Alexander Lukashenko

Alexander Lukashenko could hardly stand on his feet in Moscow. Opposition journalists suspect illness in the Belarusian dictator

Lukashenko and his security forces continue provocations on the border between Belarus and Poland. From 4 to 7 April, Polish border guards recorded 1,047 cases of illegal entry into Poland on the border with Belarus.

Why doesn't Lukashenko personally benefit from Putin being president of Russia? The article describes why Lukashenko's personal ambitions are a threat to the sovereignty of Belarus.

The Wagner terrorist PMC is actively recruiting Belarusians. It's no secret that the Wagner PMC's instructor corps has been conducting classes with representatives of the security forces of the Lukashenko regime for almost a year now.

Militarization of children in Belarus. The authorities under the leadership of Lukashenko continue to actively involve schoolchildren in their "militia". Another step in this direction was handing firearms to children.

Why was Lukashenko elected in 1994?

According to the Wikipedia entry on the 1994 Belarusian presidential election, this has been the only free election in Belarusian history, and I am aware that Lukashenko has rigged every election since, killing off, jailing, and torturing his opponents.

Why was Lukashenko elected in the first place? What brought people to support his regime? And why did they allow him to consolidate power in the years that followed? Was the Belarusian government not structured in a way to prevent autocrats from taking power? Was the political structure too shaky?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Belarusian_presidential_election

What if the 1994 election had gone differently, with another candidate elected? In short, why did Belarus take a much different route than many other Eastern/Soviet bloc countries?
