I watched Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo with my father; and his reaction surprised me.

I’ve always been interested in Japanese cinema especially old black and white samurai movies. When visiting my parents for the weekend, I had Yojimbo on. My father was in the room not really paying attention at first.

Gradually, he started watching the movie too. He is a big fan of Clint Eastwood films including his westerns. Once my dad starting to see the obvious old western influences of the movie, he really got into it. Comparing scenes to their western counterparts.

My father doesn’t really share many of my interests, but he loves me and does his best to humor me sometimes. This was probably the first time he really connected with me over one of my more niche interests. It was a good father/son bonding activity that I will probably remember for a long time.

If you are lucky to still have your father around. Give him a call/hug and send him your love while you can.

TIL A Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone was identified as an unofficial remake of Akira Kurosawa’s Yojimbo, and he received 15% of the western’s revenue, after Kurosawa wrote to Leone about it.

A quote from director Akira Kurosawa’s autobiography

This is from 1981, and I think it’s aged quite well.

“This is one of the bad points about commercialism… These people continually remake films that were successful in the past. They don’t attempt to dream new dreams; only repeat the old ones. Even though it has been proved that a remake never outdoes the original, they persist in their foolishness. I would call it foolishness of the first order. A director filming a remake does so with great deference toward the original work, so it’s like cooking up something strange out of leftovers, and the audience who have to eat this concoction are in an unenviable position, too.”

Akira Kurosawa had a quote similar to Scorseses.

"Regarding American cinema, I could say that much better films were made in the past. Today's American cinema provides the wrong service to the audience. Violence and car crashes are often seen. What pleasure is there in watching such scenes? Old American films expressed human problems quite well, but these days the American cinema has problems. There is no doubt that a film like Jurassic Park (1993) is interesting, but there used to be more impressive films in the past. In contrast, films, like those of Kiarostami, touch the heart and are very beautiful. These new sci-fi, action films, are good but they are not cinema."
