I mean, I literally know what happened to him. I just read his wiki page and IMDB. But what I'm asking is, "What happened to his career?"
The man broke out internationally with some of the most striking music videos of the 90s and 2000s:
Each one of these videos is worth watching in its entirety. Gondry is a visual genius.
Then the man broke into feature length films, and it was great! Human Nature (2001) is entirely underrated and is a guaranteed laugh out loud movie watching experience. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is a modern masterpiece. If you haven't seen this film, plan to watch it ASAP.
But then The Science of Sleep (2006) came out to a middling reception, as did Be Kind, Rewind (2008). Both were fun and quirky, but they didn't betray Gondry's genius. The Green Hornet (2011) was univerally panned, even by its stars, and most of the rest of his films seem to be French productions.
What caused this phenom to retreat into regional filmmaking? When I was at college it was like he was the second coming, but now I rarely hear his name uttered. Do any of you know some behind-the-scenes info? Did Gondry cross the wrong producer or lose someone powerful a lot of money?
