Ever watched a movie that you felt you should like? A movie that on the paper was the kind of movie you should enjoy? Mine was A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
This was a movie about a topic I like (artificial intelligence) by one of my favorite movie directors (Spielberg) and featuring good actors, including Osment whom I had seen just two years earlier in The Sixth Sense and who also does a great job here. The movie got good reviews as well.
Yet, when I watched it, I didn't like it. I could "appreciate" a lot of things about it but I felt no connection. Or more specifically, I felt no emotion. I didn't like anybody, hate anybody, or care about what happens. Even a certain separation scene which should have had me feel deeply did nothing for me. I can't explain why.

So, like many, I originally maligned AI due to its hokier aspects. Mainly the stuff I’d categorize as “mushy.” Stuff that was actually from Kubrick, not Spielberg. Like many of you already know. Didn’t matter to me, still thought it was hokey.
I hadn’t watched the film in years. But, a few days ago, I popped in back in on a lazy afternoon. And holy shit.
Where I originally found the film to be sappy, the drama really got me. Unrequited love, the failure of orga and mecha to ever fully coexist in a loving way. It tore my heart to shreds. Osment was ON POINT as David. I’d possibly rank this higher than his Sixth Sense performance.
Just the whole Pinocchio tale of it all really, really got to me. The whole purity of it all, of a robot boy and his fucking adorable robot bear on a quest, in this very sexualized, dystopian future Spielberg created.
I cannot believe how wrong I originally got this movie. It’s actually great.

I had always avoided this movie when I was a kid and throughout most of my life because I thought this was a thriller film; turns out I had been confusing it with "I, Robot" (2004) all this time. Watched it last night with my boyfriend because it's one of his favorite movies.
It was...not what I was expecting. I had no idea that there would be a whole misadventure with a gigolo robot, and honestly, the film just...kept going? Like, at 4 different moments in the film I thought that it would be the end, but it wasn't. Like, surely when the police arrived at Rouge City, he would be reunited with his family. Or surely when he found the man who created him, this would be the end. Or surely when he found the Blue Fairy at Coney Island, the film would end there. But no. And at one point I was like "Geez...how much more can they draw this out?"
But at the same time, it didn't feel drawn-out? Like, I would've loved to have the focus of the film be on the family dynamic, and have more resolution with the mother, the robot child and the human child. But then the film was just the adventures of a misunderstood child robot.
The special effects of the robots have aged fantastically well. The super futuristic robots of the year 4000(?) aren't super great, but that's entirely CGI so it's understandable. I was constantly impressed by the robots and the visuals, and it really helped me get into the film. The set of the city of New York under water was also really well done (it's always a bit disturbing to see the Twin Towers in a film nowadays, especially one that takes place in the future, but hey, who could've known).
Haley Joel Osment was really great. Believable as a robot, believable as a kid, and believable as a robot struggling with the fact that he's not a real boy. He really helped to hammer home the moral and dystopian subjects of the movie. I definitely think I'll be mulling over the film for the next few weeks.

The first time I watched it I was in 3rd grade. Even as an adult it still makes me feel as no other movie has made me feel.
