Hello there!

I'm currently planning this project, and I want to know if it's even possible.

By "Modded" I mean a whole modpack (RLCraft, ATM9, Dawncraft, etc). And by players, I mean concurrent players.

The server will be run on dedicated hardware from a hosting provider, It'll have a 9950x (but since that's not out yet, let's say it has a 7950x) along with 192GB ram and NVMe SSDs for storage. That costs about $300-$350 a month (you can get it for cheaper I think).

My current idea is technically not 200 players in a single server instance, but instead a network of servers just like how a lot of servers function (like hypixel for example). The "server" would actually be 6 servers (32gb ram for each), and each one would hold a max of 40-45 concurrent players, and it will have something like a 10,000x10,000 blocks area within borders (maybe less, maybe more, I'm not too sure).

It will have a bunch of performance mods along with optimized jvm arguments.

So I wonder;

  • Will that setup run okay with minimal lag?

  • Is there a better way I can set this up?

  • Can something like MCMT (or C2Me) help with this? or perhaps even increase the amount of concurrent players on each server?

  • Is there a possible way to actually run like 100 (or even 200) concurrent players on the same server instance with such modpacks that I mentioned above?

Keep in mind, there will be multiple machines (one for each modpack) with 6 (or more, depending on the modpack) servers running the same modpack within each machine. That means there will be ones running 1.12.2 modpacks and ones running newer versions so take that into account. Possibly different servers within different machines will have different max concurrent player limits depending on the version and modpack.

Edit: I just remembered I've seen some youtubers running 100 players on a single server with mods and stuff and that runs okay. so what's up with that? how are they doing that?
