I like say love for a year should be my dad's name, wherever he is now

[–]PuckNuttyCAR - NHL 127 points128 points  (0 children)

That's a beautiful message, man.

Brb, crossposting...

*And it's done

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, just saw that. That’s awesome.

[–]JohnnyVNCRNYR - NHL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And someone probably got a new custom jersey.

[–]M-A88 34 points35 points  (2 children)

French Canadian here: I won’t ever pronounce his name the correct way again. Thank you.

With the first overall pick, the New York Rangers are proud to select. From the Rimouski Oceanic: I Like Say Love for a Year.

[–]jairzinhoMTL - NHL 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Like Joshua Roy becoming Josh Wawa.

[–]MontrealKingLAK - NHL 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a Joshua, I once referred to as Josh Wa in an email. I became chinese.

[–]MOLightningBroTBL - NHL 40 points41 points  (6 children)

Reminds me of the time someone posted thinking the announcer was saying "happy to see you" instead of Athanasiou

[–]IceCreamAttachment 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Or like when I swore Montreal's goalie was Mountaingoat. Or there was a dude on the Stars named Hockeypuck. (I'm very good at not hearing people correctly, lol.)

[–]aessaeNJD - NHL 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Detroit legend Justin Advocator

[–]MaltedMouseBallsSTL - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Loooool every time I heard his name, I thought "who the hell is he Abdelkading for?"

[–]perat0TBL - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well it's not far off as they say Hakanpää as if he's German HACKENBACH

[–]Lav_S92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another good was for a former Habs player was Guillaume Latin dress (Latendresse)

[–]IndependentVerandaDAL - NHL 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This is hilarious, thanks for sharing

[–]7StringplayerSJS - NHL 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Its like someone started the Telephone game with his name and this is what it ended up

[–]georox97COL - NHL 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ah in the same vein as my favourite caption from the 2022 Quest for the Cup ‘Ladies & gentlemen, boys & girls, we have a THAI hockey game’

[–]deathcu6ekLAK - NHL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

New meme/nickname just dropped

[–]Charming_Feature_385MTL - NHL 63 points64 points  (3 children)

English speakers when they have to say a single word in another language

[–]FilobelMTL - NHL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I mean, French announcers aren't much better. They can say the English names fine, but anything else...

I swear the TVA sport guy says "clou d'girofle" instead of Kucherov.

[–]Pere_JoelSEA - NHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best was when Jagr was playing and they'd say it like YAH-GARR

[–]frobile00NJD - NHL 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Why say few word when many word do trick?

[–]Fickle_Cup2207 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My favourite is phillip di giuseppe as Phillip DJ Zappy.

[–]JaqenHgharNYR - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Meme for the rest of his career, let’s fucking go.

Lemme hear ya say ‘love for a year’!!!

[–]bwoah07_gp2VAN - NHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Incorrect subtitles are too funny. 😆

[–]Dozzi92NYR - NHL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a court reporter. LEK/SAI - LOF/FRAIR. That's as close as I can tell in the nonsense language we use.

[–]SharingAndCaring365 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ah I can tell you exactly what happened. They use a human talk to text system. Someone is literally repeating everything the announcer says into a machine that has learned their speech pattern.

When there's a new name, you need to train the system to recognize the name. If you don't, the system will guess...

[–]goldfish_11BOS - NHL 8 points9 points  (1 child)

They really got Borat writing the captions.

[–]AccomplishedBison369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Borat, the AI robot.

[–]chocotripchipMTL - NHL 2 points3 points  (4 children)

People freaking out about AI should read some speech-to-text automatic transcriptions more often.

[–]zenverak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s my favorite

[–]Dozzi92NYR - NHL -1 points0 points  (2 children)

This was more than likely done by a human.

[–]NaritaiSJS - NHL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

All the cc is done via speech-to-text nowadays

[–]Dozzi92NYR - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know the stenographer who does the Yankees. I wish I knew who did the Rangers, I'd try to get on that. Sit at home, get a 7-second-quicker feed to the game, what's not to love?

And the mistake made is a pretty common briefing error for a stenographer, though not exactly briefs that I use.

[–]Ben_UlrandNYR - NHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And here I thought after this preseason he was going to get hate for a year

[–]Pikachu1989COL - NHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck, looks like Love For A Year Jerseys are going off the presses at the Rangers shop tomorrow.

[–]Ready-steadyNSH - NHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This needs to be a shirt

[–]kongartistTOR - NHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]monday_VGCCOL - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love

[–]tilacTOR - NHL 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Reminds me of the time I was watching a Blue Jays game and "car close deppel good glow" hit a home run.

Bous points if you can name the player.

[–]m4tunaNYR - NHL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Carlos Delgado?

[–]tilacTOR - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!

[–]darthfracasWSH - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still closer to the original name than Sauce Castillo was in the NBa

[–]LtLemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like say

[–]Captain_NapsBrandon Wheat Kings - WHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard those announcers last night- CC might be accurate.

[–]Peasantsworth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because of how Sam Rosen pronounces names. At this point in his career he can barely get through any that have more than 4 syllables. I love the dude but he’s getting old.

[–]MangoSlawPHI - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man I watched the replay down below and I’m pretty sure this is exactly what he said

[–]Leather_Change9084OTT - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahaha... I was just recently thinking about how impressive it was that the closed-captioning on my TV was incredibly accurate even with the difficult names. I'm guessing the names were pre-loaded into the CC software voice recognition when I was watching on TSN up here in Canada, but maybe they don't always pre-load the names into MSG (?).

[–]TimeToSackUpLAK - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just now listened to the goal call in another thread and you can hear this spelling plain as day.

[–]2kwatBOS - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the Bruins game I read Tonner Menard got his first goal of his career, never heard of the guy though, might be good?

[–]NazmazhCGY - NHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... those live-captions are sure something. I noticed how much they were struggling to interpret players' names when looking at some of the Flames highlights on nhl.com the other day.

[–]breadKick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's Sam Rosen's fault for calling him Alexei Lafreniere most of the time.
