Adventure movie

Was reading about Jumanji 4, and remembered my experience several years ago with a previous installment. This is coming from someone who is not a fan of Dwayne Johnson or Kevin Hart and was dragged to see the movie, but Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a lot more fun than I expected. Some parts did drag on and some jokes did not land, but overall I had an enjoyable experience.

Anybody else into adventure films? Like survival type or pirates or any other variety? I don't know what it is about them, but maybe it's the excitement of leaving the familiar to go on some kind of journey, looking for treasure or even just exploring the unknown world. I think film is great medium for that because it's one of the few ways you can "go" on an adventure and live the excitement without leaving your couch.

What's been the most exciting adventure film you've seen, including movies from other genres that had awesome adventure elements?

As a fan of the Uncharted games, this frustrated me over how basic and generic it felt. Such a shame too considering how and the set pieces in games could be. The action didn't wow me as much as say an Indiana Jones or Pirates of the Caribbean movie would and the story didn't intrigue me as much as the National Treasure movies did. Sure, you have the plane sequence which was inspired by Uncharted 3 and the pirate ship fight in the sky,

Even the casting is off. Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg feel off as Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan. Even when Wahlberg gets the Sully mustache at the end of the movie he still didn't fit. All I saw was Mark Wahlberg with a mustache. Holland I find charming enough but I feel like I'm watching the adventures of Peter Parker than the exploits of a young Nathan Drake.

I wouldn't say Uncharted is a terrible movie but it doesn't really capture the appeal of the games at all outside some marginally fun action sequences. Maybe I should have known the movie would have turned out this way judging by it's helmed by Ruben Fleischer, whose movies at best I find only okay.

Anybody else feel the same way?

Hot Take 1: The 2017 Mummy movie with Tom Cruise is a better Uncharted movie than this movie. Plus, I feel like Tom Cruise was a better representation of Nathan Drake than Tom Holland.

Hot Take 2: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a better action/adventure movie than Uncharted.

The Mask of Zorro is a perfect adventure film. It does not take itself too seriously and it has fantastic fight sequences. It is what adventure films strive to be, fun.

Antonio Banderas is perfect for the role and in my humble opinion does not get the recognition he deserves for his films in the 90s. This guys is a powerhouse of charisma. Add to this a stellar supporting cast of Anthony hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones and you really have an amazing recipe for success.

Great movie , great cast and I would love to see Antonio play the role again.

I’ve been really craving cheesy old fashioned fantasy, with beautiful maidens and handsome heros. I like action adventures with choreographed fight scenes and silly humour.

Something like The mummy franchise with Brendan frasier and Rachel Weiss, or The Princess bride.

I have also watched Legend, Krull, Merlin, the Witcher, pirates of the Caribbean, the last king kingdom and Shannara.

I'm just curious what the opinions on the very best made sci fi action adventure movie is. It's a cliché answer but to me it's definitely star wars the empire strikes back. Guardians of the galaxy 2014 is close though. What is yours?

I have been trying to expose my wife to some of the best action and adventure films she never watched and the Indiana Jones series is of course on that list. She isn’t too into action films in general, but now that we have watched some of the best, she has opened up a bit. We caught Temple of Doom right at the start one day, so she has seen that one before the others. Which I guess is okay because its set earlier!

Now I want to show her my favorite film, and probably greatest adventure film of all time, Raiders of the Lost Ark. I cannot think of any better adventure film.

What films even compete?

I don't know any other villain maybe besides Dracula that goes around basically sucking the life out of people. Which is why I love how the movie was directed cause you never get to see Imhotep actually do so but you hear it. Just hearing the noises of what he does to people is scary enough. Plus the idea of walking around a dark, underground, Egyptian Temple with him in the shadows is fucking scary. Arnold Vosloo was perfect for the role. I love the idea how he's brought back to life and through out the film he has to suck peoples fluids and organs to fully regenerates himself. So many films show people rising from the dead and they're exactly the same as they were before, I felt Imhotep actually had to work at fully coming back.

In the lead up to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny my girlfriend and I spent the last few weeks going through and watching all 4 of the Indiana Jones films. quality was a little bit of a roller coaster ride, but on the overall we really had a great time with the series. Not surprising for me because I've always loved the movies, but it was the first time watching them with her. As a result I'm interested in watching more adventure movies that are in a similar vein.

I know there's a ton of Indiana Jones ripoffs, but my understanding is that the majority of them are just not good. So I'm reaching out here to find out if there's any that are an enjoyable, fun time and actually worth giving a watch. I'm not worried about year of release, who made them, or even if they're period pieces or set in present day, etc., I'm more concerned about movies with a similar tone and style that also happen to be good. So Please, if you have any suggestions that fit into this category shoot them my way!

For reference, even though I recognize that it's among the more maligned installments in the franchise for reasons both valid and invalid in my opinion, Temple of Doom is my personal favorite of the four. So if you got something that's specifically reminiscent of that one rather than Raiders or Last Crusade I'd be even more interested.

We ended up going with The Adventures of Tintin last night, and I just want to say that I highly, highly recommend that film for anybody looking for those Indiana Jones vibes. Honestly one of the best films I've seen from Spielberg in the post 2000s era.

It’s the coldest day of the year here, down to -40f with wind chill! Been stuck in the house all day and really am looking for a good story to get lost in. Thanks for any Recs!

The only other one that comes close (and imo might even be better) is Spielberg’s Tintin, which is in desperate need of a sequel.

Every time The Mummy is on I can’t help but watch it through. It has such a perfect combination of humor, thrills, and charm. It’s a perfect homage to the pulpy serial style that inspired Indiana Jones etc.

I love this genre and hope we get a revival of sorts, not holding out much hope for a new Indiana Jones, and we all know the Uncharted film is likely never actually going to be made.
