ABBA
I stumbled upon this Swedish band a while ago and kinda liked the song called "What Now" (), but somehow I realized ALL of their songs sound exactly like they're trying to be ABBA. No offense, I enjoy listening to them since I like ABBA too, but can't help feeling that they're trying to be ABBA too much. What are your thoughts?
Welcome! /r/MadeMeSmile is a place to share things that made you smile or brightened up your day. A generally uplifting subreddit.
It's mine because for the first time I enjoyed, loved and adored EVERY SINGLE song of some artist and it happened witht them (maybe except ISIITM). I didn't know it was possible, but when I discovered that it's the case with them it was obvious that they're my favorite artists.
THE WAIT IS OVER! I know we've all been waiting for this moment for years...

What do you think and what's yours?
Obviously, we’ve had a new album, which most of us thought would never happen, back in November 2021. They certainly don’t owe us anything more. Benny mentioned they’d recorded 12 songs for Voyage, and, as we know, Voyage had 10 songs on it. Which means there are two left in the can. I think Bobby’s Brother was alluding to it on one of his videos, but my hunch is they’ll release these last two songs to spearhead their 50th Eurovision anniversary releases, which will hopefully resemble a Beatles style anthology project but at this point we don’t know exactly what they’ll do. This I hope would also include old demos, outtakes and such. Then that’s it. Nothing more to say. Any thoughts?? Will they record more or are these two last songs - it?

Please read the guidelines below if you haven't participated in TTPT before:
-
Comment below your top ten tracks from the featured artist(s) in order. Please write the song names correctly, that would help me a lot while calculating the results. If you have comments for songs, leave them before or after your list.
-
Your list should be written if you want it to be included in the results.
-
Keep in mind that the program reads the comment how you write it, not how we see it. Don't put full stops or commas after the song names. "Don't put quote marks around them," don't style
them., please. I won't correct any formatting mistakes manually. -
The songs in your list gets 10 to 1 points based on its rank. The first song gets 10 points, and the last one gets 1. The results are revealed at the same time as the next TTPT is posted.

Wrote a post last year for my blog that questioned why ABBA has gotten so much hate over the years, here.
Tl;dr - ABBA's mastery of pop progressions, melody, and harmony turned once disposable pop music into an art form in it of itself. Their influence on modern day pop artists is understated, but without these four swedes, pop music as we know it may not exist today.
Edit: I also wrote an album review on the compilation, ABBA: Gold, which has sold 30+ million copies since its release in 1992. It's a great place to start, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone out there unfamiliar with the band.

WATMM is a place for music makers to discuss the music-making process (and a few closely related endeavors)
I'm going through the classics but with producing ears and I'm finding it so well produced and many things to learn from. I know some are pure Songwriting Tricks 101 but that's what matters in the end: blending everything in a good way.
Some thoughts:
There are times in songs where there are many instruments but each of them is so well balanced in the mix and their harmonies are non-intrusive with each other.
You can hear how instruments come and go (even a little piano just 2 secs) and make the songs very dynamic: although sections are well defined it's never boring or repetitive and are perfectly blended.
There's ALWAYS something catchy in the song (I know this is the key of everything yes) either an unexpected melody or a word that can get easily stuck in your mind (voulez-vous, money, chiquitita, mamma mia, super trouper). Instantly recognisable: you associate the word with its melody.
Melody responds to lyrics and viceversa. If lyrics get intense, melody changes from previous verse and makes those lyrics more relevant leading to somewhere else (chorus, bridge).
Background vocals are just spot on, not overwhelming.
What do you think? Do you have some other points I/we could learn from?
Edit: Thank you all for your analyses and discovering us a bit more of ABBA and sharing the love for such timeless band. Great cummunity here!

Hello again and welcome back to the…
Popheads Top Ten Pop Ten!
The Top Ten segment is hosted almost weekly in and , and now, here in Popheads! Last week we submitted Kendrick Lamar songs, so graciously posted for me by . The results will be up in a few.
If you want to get a feel for these, you can find all of them .
Cool! We’re acclimated now. Let’s move onto the actual post!
This week’s artist whose discography we’ll be ranking is the…
ABBA!
Ah! The Swedish pop quartet that half of all music derives from. The other half derives from Bach. Quote me.
Their discography consists of:
Ring Ring
Waterloo
ABBA
Arrival
The Album
Voulez-Vous
Super Trouper
The Visitors
To be clear, any songs by ABBA count! It can be a non-album single as well. Please refrain from features or remixes. For this specific TTPT, songs by the individual artists from the group from their solo careers are restricted.
With that, it’s time to explain this process. It’s going to be a similar the original Top Ten Pop Ten and those on indieheads and hiphopheads. Comment your ten favorites songs by ABBA in list format. IT MUST BE LIST FORMAT!!
example of the VERY IMPORTANT LIST FORMAT:
-
enter song here
-
enter second song
-
enter third song
and so on and so forth. Also, please try to spell the song titles correctly! If you are unsure, please look it up! You must put ten songs and cannot put the same song twice. PLEASE make sure you comment with numbers, periods, and separating them by line! The system will not recognize dashes, parentheses, or anything like that. Thanks! All of those are to ensure there are no mistakes <3
Feel free to AMA, as well as suggest artists for us to rank next by PMing me or commenting on this post. Submissions will close at the end of the day on June 9th, the Saturday (one day) before the next Top Ten Pop Ten will be posted.

ABBA’s best hits album, “ABBA Gold”, has reached a humongous milestone in the UK Albums Chart this week. It is the first album to ever spend 1,000 weeks in the UK Albums Chart Top 100. In its run, it has spent:
-
8 weeks at number one
-
61 weeks in the top 10
-
127 weeks in the top 20
-
365 weeks in the top 40
-
722 weeks in the top 75
-
1,000 weeks in the top 100
The album contains all of ABBA’s nine UK number one singles, which include “The Name of the Game”, “Fernando”, “Dancing Queen”, “The Winner Takes It All”, Mamma Mia” and their first number one hit “Waterloo”. It also contains other hit songs including “Voulez-Vous”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” and “Does Your Mother Know”.
Since its release in 1992, it has been certified a mammoth 19x Platinum (which is the equivalent of 5.7 million sales) - making it the second-biggest selling album in the UK. Only Queen’s “Greatest Hits” album has sold more (it has been certified 22x Platinum for 6.6 million sales).

I'm not a music person (I don't know the terms to describe what the music is doing to me), and I am NOT part of the target demographic, I heard the song completely by chance on someone's radio as I was passing by. I was transfixed by the song, when I first heard it. It is an extremely haunting melody with multiple emotions layered on top of each other. It's so quintessentially 70s, it's obvious from the melody and the accent of the singers. It's very nostalgic and sad yet being so happy. Like a story forms in my head when I listen to the story. It feels like it's about an older woman who's currently not happy in life or currently living a tragic existence who's looking back to her past in highschool when she was young, pretty and the life of the prom where she didn't have troubles and where she was carefree. I'm listening to this song on repeat and it's just so good. Am I crazy and looking too deep into this too much???
