I am obviously a bit upset that he decided to not come to DC but also it's pretty refreshing seeing guys try and finish what they start. Dan Campbell has built something special in Detroit

[–] Commanders Lionsdarkpaladin 242 points243 points  (11 children)

Honestly if Sunday was a blowout or if the Lions went on to win the SB I think Johnson would have come to DC. I'm sure if I'm Johnson the idea of making another run at it with something he helped build is as attractive a prospect as starting from scratch with a new team as HC.

[–]ChocoChowdown 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Here's hoping he doesn't regret it the same way Leftwich regrets turning down the Jags gig after he was the young upcoming OC with a great couple of seasons under his belt

cause hes out of the league now

[–] VikingsMcRawffles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Leftwich will likely be back with some team in the near future, as with most former OCs. But yeah Johnson could end up regretting this, if the offense falls off (even if it's little fault of his own) his prospects will slim down

[–]LionsBerry_impulse 292 points293 points  (56 children)

Here’s hoping Brad Holmes goes all in this year. Lock up the extensions with Goff, St Brown, Sewell, etc then make sure to draft the best DB or Edge they can, even if they gotta use that draft capitol to trade up.

[–]LionsHmm_would_bang 156 points157 points  (42 children)

Trading up makes a lot of sense if they see someone worth it. We have a lot less holes to fill this draft and could really use another star on the defense.

[–]LionsBerry_impulse 68 points69 points  (21 children)

I know there are some mocks that have Kool Aid Mckinistry falling to us. I just think we have youth and talent on both sides of the ball, use some picks and move up if you see a stud at those prime positions.

[–] PackersNuclearDebris 40 points41 points  (18 children)

There's zero way we don't take him if he falls to 25, so I don't think he'd fall to 29.

However, if you want to do another trade up with us to give us another Wicks, please do.

[–]LionsArmiinTamzarian 60 points61 points  (1 child)

If you take the guy named Kool Aid after all the talk over the past two years about the Lions Kool Aid it will cement the Packers as no good cabbage for a heart Meanie heads

[–]LionsJaredGoffFelatio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way the Packers draft him. I just feel like Kool Aid was destined to be a Lion... It's our thing

[–] VikingsDookuGato 26 points27 points  (2 children)

We aren’t even done with the season and we’re already in the “no way they pass on x player” stage of the draft.

Wild lol. Because the packers have never gone against consensus in the first round, right?

[–] PackersNuclearDebris 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Because the packers have never gone against consensus in the first round, right?

True, we'll trade up for MHJ now because you said that.

[–] VikingsDookuGato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take it back you can have Kool-Aid!

[–]Lionskcrab91 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I don’t know man, the GB front office is well known for taking an offensive weapon in the 1st round to help their QB out…

[–]LionsTheNainRouge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they do it they will have a guy with a Rodgers jersey on explaining how important this is to support your QB.

[–]Lionsbloodlion87 18 points19 points  (8 children)

Because that trade up for Brian Branch just turned out so awful for us.

{Insert Tom Grossi Breakdown}

[–] PackersNuclearDebris 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Definitely didn't imply it turned out awful for you guys. He was probably your best DB, and he has a rookie! He's gonna be great.

It just also turned out exceptionally well for us.

We turned that second round pick into Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Karl Brooks.

I'd be more than happy to let you guys get another stud DB if we get 3 studs out of it again.

[–]LionsSpiritBamba 6 points7 points  (5 children)

What you did with the second round pick had nothing to do with us tho, so it’s not like we got you those 3 guys.

[–] LionsDanCampbell89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's zero way

Have to admit I missed the absolute certainty fans project their team's strategies with during draft season

[–]LionsSpiritual_Boss6114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Kid from Toledo is better.

Kool-Aid takes a lot of risks as a db.

[–] 49ersLARXXX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kool aid is overrated as fuck, he’s gambles too much and he’s gonna get torched in the nfl

[–] LionsPM_ME_YOUR_CATS_PAWS 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Agreed. If we’re wanting to take a DB in round 1 for example, by the time it gets to us you’re already at like DB6 based on some mocks I’ve seen

Once we get into the territory I feel like incremental difference between DBs is low since it’s a hard to transition spot as it is.

Edge I feel like is the same case

[–]Lionsacoasterlovered 10 points11 points  (7 children)

My thing with drafting a corner is that next year it’s win now, most corners don’t even blossom till year 2-3 for every sauce you have 3 more that took longer to develop

[–]LionsHobbit-dog91 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

In what way is next year win now?

[–] VikingsOFmerk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Before you have to really start paying guys and coaches gets poached.

[–]LionsJustAnotherCODNoob 19 points20 points  (2 children)

In the way that it is the last year before our extensions start kicking in and we’re gonna be paying Goff about $20m more and the extensions for St. Brown and Sewell are gonna start as well. It is the year where we will have the most cap space available to go get some guys because we have so many players still on rookie contracts

[–]PreviousImpression28 6 points7 points  (1 child)

To add onto this, Ben Johnson is for sure going to be gone too

[–] Vikings LionsBig-Gur5065 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a lions fan you probably don't know this but when you're good all of a sudden all your coaching talent gets poached and you have to start to give guys huge contracts

[–]Lionsbubble_bass_123 2 points3 points  (8 children)

We have a lot less holes to fill this draft

We need like eight starters on defense.

[–]LionsHmm_would_bang 14 points15 points  (7 children)

That’s not really true unless you expect every player to be top 10 in their position.

I would say we need a CB1 and a DE2 or an elite DT next to Alim. Someone to generate actual pressure outside of Hutch.

Our safeties are in a good spot. Our linebackers are in a good spot. Realistically two good players could make a world of difference.

[–]Lionsmarkus135 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think adding great top tier players also increases the level across the board - our questionable starters become excellent depth options

[–]Lionsfrogpittv 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Grab Stephon Gilmore and Josh Allen in FA and then draft either the best DT or CB available.

[–] Lions Patriotssxuthsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like Jaylon Johnson

[–]Lionsbubble_bass_123 0 points1 point  (2 children)

We need two corners, at least one linebacker, at least one safety, and at least two defensive linemen. So 8 was an exaggeration, but not much of one.

Some of the players y'all think are decent are actually pretty bad.

[–]LionsHmm_would_bang 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What we need and what we could improve our two different discussions.

Can Sutton is done when he’s need be asked to guard players like Ceedee Lamb, Justin Jefferson, Puka Nakua, Mike Evans, etc. He’d start at CB2 for most teams. I also don’t know what we do with Moseley or how he would have helped if he was healthy.

Anzalone, Barnes, and Campbell all had great years and should be starting at LB for us next year.

We have a lot of depth at safety. I would put this position below WR as a need. Probably the only thing we need less is RB or QB.

[–] TexansCarsxn26 17 points18 points  (2 children)

All the top tier DBs will probably be gone by 28 but there will definitely be a great DE available then. Turner and Latu are likely gone, but I could see one of Trice/Robinson/Verse being available still

[–] 49erstrebek321 3 points4 points  (1 child)

There’s also a ton of talent to be had on FA if they really want to splurge and go all in

[–]LionslUNITl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk, I’d rather get a vet at CB unless we trade way up. If we bring in a rookie and roll with Sutton as CB1 we’re going to have big problems next year.

Plus if we’re being honest, it’s the NFC North, nobody ever leaves. You already know either Kendall Fuller or Jaylon Johnson is signing here.

[–]TripleThreatTua 8 points9 points  (2 children)

They’re using that draft capital to trade for a big defensive piece I think. Marshon Lattimore makes sense

[–]LionsIvanGTheGreat 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah we’re about to sell the farm for the next year or two

[–]LionslUNITl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly I’m hoping DT or Guard in the draft. I’d rather bring in a vet to take the load off Sutton rather than throw him back into the CB1 role while a rookie finds his game. Lots of edge rushers hitting the market this year too, plus Houston is back.

[–] 49ersJ12345_ 14 points15 points  (2 children)

I hope Goff realizes a lot of his success is from having the best o line in the league. I would pull a Brady if he cares about a SB and legacy. But I wouldn’t fault him too for trying to maximize his bank account

[–]LionsBerry_impulse 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I could absolutely see a “home town discount” kind of deal, unfortunately I think we just are in the age where that’s still going to look like 50mil lol. Will be interesting to see how Hendon Hooker looks after redshirting this year to work with teddy bridgewater and rehab his leg. If Goff is TOO pricy or falls off at all this year, it could make the cap decisions a little easier.

[–] 49ersJ12345_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. Love the hendon hooker pick. He still has some time to rehab and get to know the system and the league. Great hedge by Detroit

Has anyone ever turned down head coaching jobs two years in a row? I’m sure guys have turned down jobs before because they didn’t like the situation there (that’s what it seems like happened with BJ last year with the panthers) but 2 times seems crazy

Either way I’m stoked to have him for another year

[–] Titansfirefighteremt19 64 points65 points  (3 children)

Ben Johnson announced as the new HC of the Chiefs after Andy Reid retires with a Super Bowl win over the 49ers.

Ben Johnson to St Brown: "Its just business, nothing personal."

[–] Seahawksthegiantkiller 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a superstitious man, so if something we're to happen-- if Brock Purdy were to hang himself in jail, or be struck by a bolt of lightning-- that I will not forgive. And I will blame some of the men in this room.

[–] Packers BillsCrasino_Hunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, he’d have to be a goddamn moron to stay in Detroit if this situation presents itself lol. I cannot accept any dissenting opinions on the matter.

[–] PackersArcadianBlueRogue 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Wait, Ben, why are you looking at that metal pipe and Googling where the 49ers defensive players live? Ben? BEN!!

Lions to the Superbowl isn't just a kool-aid drinking Detroit fan fantasy anymore.

[–] BrownsPasserbycasual 11 points12 points  (0 children)

How much of Ben staying is because of Dan and the team’s overall culture? To say the players and coaches have been bought into turning the Lions around this year would be an understatement. Im sure everyone feels like this is unfinished business. Bringing a title to the Lions would be a helluva ride too.

[–] VikingsWildInSix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Golden Corral Manager: Kelvin Benjamin told me we have unfinished business

[–] RavensThyOughtTo 66 points67 points  (15 children)

He didn't want to coach the Commanders.

[–] Seahawksserpentear 53 points54 points  (8 children)

This whole thing has been so weird.

It’s almost as if that mega price tag was him just saying “no one is gonna pay me this and I’m okay with it”

[–] Lions ChargersJDraks 65 points66 points  (6 children)

I figured it was a "if you want me, then make me leave" thing and it seems that was probably right

[–]LionslUNITl 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Yeah exactly, it’s not like he’s going to have a hard time finding a job. And the more the machine in Detroit keeps rolling the higher price he will get when he eventually leaves for the right gig.

[–] Cowboys ColtsLeoFireGod 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well… it’s possible kellen moore had offers for HC initially but stayed thinking he would get a better opportunity.

Same with Byron leftwhich. Nothing is a guarantee and there’s only 32 spots.

[–]LionslUNITl 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Leftwhich had success as an OC with Arians and Brady lol. Yeah idk how many people were thinking he was the key to that Super Bowl win.

Moore has had a pretty crazy career path. He hasn’t really built an offensive system that shows sustained success. The cowboys were rolling in the regular season before he got there and after he left. Johnson’s system has his name all over it, he’s turned Goff’s career around, created versatile weapons in at least 3 skill position players, and just seems to be building momentum the longer his players develop in the system. To me that makes him a way stronger candidate than Moore was even at his peak.

[–] Cowboys ColtsLeoFireGod 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Well I mean to play devils advocate Dan Campbell took over and was absolutely cooking. So you could argue Dan is a driving force

[–]LionslUNITl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Campbell doesn’t call the plays. He did for a little bit after they fired Lynn but it honestly didn’t go that well. He’s involved but Johnson is the one installing the offense.

Also it’s not like it’s all been good under Campbell. We were horrible his first year and went 1-6 in year 2. Campbell is 29-33-1 as a head coach. Johnson is 23-14 as OC.

In case that’s not clear, Campbell win% without Johnson as OC is 23%, and with Johnson is 62%.

[–]LionslUNITl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s also good to keep in mind that people tell things to journalists so that the public narrative makes them look good. We don’t really know what happened in between Johnson taking the first phone call and declining the second interview. We only know what someone on the Washington side said to a journalist.

[–]LionsHuellMissMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Detroit is the place to learn that if you take the wrong job you can torpedo your head coaching chances for life. Note that since 1957 no Lions HC has subsequently gained another HC position.

[–]QuietRainyDay 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I wonder why tho. Is the new ownership group really not good? I thought they had gotten a good GM?

Theyll get a QB at 2 and Im not sure what more he wants

If he just assumes he will get his pick of any job with a top QB next year, he is playing a dangerous fucking game. There have been plenty of hotshot coordinators that missed their chance before. All it takes is a slightly down year for him and Zac Robinson to have a great year and suddenly he is no longer belle of the ball when Philly opens up (if it opens up...)

[–] RavensThyOughtTo -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

[–] Lions Billsnewtya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–] Buccaneers Jetswizgset27 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Lions really need to revisit their, "4th down is the new 3rd down" strategy and adjust it a bit....

[–] Lions Lionswhich_ones_will 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Why in the world would they do that? They had a great season and part of the reason for that was that they had one of the league's best offenses and were aggressive on offense. They made like a half dozen terrible plays that cost them in the second half against the 49ers, but none of them had to do with being too aggressive on 3rd/4th down calls.

[–] Buccaneers Jetswizgset27 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Lions were up a lot at one point. I just think it would have been smarter to add to the lead rather than staying aggressive. Kind of like what DC did when they kicked that FG before the half instead of going for it.

Brady said he watched the game and also thought they should have kick for points and worked on protecting the lead rather than scoring.

[–] PackersWhaty0urname 0 points1 point  (2 children)

When I was in 7th and 8th grade my baseball team 2 straight championships. Us 9th graders could either play one more year at that level or most up to play in a harder league. Most kids moved up but a few of us stayed for a chance at a 3-peat. We got bounced in the first round of the playoffs, getting swept 2-0, in a 3 game series.
