Android Pay

I know a lot of people here take what Google Support says with a gain of salt but I'm just passing it on. After about a month and 20 replies back and forth in where they tried to convince me I was rooted (many times) and one even said "an unlocked bootloader is the same as having a rooted phone" I got an email from a supervisors this morning.

We got an update from our account specialist that if your bootloader is unlocked, the Android Pay will no longer support devices with unlocked bootloaders due to update security requirements.

Lame.

EDIT 2: Some people are asking "wasn't this already known?" No! There has been no official word from Google or any updated info on their Android Pay site.

EDIT: while yes I think this is lame I do to some degree understand. That being said i'm just so pissed that no warning was giving. It just stopped working. Google is so bad at communicating! It took a month! They kept wanted to trouble shoot my issue like it was an isolated incident yet i kept showing them threads and posts and evidence that this was global. Even as of yesterday they were telling me I was rooted and that is why it wasn't working!

So, my American Express card was cloned yesterday. I got an automated text asking whether I'd really spent AUD$75 on prepaid coffee, and I hadn't, so they cancelled the card.

I asked what that meant for Android Pay and nobody at Amex really knew.

Well, here's what happens. As soon as they make you a replacement, they update the card that's held in Android Pay. So you can go out and use it while you wait for the new plastic card to be shipped to you. This was confirmed to me this morning in an email from Amex.

(I'm unclear whether I could have still used Android Pay between my original card being cancelled and this new one being produced. Advice from Amex was "try it but you might need a backup".)

So - if you haven't added your card to Android Pay yet: here's another reason to do so... if your card is cloned then you'll still be able to use your replacement card even if you haven't got it yet.

This is relatively academic to me, since most places in Australia don't take Amex; or if they do they charge extra; and even if they take contactless Visa/Master they don't take contactless Amex (and therefore Android Pay Amex). But you never know, this might be useful for someone.

I got an update to Android Pay, version 1.12.141346482, this morning and noticed it was showing all my cards as "Not Accepted" except one, a ScotiaBank SCENE Visa card.

I tried adding the card and it showed me the Apple Pay terms (which isn't new, it had been doing that for a while now) but this time after accepting the conditions my card was successfully added. See .

I was still skeptical so I went and tried to pay with it and to my surprise, it worked!

EDIT: To get the app, install it from . Then you'll be able to update it from the Play Store.

Cards Reported working for now:

  • Infinite Visa

  • Momentum Visa

  • Visa Debit

Not working:

• BMO MasterCard

• Amazon Chase Visa

• BLC Visa

• CIBC Visa and Visa Debit

• Tangerine debit

• RBC Visa Debit, MasterCard

• TD Visa Debit, Visa

• And a bunch of other cards... for now. There's too many to keep track of!

EDIT 2: As of Dec. 12 6PM EST some users are reporting that adding a ScotiaBank Visa card gives an error message. They probably shut it down for now, waiting on an official release.

Wanted to get this out there - I have Android Pay working with root again. Doesn't require enabling/disabling root in the SuperSU app or anything like that. Here's how:

-Install systemless root (I'm using 2.67) -run "adb shell" -from the shell run "su" -from the shell run "chmod 751 /su/bin/"

That's it. Last night I confirmed I was able to make a purchase. This is on the Nexus 5x running stock ROM. So far one other has confirmed they could at least add a card on the Chroma ROM.

I've been following a thread on XDA about how no one has gotten Android Pay to work on devices that are rooted or running custom ROMs. A Google Employee just posted, confirming that it won't work. He did say that they're listening to our feedback though, and that they value the opinions of Android Developers.

Just added my Scotiabank CC & it was a very simple process, just enter the card number, security code, & billing address, then I verified the card by signing into the scotia app.
