Dark Horse Bridges Podcast Guest: Adam Ragusea

Not sure how many of you guys are familiar with him, hes apart of food youtube. But hes touched on politics previously in his podcast. Hes similar to Dman in that hes a moderate leftie. Could be an interesting conversation to fully hear his political takes. Heres a clip of him talking to Dr. Mike about libertarianism

Is Adam Ragusea really not progressive enough for you? (CFA comment)

I'd like to have a respectful and nuanced discussion about Adam and the Chick-fil-A video/pod.

The CFA video surprized me. Not because he was venturing into politics, as some people have complained about. While the CFA controversy was politicized, the CFA video was about the ethics of eating CFA in 2023. And he's delved many times into the ethics of eating certain foods or using certain food related products.

What surprised me was that, to date, he has virtually always come down on the more progressive / left wing side of such issues - and this time he didn't.

I think we could probably all agree that:

  1. Overall Adam seems like a relatively progressive and more left wing than right sort of guy (at least in his public persona).

  2. It seems safe to guess from the comments in this subreddit and the fact that we are here voluntarily that most of his audience would be broadly similarly progressive and more left than right on social issues.

  3. Adam being a smart guy who's clearly aware of his demographics and audience comments is probably aware of this.

I mentally play a drinking game when I'm listening to his pods: (mentally) drinking every time Adam light heartedly self flagellates for being a white man and every time he tries to head off negative/pedantic comments with a "and before you send me an angry DM saying...".

So I was especially surprised to see him present a take that he would know would alienate some of his audience and at least run against the grain for a lot of of his audience. And on that level I admire him for making it.

Still, the whole video I was thinking: why is he doing this?

I suspect the answer is: because he LOVES the taste of CFA and wants to justify to himself and the world his choice to keep eating it.

Now as long as that hasn't caused him to present lies or overlook inconvenient truths then that's perfectly fine.

I'm "an outsider" as Adam describes not living in the south and never having eaten CFA. Before listening to this my view was CFA = extreme Christian homophobic bad.

An important point that Adam makes that I agree with is that the point of a boycott is to effect change. If the boycotters get what they want (regardless of whether the target was happy to do it) then the boycott should be lifted. If it's not then the next company that is boycotted will have no incentive to change.

The core factual claim in the video Adam makes is that for a time CFA directly funded anti-LGBTQ groups but as a reaction to consumer backlash in around 2019 it stopped (except for possibly some isolated oversight examples or more morally complicated examples). It seems from links posted in this subreddit that claim appears true but the Cathy family still personally donate their money sourced from CFA dividends to those kinds of abhorrent groups.

Adam deals with that by saying if you don't buy things from company's whose owners/board members are A-holes then you won't be able to buy anything.

I think that's a reasonable position to take. It's up to all of us where we set our moral bar on these kinds of thing and if eating at CFA in 2023 doesn't sit right with you morally then you should boycott it. But I think we should be honest with ourselves about it: is it just that you know a lot about CFA and the Cathy family and you've not looked into the ownership structure and owner's moral views of other company's whose food/gas/clothes/appliances? This isn't an argument that if you can't solve all issues at once you shouldn't solve any. It's an argument that we should recognise that in the pantheon of morally complicated companies, perhaps CFA in 2023 is not the most appropriate target of a boycott.

As for the comments that Adam Ragusea has sold out or is promoting homophobia: if he's not progressive enough for you then everyday life must be pretty tough.

Meant with love.

For those missing a masculine role model... Adam Ragusea

For everyone who is missing pre-transition Abigail as a positive "male" role model on YouTube: may I suggest Adam Ragusea? He runs a cooking channel. I think he models a kind of masculine life/energy/vibe that may be a good fit for many. He's seemingly a pretty devoted husband and father, and is self-confident and supportive of others. He talks about how he used to use cooking as a way to show off, but now uses it to give pleasure and care to himself and others (which sounds to me like a transformation from immature 'boy' to mature 'man'). He's all about self-acceptance. Plus, watching his videos, you might learn to cook some things along the way! Plus, he seems to be actually a man!

Here's a video he made on why eating spicy food doesn't make you tough, in which he addresses toxic masculinity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX8ri6fHfps

I'm not a man so idk what y'all like, but I think Adam's a cool dude. His content is not as overtly political/moral/philosophical as Abby's (Abi's? How is she spelling this?) but I think he does model good male conduct.

Not that we need to 'replace' Thorn, but Ragusea reminds me of pre-transition Abby.

Adam Ragusea

Adam Ragusea has kinda blown up on YouTube over the last year. I do generally enjoy most of his content as his recipes generally produce good results. However, sometimes I find his content a bit... vitriolic. It sometimes seems as though he is making his videos with the intention of proving someone wrong rather than for the sake of just making great food. It's not necessarily a bad thing. He is usually right, after all. I was just curious if anyone else picked up similar vibes.

Podcasts similar to Adam Ragusea's?

Hi everyone! Like many of you, I am a thorough enjoyer of the pod, it's easy-going and "cozy" atmosphere, and I enjoy the topics like food science applicable to the everyday cooking, food history and such.

The pod is released once a week, and I cherish it, and keep for a specific situation, like cleaning the kitchen, or when cooking something interesting. Unfortunately, one episode is not enough for one week, and so I'm looking for additional podcasts with the same "vibe". I don't want for Adam to make more episodes, as that would potentially reduce the quality of the episode, as well as put additional strain on Adam himself.

What similar podcasts do you also enjoy listening to?

Adam Ragusea sucks

I hate this channel. I feel like every time he's brought up on Reddit people go fuckin crazy like he's a genius or whatever, but he's just an arrogant jackass who doesn't actually provide much helpful information. Like at one point he gets all up his own ass about using salted butter because "you're just gonna salt the food anyway" like he cracked some kinda code. But there's a reason that recipes use unsalted butter. Like, a lot of recipes. He's like if r/cooking became a person and got way too confident in their stupid hacks. Not to mention, he's a douche in the comments. I saw a video criticizing his video about pan-frying instead of deep frying (side note: in that video he complains that you have to bury used fry oil, which you aren't supposed to fucking do) and he left a huge diatribe in the comments in response. Take your head out of your ass, you're a YouTuber not a Michelin star chef.

Has anyone here started watching Adam Ragusea because of Slime? What do you think about his retirement video?

I used to watch Adam long before I started watching Ludwig and The Yard, so when Slime talked about him for the first time I was surprised he also watched him (Last time they talked about him on The Yard he mentionned he doesn't watch anymore though.) But aside from the great food content Adam produces, his other videos, podcast videos also, are the ones I really really enjoyed. He is a very well spoken person who presents his ideas in a way that makes my brain orgasm, the way he covers all his bases when presenting his arguments or even just simple plain facts is really satisfying for my mind.

But recently he uploaded a video titled: On therapy, tigers and retirement. Another banger, he explained everything going on with his work life etc. And he addressed the scary topic of retirement (Semi-retirement 🤓.)

Which brings me to why I am posting this here. Mainly because this subject is heavily discussed right now, Ludwig talked about it so many times already and some of the points Adam made are the same ones Ludwig talked about. For example, Adam talked about feeling gulity about not making money anymore because it will affect other people in his circle, like his agent who he says he is very grateful for; which for me is nearly the same argument Ludwig makes about Offbrand, even though as Adam said in his video, his agent have multiple clients so it's a bit different from Offbrand employees who would be jobless if Ludwig retires.

Another point I wanted to discuss by sharing this post, is what Adam said at the end of his video, that he doesn't want to get more popular, so he won't be doing any shows that will bring him more attention than he already has, which I believe means that any hope of seeing him do The Yard is gone now.

I know Slime hates people like me who are brain rotted by watching too much Youtube, who wants to see their favorite internet creators interact, but please man that's the only thing we have please give us a break. I live in China where it's impossible to make friends let alone ones who share the same interests as me, stuff like this is the only thing that brings joy to my life.
