Round 10: Guerrero banging Mayweather again and again at the corner. Mayweather is now just sharpshooting at will. It's not that Guerrero's trying, but he's clearly fading. Guerrero better do something to make this more of a fight because Mayweather's blowing threw these late rounds.

10-9 Mayweather, 96-94 Mayweather

Round 11: Guerrero trying to make this ugly, but his strength looks zapped. Right as he gets near the corner, he eats a right. Guerrero's getting wild with his punches, and as a result he eats shot after shot from Mayweather. I give Guerrero credit, though. He keeps coming forward.

10-9 Mayweather, 106-103 Mayweather

Round 12: Well Guerrero has to go for broke because I have Mayweather winning this. Mayweather just getting on his bike now. He's potshotting, and the crowd now boos. Hopefully, Mayweather gets in a big shot because if I know judges, this may not be a blowout for Mayweather. Okay, near the corner Mayweather gets in some hooks. He's now throwing some rights. That's more like it.

10-9 Mayweather, 116-112 Mayweather

Official Results Scores: 117-111, 117-111, 117-111. Mayweather UD Guerrero.

Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares

Round 1

Explosive opening. Both guys falling into the others traps and they’re landing hard shots. Santa Cruz was just a bit more active and steals the round.

Santa Cruz 10-9

Round 2

Abner Mares sharp in these exchanges and showing he is indeed a new fighter from their last meeting. He’s not throwing for the sake of keeping his hands moving, he’s actually laying traps and capitalizing on Santa Cruz’s mistakes. These exchanges are wild and it’s hard to tell who’s really getting the better of them.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 20-18

Round 3

Wild third round. Abner Mares looks to be countering Santa Cruz far better now. He’s landing big power shots and even though he’s getting just as good as he’s giving in exchanges, he looks like a completely new fighter.

Mares 10-9, 29-28 Santa Cruz

Round 4

Interesting round. The activity wasn’t as high as the previous three, but the storyline of the fight is beginning to change. Mares is backing Santa Cruz up now. These are very close rounds.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 39-37 Santa Cruz

Round 5

Another close round. Mares is slowing down, but he’s also dictating the pace that’s being fought and that’s allowing him to stay competitive. If Santa Cruz decides to ramp things up, we can see Mares quickly fall behind. Mares did enough to have an argument this round.

Mares 10-9, 48-47 Santa Cruz

Round 6

Santa Cruz landed some clean shots this round. He won just about every exchange and found a distance he's comfortable at to let right hands fly.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 58-56 Santa Cruz

Round 7

Santa Cruz settled into a beautiful rhythm and fought a perfect round. Mares is going to get hit by shots. There's no doubt about it, but he lands so many it's impossible to try to go toe to toe with him and out punch him.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 68-65 Santa Cruz

Round 8

Mares managed to out Santa Cruz Santa Cruz that round. It was still close, but Mares is staying in this fight. He's much improved since last time.

Mares 10-9, 77-75 Santa Cruz

Round 9

Close round, but the consistent work was done by Mares. Santa Cruz did land the nicest shot of the round, but Mares had a very nice sustained overall attack.

Mares 10-9, 86-85 Santa Cruz

Round 10

Santa Cruz overall lands the harder shots. His ability to pick off shots was actually eye catching and something we haven't seen much of all fight.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 96-94 Santa Cruz

Round 11

Mares unloads to close the round but it was too little too late. Santa Cruz has a definitive round and forced Mares to initiate several cinches in the round.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 106-103 Santa Cruz

Official Decision: Leo Santa Cruz by UD (115-113, 116-112, 117-111)

12 rounds for Mares's WBC featherweight title

Notes: Despite Mares being the reigning WBC featherweight champion, the Transnational Boxing Rating Board rates him as the third best featherweight in the world behind Mikey Garcia and Chris John. Jhonny Gonzlez rates at #5. Mares has been dropped once in his career by Vic Darchinyan. Mares has had numerous point deductions in his career for low blows. Gonzalez is no stranger to the canvas. In his last fight, Mares landed 50% of his power shots (explaining a 9th round TKO of Ponce de Leon.) Does Gonzalez have the defense (or chin) to withstand Mares and pull off an upset?

Notes: This is Santa Cruz's second fight at 122. Santa Cruz has never been down. The Transnational Boxing Rating Board rates Santa Cruz at #10. Terrazas is rated #2 behind Nonito Donaire and champion Guillermo Rigondeauz. With Donaire's upcoming move to 126, that leaves Terrazas the #1 rated super bantamweight behind Rigondeaux. Santa Cruz averaged 85 punches a round in his last fight landing on average 44 punches. (WHAT!?) We'll see if he can do that against a world class fighter in Terrazas.

Prefight rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

My prediction: Terrazas SD

Starts with a montage and hype video. The first line was Canelo talking about how much he loves shoes. Meanwhile, Mayweather visits a jeweler. Canelo is your rooster. Can someone who is a native Spanish speaker explain this one to us? Oscar is really taking this fight personally and sees Canelo as a younger him. He's going to beat Mayweather indirectly (because he didn't listen to Freddie Roach) using Canelo. Nice. Floyd Mayweather Sr. delivered a nice poem, or rap... J'leon Love spotting! Will Clemons (light heavyweight) spars 21 minutes straight with Lil Floyd. Still no clichés. Floyd watching Bey-Molina ending is tense. Floyd's reaction is like that of a great coach. Gotta love it. He even gives respect to Molina after that fight. In Mexico, Canelo is on the beach riding dune buggies and long haired beautiful horses. Also a little game of pool volleyball. He's sparring his brother. Hopefully his brother givers him better work than his English teacher, because his English is getting good. Unfortunately, his brother isn't doing such a good job mimicking Floyd's style. Interesting. Canelo has a daughter whom he doesn't like to be shown on camera. Floyd's 1.6 million dollar car looks like it was designed by NASA. Freddie Roach spotting! Good episode.

The Stub Hub Center looks pretty full. Ranallo, Bernstein, and Malignaggi will be calling the bouts. Paulie is keeping it real as always.

Terrazas vs Santa Cruz

Sam Watson standing behind Leo Santa Cruz. The crowd is behind Santa Cruz.

Round 1

Terrazas comes forward looking for a jab. Santa Cruz is responding to every punch. Misses a huge looping right. Crowd is chanting Santa Cruz. Terrazas lands a nice overhand right. Santa Cruz pays him back. Santa Cruz beginning to throw the body shots. They're fighting inside. Santa Cruz is landing his jab and following it with a straight right. Terrazas is now trying to find the distance to make Santa Cruz miss. It's definitely not inside as Santa Cruz sends a couple body shots over. Santa Cruz snaps his head back with a very hard jab. Terrazas doesn't look too comfortable with this pace. Terrazas has some success at a distance, but he comes back inside for Santa Cruz to land his body shots.

Santa Cruz 10-9

Round 2

Terrazas looking to set up the overhand right. Santa Cruz might have hurt him with a combo. Santa Cruz is turning up the activity. Terrazas needs to circle more and keep Santa Cruz from setting his feet to throw all these punches. We don't know if Santa Cruz can fight any way other than coming forward. Santa Cruz keeps getting the best of these skirmishes in the middle of the ring. Right eye already swelling on Terrazas. Santa Cruz is heavier handed, he's freezing Terrazas every time he lands his combos.

Santa Cruz 10-9, 20-18

Round 3

Terrazas eye is going to swell shut. It's already almost closed. He'll have to pull off a performance reminiscent of Morales-Maidana. Terrazas is trying to now fight off the back foot. Santa Cruz lands the first meaningful punch of the round. Another overhand right. Terrazas hurt by a left hook! He goes down! Left hook landed right near that swollen eye. Terrazas is up, now his eye is completely shut. He looks like Brock from Pokémon. Terrazas up after a 2nd trip down and he fights back. He takes a knee at the end of an exchange. He's not going to continue! This fight is over!

Official decision: 2:09 of Round 3 Santa Cruz KO3

Mares vs González

Round 1

Bell sounds. Gonzalez is trained by Beristain, trainer of Juan Manuel Marquez. Gonzalez is circling to his left, right into Mares's right. Marquez punching and moving, trying to land power punches. Mares having success landing his jab, Gonzalez taking it well. Gonzalez lands a stgraight right. Mares steps forward and is now picking the pace up with the pressure. Huge left hook lands for Gonzalez. Mares goes down!! He's hurt. He struggled getting up. Gonzalez is going to finish him. Mares is out. HE'S DOWN!!!! Mares is done!! 1st round knock out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god! I can't believe it!

Official decision: Jhonny Gonzalez KO1

Manny Pacquiao, Abner Mares, and boxing's big tent revival

Last Saturday, thousands of people saw the incredible.

Abner Mares, a top P4P fighter, got wiped out in 1 round by the old-but-still-lethal Jhonny Gonzalez. Gonzalez, who earlier in the year struggled with journeyman Eusebio Osejo, produced his career-defining performance with a resume that already saw him win three titles in two weight classes.

This fight echoes a more famous fight that occurred nearly a year earlier. Manny Pacquiao, the world's #1 P4P fighter, got KOed cold by the old-but-still-lethal Juan Manuel Marquez in 6 rounds. Marquez, who 2 years earlier struggled with journeyman Michael Katsidis, produced his career-defining performance.

What is happening here? Why are such lauded fighters getting cold cocked in dramatic fashion?

Boxing's Current Landscape

For me to answer this question, I must deal with a common complaint about boxing. Critics of boxing state emphatically that the best never fight the best, that the top P4P subsist on a diet of tomato cans, that other competing combat sports do a better job of producing competitive match-ups.

As an acknowledgment, let me say that a few years ago this was true. HBO, the network that trumpets itself as a haven for premium boxing, forced terrible match-ups on its audience. It was hard to justify a subscription to HBO when fans were force fed Andre Berto vs. Freddy Hernandez.

Things have changed, however. This year alone we've been treated to Timothy Bradley vs. Ruslan Provodnikov, Brandon Rios vs. Mike Alvarado II, Artur Szpilka vs. Mike Mollo I and II, Marcos Maidana vs. Josesito Lopez, etc.

In addition to this, new stars have emerged. Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev, and Lucas Matthysse have emerged as holy terrors in their weight divisions. Olympic gold medallists Zou Shiming, Ryota Murata, and Vasyl Lomachenko will all have made their debuts by years end. Deontay Wilder has now established himself as a legitimate prospect in a heavyweight division that also hosts Bryant Jennings, Tyson Fury, and Kubrat Pulev.

Viewed objectively, boxing is hot right now and it will only get hotter. Networks and advertisers have sat up and taken notice.

No longer banished to subscription cable, CBS, NBC, and FOX have all invested in boxing programming — sometimes showing it on free-to-air TV. Obscure upstarts like WealthTV and the Pursuit Channel are showing world title bouts. On the Internet, GFL.tv and Pandafeed are producing PPV events for up-and-coming prospects — content that creates good enough revenue that DirecTV feels the need to pay for gimmicky events in order to compete.

Advertisers are also sinking money into boxing. Audi, Subway, and Nike have all utilized boxing to sell their wares. It's not all Mayweather and Pacquiao getting endorsements either. Some of these advertisements feature obscure but very relevant fighters.

From a business standpoint, boxing is doing well for itself.

The Battle of Sentiment

So why is it that the media doesn't talk about these obvious successes in the business of boxing?

Being one who works in media, I believe I have an answer for that — and it has a lot to do with how Word of Mouth (WOM) works. Generally speaking, it takes 1 negative comment to counterbalance 5 positive. What that means is that, for most people, a smaller volume of negative sentiment undoes a large volume positive.

Unfortunately, boxing is dealing with 30 years of constant negative sentiment. It started with the death of Duk Koo Kim, crystallized with Mike Tyson's rape convictions and ear biting incidents, then was punctuated by the Pacquiao-Mayweather rivalry (a.k.a., the Fight That Never Happened).

It will take 5 years of Bradley-Provodnikov fights happening every weekend to undue the heavy damage to boxing's sentiment. In the short term, it will be impossible to change the narrative of "Boxing is dying" because that's the mythos of boxing right now. Media and casual fans connect most with this story. This narrative is so powerful, there's a cottage industry of other businesses (like Zuffa) that exploit it.

To combat this sentiment, boxing needs a new narrative.

A Shift

If you've been paying attention to boxing these past few years, you may know who Jesus Soto Karass is.

Soto Karass is a journeyman with a current record of 28-8. 10 years ago, he would be the kind of fighter who'd be beaten by a hot prospect then never shown on premium cable ever again. Nowadays, despite his many defeats, Soto Karass is shown as a main event again and again.

Why is this? Because today's brand of boxing is no longer concerned about which fighter sports an undefeated record and instead cares about who delivers a good fight. Even through KO losses to Marcos Maidana and Gabriel Rosado, Soto Karass has proven again and again that he can deliver a good fight, even upsetting heavy favourites at times.

Soto Karass is by no means an anomaly. Matthew Macklin, Pablo Cesar Cano, and Alfredo Angulo all get their appearances in primetime TV slots because, though they may lose, they always deliver a fight. They're the guys who capture boxing at its best.

Now someone who doesn't watch boxing and is obsessed with numbers might be asking, "Why?! Why give these guys airtime when they lose?"

The answer is that, yes, they sometimes do lose — but often enough, they win. These fighters separate the wheat from the chaff. Fighters like this separate the Hypejobs from the Real Deals. If HBO and Showtime bothered to show the likes of Soto Karass in 2004, perhaps we have been spared Jeff Lacy gracing our TV screens.

The Nature of The "Best" Has Changed

In today's boxing climate, it is no longer enough for two undefeated fighters to be matched up and thence be considered the best fighting the best. Perhaps taking a cue from UFC, today's fans understand that it is okay if a fighter sports a loss or two. No, for the best to be considered the best they must deliver that quality which makes boxing real.

They must deliver a fight.

Casual fans were stunned at the KO of Pacquiao in part because they were used to him blowing out Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. Having never seen Pacquiao-Marquez I and II (in part because these fights happened before Pacquiao became a megastar), they were surprised with Pacquiao-Marquez III ended up being competitive.

The abiding narrative they believed was that the only two relevant boxers were Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. — everyone else was a stiff.

So imagine their further surprise when Marquez KOed Pacquiao, and he remained unconscious for nearly two minutes. How can someone who wasn't Mayweather accomplish this?

The truth is that for nearly 4 years, Bob Arum' Top Rank had avoided a third rematch between Pacquiao and Marquez. Content to go gangbusters with easy opponents on PPV, Arum saw no need for Pacquiao to face his stylistic kryptonite.

That all changed after Pacquiao fought Shane Mosley in a dull affair and fans began to question why they continued to shell out $60 a pop for a Pacquiao PPV. Sensing a need to stir things up, Arum booked Pacquiao-Marquez III in a fight no casual fan demanded — but which they deserved. After a competitive match, Pacquiao-Marquez IV was booked too. The rest is history.

You see, while Mayweather-Pacquiao may have been the theoretical best match-up, the Pacquiao-Marquez quadrilogy was the actual best match-up. This series of fights was amongst the best in boxing history — up there with the Robinson-Fullmer trilogy, the Ali-Foreman trilogy, and the Gatti-Ward trilogy.

Let me also go out on a limb and state that Pacquiao-Marquez capped perhaps the best group of rivalries in boxing history — a group of rivalries that the mainstream sports media continues to be oblivious about. I'm speaking about the rivalry between Barrera, Morales, Pacquiao, and Marquez.

(In fact, I'm writing a book about this rivalry in part because I'm flabbergasted that such a rivalry can remain obscure.)

In today's boxing landscape, being the "best" is no longer about winning titles and being undefeated. The "best" is about putting on a good fight.

Abner Mares Is Not An Anomaly

Which brings us to Abner Mares. Even though he's known to fight dirty, Mares is a fighter I respect immensely. In the last few years, Mares has fought Vic Darchinyan, Joseph Agbeko, Eric Morel, Vic Darchinyan, and Daniel Ponce De Leon. In each of these fights, he's not been content to stick and move. Mares has fought aggressively, putting pressure on all opponents.

Mares could have nursed his WBC belt by fighting the likes of Billy Dib and Rafael Marquez. Instead, he took a chance by fighting one of the hardest punchers in the featherweight division. His risk did not pan out. He was KOed in 1 round.

Despite this loss, most boxing fans wouldn't mind seeing Mares again. Why? Because he brings the fight. Mares is not the kind of guy who's about nurturing the "0". He wants to prove he's the best by fighting the best. There will be a Mares-Gonzalez II.

Nowadays nearly every fighter with name value must take on a live body. Even Adrien Broner, who's notorious for winning titles against easy opponents, is now fighting Marcos Maidana next. Floyd Mayweather, who everyone critiques (unfairly!) as caring mostly about his "0", is fighting #1 light middleweight Canelo Alvarez. Pacquaio, coming off a KO loss to Marquez, is fighting savage brawler Brandon Rios.

Today's boxing is about good fights. The question is: how long will it be till boxing's narrative changes?
