Sad that there will never be a hand-animated movie that looks this good ever again. I know it’s insanely expensive and a ton of work, but my god it looks amazing.

I’m always blown away by the animation of this film.

It took them over a month to animate some roiling smoke for a few seconds.

Hermano, es verdad.

You should check out some of the animation breakdowns on YouTube. This movie is infinitely more complex and detailed than you imagine, even if you already know it's the greatest animated film ever made.

is that music added on top? or is that the actual soundtrack?

Watch the actual scene instead of this disappointment of a cut-down. The original soundtrack is significantly better, and a lot of great details have been thoughtlessly excised.

I've wanted to live in Neo Tokyo since I first saw it.

Tons of crimes tho, you could even see it in the first frame

Seoul is like Neo Tokyo minus the crime.

Akira combined the red/blue pill as nothing more than a jacket patch before Matrix was even a concept. Wonder if there is an Akira "both" meme in there somewhere.

The Wachowski brothers have said that Akira was a major influence for The Matrix.

Heh. Usually the film is just credited with influencing the bullet time sequences from the The Matrix. I had never thought about the pill iconography actually being an influence on their that concept. Seems plausible.

The fact that they invented colors for this still blows my mind!

Definitely not retro-futurism. More cyberpunk/future-of-the-80s than anything. Very cool, but it just doesn't fit here.

I like the music in this version.

Saw its rerelease in a theatre, the animation is still incredible, and the story holds way better than I remembered (I was a fan of the manga before I saw the film and I used to think that, like Nausicaa, the shortened story for the movie wasn't good.)

About Community

This subreddit focuses on the futurist visions of eras past. However posts may also contain contemporary art with a retrofuturist theme. Futurism was born out of humanity's reaction to a sudden thrust into technological revolution. To the many that witnessed the rapid change, it seemed technological utopia was fast approaching. This unbridled optimism caused the collective imagination to run wild.
