How to use Generative Fill in Adobe Photoshop to bring your daydreams to life.

TL;DR: We’ve all been here before – sitting on the couch, or maybe sprawled across your bed, iced beverage in hand, scrolling Reddit while you daydream about how cool it’d be if you could make some edits to your reality.

The generative AI features in Photoshop make it easy – and you won’t need an art degree to do it. Just follow these tips, make up a magic word, say the magic word, and you’ll be raking in gold for all the right reasons.

Tip #1 Add an object with Generative Fill — Design My Room

The newest way to r/designmyroom IRL! Go to the top of r/interiordecorating with style and ease with these tools (don’t worry, you won’t need any actual power tools).

STEP 1: Select it.

Use any selection tool to select an object or area in your image. Click the Generative Fill button in the Contextual Task Bar that appears.

STEP 2: SpeakType it into existence.

Add a prompt describing the furniture, light fixture, wallpaper, etc. you want to add to your room in the prompt box. The world is your oyster! You can even leave it blank and let Photoshop fill in the area you selected based on the surroundings — if you’re feeling spicy.

STEP 3: Lock it in.

Check out the variations Generative Fill created based on your prompt. A new Generative Layer will appear in the Layers panel so you can edit or regenerate to your heart's content without messing with the original pic.

And just like that, you’ve got a swanky new room! Now you just have to fill it with friends.

Tip #2 Add an object with Generative Fill — Add a Photobomber

Add an unexpected guest with Generative Fill in Photoshop.

STEP 1: Pick a location.

Just like last time, select something or somewhere with a selection tool (our favorite is the lasso tool, if you’re wondering – yeehaw). Then hit the Generative Fill button in the Contextual Task Bar that pops up.

STEP 2: Describe the suspect.

In the prompt box, add a description of the person, creature, or thing you’d like to add to your photo (heads up – you’ll have to do this for each photobomber you’re adding). Anything about their height, species, number of toes, etc. will do. Be mindful about who you bring in, though – you may end up summoning your first OC from the depths of your 7th grade science notebook.

STEP 3: Get schwifty.

Go through the variations in the Properties panel and make sure your photobomber is who you say they are! Don’t forget, if you want to change what they’re wearing or specific features, you can always add more generative layers on top.

But what if you need more space for more photobombers?

Tip #3 - Push the Boundaries with Generative Expand - Miniatures

You're the master of your own r/miniatures. Now you can use Generative Fill in Adobe Photoshop to become the master of an even bigger tiny world.

STEP 1: Get started with the Crop tool.

Starting from a completely new picture or one you’ve started using the previous steps, select the Crop tool from the toolbar. Once it’s selected, click and drag the handles on the crop border to expand your canvas. Don’t click “Generate” just yet. We’ll get there in a sec.

Note: You can also use ye ol’ Contextual Task Bar to select common crop sizes from the Ratio dropdown menu.

STEP 2: Generate a new background.

*One second later*

Ok, now click “Generate” in the Contextual Task Bar and watch Photoshop fill the space with content, fresh from the proverbial AI paintbrush.

[Pause for dramatic effect] Take a breath and revel in how seamlessly the new content blends with your original image. Feel free to click through the variations in the Contextual Task Bar or Properties panel if you’re not absolutely gobsmacked by the first generation.

ALT STEP: Use prompts for a custom result.

If you have an idea of what you want to see in the expanded image, add a simple description into the prompt box in the Contextual Task Bar. Try something like “a brigantine-type ship designed and built by a world-renowned cyborg shipwright themed with a thousand suns.”

In Closing:

All it takes is a little imagination and Generative Fill and Generative Expand in Photoshop to bring your purest intrusive thoughts to life. Anyone can do it. And you can try Photoshop for free here.

Now hop to it, young dreamer! Your daydreams aren’t gonna build themselves.
