Just watched an old movie nobody's talking about anymore? Post it here!
The only things I knew about this movie going into it was that it was based on a play, launched Marlon Brando into stardom, and that The Simpsons referenced it on "A Streetcar Named Marge" (1992). But yesterday I saw it on a DVD bargain bin, along with a 3 DVD version of Gone With the Wind, and decided to buy them almost on a whim (it's merely a coincidence that both feature Vivien Leigh on the lead role).
Boy, I was not prepared for what I saw.
The film is so gripping from start to finish, that you can't avoid getting invested into the lives of these frail characters and dread the downward spiral Blanche goes through, thanks to Stanley's constant humiliation of her being.
Brando, of course, is an absolute powerhouse, giving so much apparent depth to a character that could easily have become a caricature of an abusive husband. He's clever (maybe the most intelligent of the cast), and his cruelty is absolutely calculated and crushing to behold. It's a character that absolutely represents what uncaring individualism can do to others. I was even a bit surprised that it made him a sex symbol, until some follow-up reading made it clear that it was through a combination of eye candy and the choice to ignore anything beyond the iconic "STELLAAAAA!" scene.
About Leigh: I initially wasn't convinced by what I was seeing, all with the exaggerated (to my ears - I'm not American) Southern accent and theatrical performance she gives, but I quickly became used to it, so when
The black & white cinematography was incredible, with its exquisite use of chiaroscuro, and magnificent compositions that not only affected the "standout" scenes, but most of the film to show how the characters relate to each other in any given moment.
It sincerely left me quite shocked when I finished watching it, so I recommend it. 11/10.
Note: try to avoid the 2001 DVD of this movie. It appears the transfer was from the Laserdisc era, full of blemishes, and looks absolutely awful on an HDTV. Luckily I have access to a CRT for just such cases, where it looked alright (though the blemished were still very noticeable).

A place to share articles, stories, photos, and videos from America's halcyon days. The cars, the clothes, the music, the movies, the art, and the culture: it all belongs here. Feel free to post items of substance - the Civil Rights Movement was in full swing, the Cold War and Space Race were hot, environmentalism was nascent, and under society's pristine veneer was an undercurrent of new thinking and the unstoppable force of change.

I was watching The Simpsons epsiode, " A Streetcar named Marge" and thought, " Hey! I've never seen 'Streetcar' before. I should probably watch that." It was incredible. I couldn't tell if Viven Leigh was acting or not. And Marlon Brando? Mmm. So fine. I'll be watching it again to get a better understanding of the movie. I cannot understand Southern accent very well. I started watching the "Official Young Vic's A Streetcar Named Desire" with Gillian Anderson and Vanessa Kirby. I love Anderson's Southern accent.
Anyway... STELLAHHHHHH!!!
