Please tell me how you built this! I’ve wanted to build an Airplay 2 multi room system for a while now.

  • 3x Airport Express’ for my 3 zones/rooms, de-cased and power supply removed.

  • 3x Cheap STA508 24VDC amplifiers for each zone/room.

  • 1x 24VDC 10A power supply

  • 2x DC buck converters (one set to 5V for fans, one set to 3.3V for the airport express’)

  • 3x 5VDC fans

I have a general question regarding multiroom streaming. Why not put each streamer/amp in the room it is used?

Really clever. Nice work! Would love to hear more.

Thanks, I might post a write up for it.

What am I looking at?

DIY 3 zone multiroom amplifier with built in AirPlay 2.

This is very cool. I have a two room setup with a couple Airport Express and Fosi TB10s in my network closet. Never even thought about removing everything from their cases and putting it into a rack mount enclosure. That would be much cleaner than all the little boxes and power supplies sitting on a rack shelf.

I would definitely be interested in a write up on this.

Looks clean! More info please

Do I see that right, the amps have exposed gain to the front of the case?

Edit: Also, on the psu end, do you have positive or negative running through the flip switch? I'm guessing green/yellow is ground?

Yes the potentiometers are exposed out the front of the casing so it’s easier to make adjustments. This would normally be left ‘set’ as I use my iPhone for volume control via AirPlay.

Active (brown) is running through the toggle switch as an easy way to cut all power if needed. Green/Yellow is earth.

Parts list please 😁

Nice looking work. Can you still buy airport express’s? They were great when they worked but I had so many die on me I gave up on them.

Thanks! Yeah, I got all 3 Airport Express’ second hand off eBay. Fingers crossed these guys last. I wonder if your Airport Express was faulty or the internal power supply died?

I have two sitting down stairs, let me know if your interested.

Know what's even funnier?

That this thing will probably last longer than off-the-shelf solutions.

Sadly had about 3 of them die. Been using raspberry pi’s for airplay1 receivers since then. Best of luck!

Yeah if these die, I might go a similar route. Or maybe ditch AirPlay altogether.
