Is Affinity designer used by professionals?

I’m extremely interested and wanting to learn graphic design, but I only have experience with procreate and I know it’s more focused on illustration rather than vectoring and the more specific parts of design. I’m also wondering if this app is good for someone who is looking to get into graphic design long term.

What do you use Affinity Designer for?

I love using Affinity Designer and sometimes I will just create vectors of logos just to use the program, but I often wonder about use cases for vector graphics. What do you do with your creations? What do you use Affinity Designer for?

What's the point of Affinity Designer?

I'm in the middle of a free trial for the Affinity 2 suite of design software. This set, which they're really trying to sell as a bundle, consists of Affinity Photo 2, Affinity Designer 2, and Affinity Publisher 2.

Affinity Publisher can be used to design an entire book, from top to bottom. It does text layout, image placement, layers, and everything. It's great.

Affinity Photo is something I had to open for five minutes, one time, to verify that my completed product didn't exceed color saturation limits for publishing. I could see that there are a lot of picture editing tools in there, though. If I really wanted to do crazy Photoshop levels of manipulation, then this would be the software to do it. Fine.

Affinity Designer... I feel like I'm missing something. I've opened it three times now, and poked around, but I still can't tell what I'm supposed to do with it. Going by their quickstart guide, it almost seems like a super complicated version of Paint. There are tools for generating curved lines, using nodes, which I recognize as not knowing how to use. Is this how you're supposed to generate the base images, which you then modify with Photo? I just don't get it.

Affinity Designer vs. Adobe Illustrator.

I was reared on Adobe. Then, the corporate world sucked me in for a decade and I put down the tools. I started using Affinity a year ago for personal use at first, which has expanded into some paid freelance work.

“Adobe is the industry standard” so occasionally I have to find workarounds for dealing with PSD or AI file types. When I’m exporting it’s always PNG, JPEG, SVG or PDF formats, it’s rare a client requests a working file.

It seems to me like the functional capabilities are equally as good. So - I’m curious about how many working designers are using Affinity? For designers who have tried both, what is your preference?
