash per second, we'll need 1 trillion watts.

So to power 400 EH/s:

400 EH/s * 1 trillion = 400 quintillion watts.

So here's the silly part - lets see how many lemon batteries we'd need:

400 quintillion watts / (0.00024A * 1V) = 1.67 quintillion lemon batteries, which would be 3.34 quintillion lemons.

That's 3,340,000,000,000,000,000 lemons if we use two lemons per battery.

The world produces around 18 million metric tonnes of lemons per year - which is approximately 150 billion lemons.

It would take us 22,266,666.67 years to produce 3.34 quintillion lemons to generate enough power to mine bitcoin.

Maybe not, then.

Seventy-three percent of Americans say they prefer emphasizing alternative energy, rather than gas and oil production, as the solution to the nation's energy problems. This marks the highest percentage of Americans prioritizing alternative energy since Gallup first asked the question in 2011.

Wind Energy Storage / Alternative Energy Sources

I just got the game about a month ago and I’ve been obsessed with it since.

As a disclaimer: I know this game is in EA, and of course the game will continue to grow with new additions as the years progress. Below are things that I want to speculate about what should be implemented. If you have anything to add, please discuss in the comments with me.

Despite making several worlds and working my way into the Bronze Age, I’ve never gotten to wind power due to high flax demand, and I haven’t had a chance to make a proper farm.

That being said, I’ve done a lot of research on wikis on windmill setup and gears and such, but I see the automation is highly dependent on whether the wind is blowing or not.

I’m wondering if the vanilla game will ever implement anything like weights/coils/springs as energy storage to keep your gears spinning when wind is not powering your sails, similar to how a pendulum clock uses weights and watches use coils and springs.

We have a “clockmaker” class even in the game, so why couldn’t that class have more use regarding automation? I would love to see something like this in the future

Then we have those thermal pools, but no way to harness thermal energy as of now. I’ve seen other posts about how Ancient Roman architecture used hot springs under buildings to heat them, which would be a fantastic addition.

I see a lot of posts on alternative energy, but I haven't seen a lot on Nuclear.

Sustainability is the ability of system to endure. While most people associate the term with the environment, true longevity requires social and economical sustainability as well as ecological sustainability.

I see a lot of posts on alternative energy, but I haven't seen a lot on Nuclear.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I'm like, 90% positive nuclear is WAY cleaner than solar/wind what have you, and is way more efficient in every aspect. And before you start dropping chernobyl pictures, frankly, I do not care. We all know that was due to man made error. I guess I'm biased, but I'm always looking for more information, and I'm open minded.

Edit: I'd like to give everybody a big, wet, warm, sloppy apology. My 3am brain could not comprehend the search bar for this? Big dick trip on my part, sorry. But thank you none the less for feed back.

Alternative energy company is back at it again

Heads up in case anyone else sees these guys. Some scrubby guy just knocked on my door with a couple of contractor-looking guys in the hallway behind him. He tried to make it sound like he was there for some sort of inspection, and when I opened the door he said I hadn't filled out some form that had been mailed to me and he asked if he could enter my apartment. I shut the door on him when I realized what was up. I'm on the top floor and I hadn't buzzed him in.

Electrical engineers in solar power/other forms of alternative energy

Are there any electrical engineers out there who work in the solar power industry or in another form of alternative energy?

If so, what specifically do you work on? What's the demand like for electrical engineers in your sector? What were your internships during undergrad? Do you enjoy your job? Do you think you made the right choice?

Current ECE undergrad here (rising sophomore). Eager to explore career opportunities. Starting to plan my first directly relevant, engineering-based internship for in between my soph and junior years, wondering what to look for.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Learn to love ash, store it, trust me you are REALLY going to need all of it later where you won't be able to make enough.

  2. Mechanical inserter DO NOT need power of any type to function.

  3. Yellow and Mechanical inserters have 1 filter slot (this is the key to early game setups)

  4. Coal Miners have +1 mining range

  5. Underground and filters are your friend

  6. Underground length is greatly increased in Py

  7. DO NOT OVER BUILD. Your early game builds will be completely replaced by new forms. This method continues until around logistics science tech level.

  8. Geothermal is your 1st early game power item to get you through.

  9. It takes 2 steam boilers to run one steam engine (you can feed steam from both ends) and then run at 1/2 efficiency due to "cool" steam -vs- hot steam

  10. The pack IS NOT balanced around biters. They WILL destroy you at default settings. Most turn them off some greatly reduce, your mileage may vary.

  11. Cottonguts breed totally different from other critters, read the recipes carefully to see the difference.

  12. All Alienlife buildings REQUIRE modules of their animal type to run.

  13. Tech levels will take your ore processing from 8 ore - 1 plate to as high as 1 ore to 100 plates late game.

  14. Early tech upgrades can invalidate builds. Later tech levels generally extend / enhance builds versus replace them.

  15. You have to use a pump to pull liquid out of a tailings pond (of the ponds are huge now)

  16. Tailings ponds will overflow onto the ground and corrupt the land, you have been warned.

That should be enough to help you get started.

TIL that in 1917 Alexander Graham Bell predicted that "the unchecked burning of fossil fuels would have a sort of greenhouse effect" on the planet, and argued for the use of alternative energy sources such as solar energy.
