https://ictnews.org/archive/swinomish-tribe-files-lawsuit-to-stop-bakken-crude-oil-trains

"Swinomish tribal leaders, wary of the potential for tragedy and tired of negotiations that have gone nowhere, are suing Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway to stop the company from transporting extra-flammable Bakken crude oil across reservation lands."

Looks like trains can have sick days even if workers don’t get ‘em….

Jfc, no wonder the PNW has been pushing for more ecological safeguards! I don't want another Norfolk Southern happening up here! It's only a matter of time

The hilarious thing is that on Nextdoor down here, there were people trying to pin this on "eco-terrorists".

I like the way it looks like the traino is taking a little nap.

*of course, ecological disaster is terrible. Yet, the train does look cute napping in the grass like a tire doggo.

What’s going on with all these train derailments lately?

There are around 3 train derailments per day in the US. In the 70s there were at least 4x as many, derailments have actually decreased in frequency by a large amount over the last few decades.

Most derailments happen in switchyards where impacts are minor, but there are multiple every week that happen on through tracks. The news largely ignored them until the Norfolk Southern derailment opened people's eyes up to how consequential one derailment can be.

Train derailments are super common. They usually have little impact, so they don’t make the news.

The toxic spill is Ohio was newsworthy nationwide because of the nasty stuff that spilled.

The derailment in Anacortes is such a small event, it probably won’t make the Seattle evening news.

They aren't new, it's just that talking about them has become a politically convenient way for Republicans (who exacerbated the problem) to swipe at the Biden administration (who are part of the solution).

Trains derailing and poisoning communities is super common. More than one train derails every day in the US.

Is there anything we can do locally to ensure we don't become another East Palestine Ohio?
