First Amiga - 1988 Amiga 2000 with Commodore 1084S

I have a small retro PC collection. However, I always thought Amigas sounded super cool. I saw a deal on Facebook Marketplace and bought a mostly-working Amiga 2000 from its original owner in excellent cosmetic condition.

The owner used it to produce professional wedding videos for a few years in the 80s. He gave me a Supergen SX with it. It has a memory and hard drive combo card that were installed by the shop he bought it from. He said he never opened it, and that he had bought the big box in case he wanted to add a video toaster someday.

It starts up, and I can click on things, but it's extremely slow and doesn't always respond to clicks. It makes a repeating clunk sound that may be the hard drive, or may be one of the floppies. It had minor battery leakage that I cleaned up. It has a revision 4.4 motherboard.

I would like to know the best way to go about fixing it up. For my PCs, I usually add solid-state storage and networking, upgrade the CPU, and install a bunch of games. Does that still make sense here, and how? I think I could add a ZuluSCSI? And/or I could use a PiStorm? Or hunt for original accelerator cards or a video toaster? Do I need to upgrade the chip ram?

Thanks in advance for the advice. Trying to learn and do right by this cool machine.

YouTube channel CRG documents the process of building a "brand new" Amiga 2000, based around a new motherboard project designed by jasonsbeer and some donor chips from a badly battery damaged A500+. The new board uses the EATX form factor and includes a few tweaks to make life easier in 2022, including ATX PSU support and a HD15 video connector. It boasts excellent compatibility with all original and modern Amiga 2000 add-ons and accessories.

CRG's video shows the build in depth including some nice modern touches and a few potential pitfalls and builds into a really nice finished machine - a great example of this project in the real world!

Well what else would he be using in 1994?? Just ignore the continuity errors with the Tank Mouse!

  • Module file (MOD music, tracker music) is a family of music file formats originating from the MOD file format on Amiga systems used in the late 1980s. Those who produce these files (using the software called music trackers) and listen to them form the worldwide MOD scene, a part of the demoscene subculture. Most module files, including ones in compressed form, are supported by most popular media players such as VLC, Foobar2000, Exaile and many others. DISCUSS! members
