Gintama and the Art Of Parody Gintama and the Art Of Parody

Hi all, I have created a video essay on why Gintama Parody episodes work so well. Link is in the comments below. I discuss the unique features like fourth-wall breaking, satire, mimicking other popular series like Naruto and DBZ, and how Sorachi takes it beyond just comedy, with social commentary and character building. Do see for yourself and let me know what you think. P.S. People who have watched the video have said they LOVED the intro, so you won't be disappointed (hehe)

Just finished watching Now and Then, Here and There, my review Just finished watching Now and Then, Here and There, my review

Overall I liked it. If I had to give it a score, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5.

Pros:

---The show takes time to breathe and just let the scenes linger and have the mood be set which is quite nice and fairly rare in anime.

---The idea itself is interesting

Neutral:

---The show is like a 50/50 split between being a mood-piece and plot driven, NOT character driven which is a nice change of pace...but does bring with it some flaws.

Cons:

---The biggest problem I have with the series is that it just plain and simple, doesn't do enough. There is SO MUCH potential here for a bigger story, the potential is in the shows hands and all it just has to do is take hold and grasp that potential...and it just doesn't do it...worldbuilding is ignored. Deep characters are not present. Character growth is vague. Details are just never explained etc.

I did get the impression that the anime wanted to tell a specific story with specific beats and that some details were simply deemed unnecessary / unimportant because they "didn't matter" to the overall story, my gripe is that I personally think those details could of have made the anime feel deeper, even if it was just a few throwaway lines.

I did like it overall and I think it could of have been better if it had more episodes or sacrificed some the mood building for world building just to make it feel more "alive" or "real" so to speak.

Examples:

---How did Hamdo come into power in the first place?

---What exactly is his relationship with Abelia and why is she so loyal to him despite him treating her like shit?

---What exactly is LalaRu? Alien? Magic? What is her pendant?

---They have time travel, why not make more use of that?

---Are we in the past? The future? A different world?

---Who were the other people fighting against Hamdo in that giant tank that he killed with a laser nuke?

etc.

---Characters are dead simple. I GET why they are simple since they are just like kids and are not particularly deep or interesting characters...but entertaining from an audience perspective it does not make. It would be nice if we learned some of Shu's inner thoughts or have LaLaRu show an expression or have any line other then complete silence for like 95% of the run time etc.

Side Note: How exactly did Lalu-Ru get to the past(?) in the first place? Did she sneak away and use the Bound System? If so, you think she would be doing more running and not sitting and watching the sunset.

Hello everyone! My name's Nova. I used to go by the name TerminaVelocity here, and I'm a former mod of this sub.

It makes me sad to see this sub so underutilized, because back when it was at its prime, we had some great times and memories. I understand because everyone had their own stuff going on at the time, but I'd love to bring that back.

For those who don't know, at its prime we had maybe 3-5 group watches going at a time. Anyone could host one, and we'd have discussions for each show a few times a week, depending on whatever schedule worked for everyone involved. The pace varied but it was always planned in advance.

This was a great way to find anime you may have never given a chance before, watch shows on your backlog, and meet like minded people who share a common interest watching anime.

Would anyone be interested in doing this? I don't have a specific series in mind to start with or anything, I'm currently watching a lot this season, so I don't have a ton of time, and I'm currently at work so I can't get it sorted out until I get home later. But I wanted to gauge interest and see who's down! ^^

Hope you're all well, and having a nice day!

Alright. I know that this subreddit is extremely dead. At this point, I don't even expect anyone to read this, but I guess it's worth a shot.

Hi! I've gotten into anime roughly 5 years ago and I've seen around 130 shows at this point. My ex basically convinced me to start watching it and we would often watch anime together (We called every day so we've seen quite a few animes together). A year after our break up, I finally found someone new who I could watch anime with on almost a daily basis. Now after having watched roughly 25 animes with them as well, they started getting less and less active to the point where we often don't call for a couple of weeks. I'm really desperate to find someone new who I can watch anime and joke around with.

For information, I'm a 19 year old male from Belgium who, although being a college student, always tries to find some time for entertainment. I usually stick to 12-24 episode shows and watch around 2 episodes a day (I know it's not much) unless I'm really invested in the story. Some of my favorite shows are Summertime Render, Charlotte, Akame Ga Kill, Saiki K, and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou.

If you would like to watch anime together, please add me on Discord vivizwag#3302 where one of us can share their screen!

Just released Watchtower Local, an app to watch video files you and your friend have locally, online together Just released Watchtower Local, an app to watch video files you and your friend have locally, online together
Announcements

You may already heard about Watchtower Online (no, not the bs magazine) , when we released it into the beta 3 months ago. Its a Web-App to watch videos from various online platforms together. It's pretty cool and all, but another spicy side project (especially for you guys) we've been working on in parallel, got on the market just now.

My best friend and i released the complementary Windows-App Watchtower Local on the Microsoft Store. With it you can watch Anime and other video files (like .mp4 or .mkv) you and your friends both have on your computer together. Its an alternative to Syncplay, if you heard of it. I think the app will be extremely useful for you to watch your very legally obtained anime together.

It was quite a journey getting here. We have been working more than a year on it. And i think it is the most beautiful Windows-App you will have ever seen.

This is how the app looked as a p2p-prototype: https://imgur.com/a/Es4Tcwd

And this is the app as of today: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9PDRBH3QDWW3

Anyways, if you are interested i would suggest you download it now, and tell your friends because it is free until February 1st!

For more info about Watchtower check out our website here.

Special - The Headless Horsemen!! Curse of Death

This is it watchers, the final episode, for real now.

Anime info

Ah, Ghost Stories, this has got to be one of the most unique anime out there. This is what happens when you've got an anime so incredibly bad that the producers take a good look at the situation, down some martinis, then hand a rough outline of the script to some voice actors and tell them "Turn this mess into something English speakers will find worth watching by whatever means necessary". And oh boy, did they. Suffice to say it's not called the one official abridged dub lightly, my friends.
