Does anyone know if these old AirPort Express devices can be used with the current OS? I would love to use it for streaming music to my stereo system with its audio output.

Airports and Time Capsules are criminally underrated. Shame that apple discontinued them.

I am also in a problem, how I will replace Time Capsule that has served my reliably for 12 years. Any recomnended routers?

Plug and play worked fine for the most part, but the port was only fast ethernet (100mbp) and it was using a CPU for switching, barely cracking 50-60mbps.

Buy a netgear router, Ubiquiti access points and PoE switch of choice.

Yes - if it’s a rev A I believe you need an older version of OS X To run it. I use my Power Mac G5 in the rare instances I need to reprogram it. If it’s a revision B it should work with even iOS

I used those all the time back in the day, had 3 set up and running at once and streaming music from any app to any device with Airfoil. one of them was a Rev. A and I found a special version of AirPort Utility that got around the block to run on newer macOS.

that was years ago but there may be something similar now!

definitely worth a thorough Google Search. that's how I found it!

Update: thanks to everyone who replied. Unfortunately I have the first gen model so it looks like I’ll need to dig up an old Mac to get it to work.

Could you maybe run an old macos via emuation? It must be possible to emulate a PowerPC era Mac these days, I'd imagine.

You can run the earlier version of airport utility with a patcher.

If you can’t get it working, you can do v similar things with an raspberry pi and kodi is a v beginner friendly distro that ships with airplay audio support. Once upon a time air display worked too but not anymore.

I actually just picked one of these up at a thrift store this week. Pro tip, use the airport utility for windows if you have access to to a PC or bootcamp or VM, to set it up.

I went down the rabbit hole of installing VM machines (only to find out that the guide I looked at was wrong and I needed get an OLDER version of OSX).

The current version of the utility for windows works on windows 7 or 10 and is easy to set up

Best underrated Apple device ever. I think the potentiality of the AirPort Express back in the days was unprecedented.

I bought one when they came out. My high school did not yet have WiFi, and so I would hide it around campus and use it on my laptop when taking notes. Gave the code to a few friends too. Let’s just say they did not have much in terms of network security at the time.
