BioShock was fine for me, even in subnautica i was ok swimming around the starting area because when i look down i see the ground. Then there's a point where the shelf drops off and you see jack shit and i start to get a panic attack lmao

Depends on how many horror games you've played. If you grew up in the 90s, playing all those old old horror games, continued through shit like silent hill, resident evil and stuff, Bioshock is a fun romp through a party gone wrong.

learned yesterday that you can turn off the "fog" in subnautica. all those leviathans started looking cute when you can see them from afar
It's definitely something to do with the combination of the murky visuals and 360 degree threats.
Have no problem blasting the hell out of tentacle horrors in the depths of space. But the moment that you can only see sets of glowing eyes and a hideous, malformed silhouette in the darkness, that turns straight chilling.
I had real problems even setting foot into the water in Morrowind, and there's like, nothing in it. It's just murky and rocky.
Man, diving into the water under the Lifepod during the night for the first time was... Not a good feeling.
You start off, it's all pretty and chill. Bubbly sounds, amazing synth-wave music, amazing visuals of shallow waters with caustics on the sand below, pretty glowing fish swimming past, bright sunlight reflecting off the fish schools in the distance.
But then you notice, wait a second.
The sun is coming down. Everything around you stops being so pretty and inviting.
And then during the first night, while you're hidden away in your Lifepod, in relative safety, you hear it. The roar.
You're not coming out until you can see sunlight through the top opening.
Dude I'm 31 and I felt fear, In the chasm underground mission, searching for Xiao. with Yalen and Arataki itto That mission was creepy and scary
It really was, even though you could teleport out again, do some dailies and get in again.
But whoever did that just never wanted to have any kind of immersion.

The mission was so gripping I couldn’t help but do the entire thing in one sitting. I was tired and exhausted of just seeing dirt walls for hours but man it was worth it.
Immediately, you'd hit your map key to pause the game and teleport out.
Turning off the music and exploring the desert ruin with only the ambient sound is a pretty creepy experience.
When stare into the abyss and the abyss stares back but nothing is more frightening than a reaper leviathan first encounter
I remember my first encounter. I had just returned from my first (and unprepared) exploration of the island with the alien structure. And the moment I got into my Sea moth, that monstrosity attacked and grabbed me.

I'm shocked you made it that far before encountering one.
The crash site begs to be explored first and it's got multiple reapers around it.
Ikr. It probably could be cause I played the game a bit oddly. Like, I didn't know how to build the Sea Moth for quite a long time. And I actually explored the crash site with just the glider. I didn't return until quite later
I could see that. If you bee-line for the west side and hug the shallow sands up into it and get lucky... You could completely miss the reapers especially if you're not in the seamoth.
There's like 2-3 of them hanging out under the back entrance, and 1 just off the west side of the ship of the path you need to take to get there. & If you happen to go around the front first (I did) there's one or two there too!
Once that water starts getting murky I turned the hell around lol

I tried playing subnautica as exposure therapy for my water phobia (for literally any body of water I can't even take baths lol), but I remember genuinely crying out of fear and quitting the game forever after the first time I saw a reaper leviathan. Even when I tried playing on creative mode (so I'd know they couldn't hurt me) I still couldn't do it. It's the scariest game I've ever played tbh; stuff like silent hill and outlast are terrifying, but nothing invokes such primordial fear in me as much as fish do.
"Well to try some exposure therapy for your phobia we decided to show you the thing you are afraid of and... you know... just CRAM IT FULL OF HORRIFYING MONSTERS!"

I drove off the map and encountered the big ghosts before I saw a reaper. One swam in front of me and took the full screen of the sea moth, I was scared

Plus music, the music always gets me...
But the Traveller has already fought worse - e.g. Beisht who's literally an underwater god hydra with 3 heads

Seriously I still get claustrophobic when I think about passing my Cyclops into the lost river through the blood kelp zone. That place is a fucking nightmare without the sonar module.

I have a phobia of dark water. I fell off a boat at night when I was little and after that yeah if there is water and its dark I'm staying away. I will be giving my login to a friend if it's bosses in dark water.

Funny thing about underwater exploration.
In ToF, it has underwater exploration and they added an entire sea for that update.
Now they have underwater caves and stuff but there is an area just below the sea surface where you can just barely make out the underwater city aside from the lights coming out of it.
That area has some real thalassophobia vibes since you can't see the floor except from places that gives off light. But those lights are just blur hues from a distance.
Now that I think about it, I don't think our chars have undersea flashlight so its kinda wierd that we get good visibility of our surrounding when we are on the sea floor.
Odd that in there, the surface world and the under are treated like 2 separate regions, once you go up to surface, you can still drown like anywhere else

Its because they don't want to remove the drowning mechanic. As for why we'll never know.
The pelican (basically the seaglide) has a flashlight, actually. But other than that, yeah. No clue why visibility no matter the depths and distance is so good. But I ain't complaining though cause exploration is already a massive pain in the ass albeit enjoyable with how massively expansive the Innars is in a completely omni-directional plane.

Not related to Genshin but this takes me back when I tried to built observatory base near each hostile Leviathan class monster but the reaper leviathan and ghost leviathan just disappeared after both observatory base was complete except Sea Dragon Leviathan

Is no one talking about how hard it would be to program water physics when diving down large bodies of water, let alone water physics on the surface for any open world game?
It's the reason why games like Dying Light 1 and 2 are extremely CPU-intensive. The programming for the water/fluid physics for those games are extremely well done but my god do they take up a lot of RAM.

Maybe they won't program water physics and just have it be the same as before with ponds and lakes, just now you can dive deeper to move through a non-collidable blue body with individual fish models swimming through?

We already basically explored what the surface part of the ocean is like in Inazuma, so Fontaine being where the underwater is, I hope we don't get stuck to reefs, let's go to the Marianas Trench of Teyvat and explore what kind of creatures are there that the Hydro Archon has to keep sealed.
