Best ways to trace ancestors who were unofficially adopted and their names changed Best ways to trace ancestors who were unofficially adopted and their names changed

I’ve hit a bit of a brick wall when researching some of my Canadian family.

Bit of background - my 3x great grandparents had a daughter, Lillian ‘Lillie’ Maud LaRose (1884-1924) who was born in Ontario. She married a John ‘Johnny’ Thomas Russell (1875-1963) in 1900 and they went on to have five children between 1901-1911.

This is where I feel like I’m hitting a brick wall. Looking at birth records, I think Lillie fell pregnant by a different man in late 1912 and Johnny then ran off to New York. What I’m guessing happened is that Lillie had no way to care for her five children so put them up for adoption. She went on to have the baby, Mildred Nora, who she kept, and later remarried and had three more children.

What I can’t figure out is how to trace the five adopted/fostered children. One of them, Virgil Belle (1909-1934), looks to have been fostered and her name changed to Virgil Partridge. The eldest, Beatrice (b. 1901), I can only find a record of when she married in 1922. The remaining three, William (b. 1904), Christina (b. 1906) and Lily (b. 1911) seem to have vanished off the face of the earth.

Adoptions weren’t brought in Ontario until 1922, so I don’t think there’d be any records of them moving to other families. They were living in Lanark South in the 1911 census, but it looks like Virgil’s foster family lived in Logan Township, a good 300 miles away. Was this normal for children to be fostered out to families so far away?

Does anyone know the best way I could go about tracing the remaining three children? I’ve done a DNA test on ancestry but can’t see any obvious relatives of them. But then, if they had been adopted, there’s a possibility that their names had been changed and maybe their families don’t know about the LaRoses or Russells.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does anyone know what the birthplace highlighted in yellow for the bride and her parents is supposed to be? I've got nothin' - the handwriting is always atrocious on these forms! The bride (Annie Nadeau) was supposed to have been born in New Brunswick, Canada, so this must be a town name there? The province of New Brunswick does not have any official records of her, though (of course).

Also, does that blue highlighted occupation look like "Dress Maker" to anyone else?

Thank you in advance!
