Frogs shouldn’t eat fireflies. Fireflies are toxic to amphibians.

Something that concerns me about the reveal of frogs and fireflies is how the frogs eat the fireflies. For those who don’t know, fireflies are toxic for most amphibians and lizards. Half a firefly is enough to kill a bearded dragon- and I’ve gone through a lot of trouble in the past to try and spread awareness about this when the whole “frog swallows a firefly and glows” viral videos were going around- so I really hope this’ll get taken seriously as this sort of misinformation can unfortunately result in dead pets.

“Are Fireflies Poisonous To Frogs? Fireflies contain toxins that can be poisonous to lizards, amphibians, and potentially other animals, including birds. The toxins, called “lucibufagins,” are chemically related to cardiotoxins found in toads and plants. … Death can occur within an hour of ingestion and is due to the effect of the toxin on the heart.” (Neeness).

“ITHACA, N.Y. -- Just one firefly, with its poisonous lucibufagin chemicals, is enough to kill a lizard, a lesson that American zookeepers and pet owners are learning the hard way.” (ScienceDaily)

“The Cornell biologists received similar reports of firefly toxicosis in White's tree frogs, which also are native to Australia and were fed fireflies by their owner in Ohio; in a rock lizard that is native to Central Asia and was fed a single firefly on Long Island, N.Y.; and a chameleon, a native of Africa that was fed five or six fireflies in Illinois. Not all the animals showed the distinctive change in skin color and not all managed to regurgitate their last meal, but each evidently died of lucibufagin toxicosis. The remorseful owner of the tree frogs reported that the insects continued to flash, even after ingestion, and that their bioluminescent light could be seen through one frog's body wall.” (ScienceDaily)

ELI5: How do frogs, toads and other amphibians know how and where to find new bodies of water?

We’ve got a new pond which must be half a mile away from the nearest lake/river yet frogs and toads have populated it almost immediately. How do they know where to find these new habitats?
