In historic art pieces depicting multiple humans, there is a law that at least one of those humans will look like they have no clue how or why they got there. It's like Where's Waldo, except instead of looking for Waldo you're looking for the dude that looks like he just dropped acid.

Why do so many jazz fans and jazz musicians not like Kamasi Washington?

I get that his music is underwhelming compared to what inspired it (almost any music would be imo) but I feel like many people are expecting it to be something it isn’t. Kamasi does things that Coltrane and Pharoah didn’t do, like incorporating R&B and Soul music influences into his compositions (not counting that one Pharoah album that has a bunch of R&B and fusion).

I feel like people aren’t just taking his music on its own terms for what it is and are harshly comparing it to things it’s not. Of course it’s inferior to Coltrane if you compare it to Coltrane, because Coltrane (for most of his career) made what was accepted within the tradition as being jazz music and by the time he wasn’t doing that anymore, almost everything he played was so far removed from the tradition that few couldn’t even recognize it as being such. To my knowledge , he never dabbled in pop or R&B and he wasn’t doing these massive arrangements for choir with a big band orchestra (although Africa/Brass is definitely worth mentioning, it was nowhere near as big or diverse of a band). My point is not to compare but simply point out that Kamasi may not do the same things the greats did to their degree, but he has talents that many of the greats did not have simply because it wasn’t their area of expertise or it was just not something they decided to do. Kamasi is walking his own path.

I’ve heard people complain that Kamasi is making a sort of watered down version of what the greats were doing, but I think it totally misses the point of what he’s doing. He’s heavily influenced by the jazz tradition and his music is certainly primarily jazz-inspired, but what he’s doing isn’t constrained by the limits of tradition. He’s making his own music how he wants it and if it happens to be heavily inspired by jazz then so be it. This is why he channels so much from R&B, soul, and more because he’s open to fusing styles, approaches, and forms. Not just in his lines but even the overall presentation of the music like the way his band dresses and how they release music videos that are actual short films instead of just the band playing.

Personally, I like his arrangements and his saxophone playing. His licks can be very copy/paste and use the same patterns often but almost every jazz musician from Bill Evans to Jaco have this same aspect in their playing, it’s part of what makes them recognizable, their own personal cliches.

I think he has great control with multiphonics and while he is no Pharoah, it is still very much worth listening to what he does because he plays with so much emotion sometimes that it can be very genuine and powerful.

I think that while there is a camp of snobs who will never let the gates of jazz open to him due to his rise to prominence through hip hop, there is a more legitimate camp allowing them to still have a leg to stand on that has a valid reason for being so harshly critical towards him, I just can’t for the life of me figure out exactly why. Obviously he’s not doing the same thing as Wynton or Christian McBride, but I can’t understand why people just can’t accept his more theatrical approach and openness towards R&B and Hip Hop. Jazz doesn’t have to always be about having the appearance of class.

At the end of the day, I saw him open for and play with Herbie Hancock in 2019, so if he’s got Herbie’s respect, then all the haters might be just that and nothing more.

Tl;dr: I can’t figure out a valid reason why jazz enthusiasts generally seem to dislike Kamasi Washington except simple preference.

Edit: Seems like it’s mostly the maximalism that tends to be the dividing line. You either like maximalism or you don’t. Some people say he sold out but I don’t buy it.
