I believe I saw one of these in Alaska- I thought I was seeing things as it dipped in and out of a stream.

I saw my lifer at Yosemite too, nesting under stone bridge the name of which I've forgotten. What a hoot! Rockin' Robin!

Wow was not aquatic songbirds even existed, are there more well known species outside of north america?

[–]Shmeeegz 19 points20 points  (1 child)

There are more dipper species in Europe, Asia, and South America!

Interestingly, the White-capped Dipper of South America is not fully aquatic. It wades around in the shallows, but never fully submerges or swims.

I'm sure there are, but to be onest I wasn't even aware of them myself untill I saw this one and looked them up

They are also called water oozles, which is a pretty cool name.

It’s spelled ouzel.

I don't care if anyone believes me but my pops and I have both individually witnessed American Dippers in SE Minnesota in our stream through the property. Multiple times, too!

I've recently found out these existed and I absolutely adore them! Great video, so cool to see them!

[–]CatVideoBoye 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cool! White-throated dippers have that exact same dance before they dive.

It's incredible the way it dives. What does it usually eats in the water?

[–]birdguy1000birder 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Nymphs and other aquatic larva

I’ve seen them nesting by Donner Lake, in the Sierra.
