[–]CadavreContentReal 6 points7 points  (1 child)

You dropped this

e

[–]Abyssal_GrootComplex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coïncidentally that was usually the grade I got on both French and English. (Where I'm from the E meant you failed)

[–]_begovic_ 57 points58 points  (18 children)

Well you're not technically wrong I guess

[–]MathSciElecComplex 44 points45 points  (17 children)

Yes, they are. That would be “La règle de L’Hôpital”

[–]JonaztlComplex 12 points13 points  (11 children)

I know it’s a bit much to ask, but could you explain what the various diacritics do in french? Like the circumflex, acute, grave, etc.

[–]Derbloingles 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Well, the circumflex evolved as a shorthand for writing an ‘s’, which can be seen in words like hôpital (hospital) and fête (fest). The diaeresis is used to separate syllables, like in naïve. Notice that the a and ï are two separate syllables. The cedilla under the c causes the ç to sound like an ‘s’, like in façade. And for acute and grave accents, é and è have different sounds, and I think à and ù are historical remnants.

So why is L'Hospital written as L'Hôpital today, but Renault isn't written as Renaut?

[–]yuseif 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't but Renault is a name, people don't usually change them.

[–]HCG_Dartz 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Oh no the English textbook is ruined, I have to read it in French now, "L'Hospital?" What the hell is that!

[–]Jameshiett 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah, that's one fine looking graph.

[–]BluePhoenix9280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why doesn’t mine look like thataaAAAHHH

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (8 children)

l'Hôpital

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (7 children)

That o in French reads as os, if I recall correctly. Nonetheless that is the meaning.

Edit: I'm wrong

[–]PotatoHunterzz 18 points19 points  (1 child)

no, it is pronounced as o. it replaces a "s" historically, same goes with forest -> forêt, or fenestre -> fenêtre, but there are no "s" sounds in any of those words.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already conceded that I'm wrong, but thanks for the explanation.

[–]Abyssal_GrootComplex 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Nope, it reads as "Hopital" not "Hospital".

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Check Wikipedia.

[–]Abyssal_GrootComplex 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Check any francophone. But for your information: https://speechling.com/how-to/how-to-say-hospital-in-french-2017

EDIT: However you are correct in the sense that when l'Hôpital lived Hôpital was spelled differently. But that was not your original point.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't check your source, I checked Wikipedia and you're right.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a native French speaker. We pronounce "hopital" without s

[–]yofrocuber 5 points6 points  (5 children)

L'Hospital's rule tells us that if we have an indeterminate form 0/0 or ∞/∞ all we need to do is differentiate the numerator and differentiate the denominator and then take the limit.

[–]yofrocuber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know

[–]vjx99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I use l'Hospital, I mark it with a little red cross. Got me some red questionmarks on an exam before...

[–]Sadsuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the ruler with a baguette pls

[–]CapableAlbatross4213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously don't understand why the guy was called "The hospital"
