Calculus

Let's say drank a six pack by himself drunk. Both of them get a few pencils, scratch paper, a calculator, and a dervititve cheat sheet.

Let's also assume the rest of the class is either keeping lookout or taking bets.

I teach one section of AP Calculus AB. This is my 4th year teaching it. I tend to get decent AP results.

That said, I have completely abandoned test corrections this year. Many of my students have the same math teacher for 3 years in a row prior to being in my class.

They bomb his algebra 2 tests but can earn back half the points lost doing test corrections. They’re required to explain their mistake and then solve the problem correctly.

Their explanations? “I guessed.” Or some variation of that. And solving correctly ? No… just clearly copied solutions and sent around via a group chat. After 4 years, I just decided to stop doing these corrections.

The test I gave today was announced three weeks ago. I made it known their November assessment had no test corrections. I provided two practice exams, solutions, and plenty of other resources to prepare. Students had also two hours in class to prepare and talk to me. They were freaking out about this test more than any other because their final grade would actually be their grade.

Unsurprisingly, I still had students bomb. And then many students begged me after school to know their score. But when I said to them, “Show me the practice exams you completed,” or “Did you practice on DeltaMath?” they weren’t able to show me they had done either.

My viewpoint is, this is an AP class. It is highly unlikely they’ll have test corrections in college. And maybe I’d consider test corrections if they were meaningful in any way for a majority of students. But they’re not. I waste too many hours reviewing bogus corrections. And the students who get a handful of questions wrong and truly care will take the time to figure out their errors.

So I guess I’m just wondering… am I a total ass for not allowing corrections? Like I’m sorry, but too many of my students have spent their entire high school careers with hyper-inflated grades thanks to the pandemic. And I’m so sick of it.

The vast majority of what you're taught in school and comes up on exams are, in a somewhat colloquial sense, "P-complete". That is, you have a fixed set of theorems you're expected to know, and you can relatively easily find out what you need to do by reading the problem. The only "NP-complete" problems you see in school that I can think of (again, in an unofficial sense) is complex integrals. Whereas, in the majority of maths competitions, they come down to proving something (either explicitly or implicitly, where you get no or few marks for just writing the answer and showing that your answer is correct is more difficult than intuitively guessing it). I believe teaching students such problems in the regular school curriculum would improve general reasoning and logical thinking ability.

I understand wanting to focus on the basics, and that stuff like calculus and linear algebra are far more useful in a direct sense, and also requires more knowledge to be taught in lessons while maths competitions lean more into talent and practise. But maths in school is already too easy, with a lot of room for adding more into the curriculum, and the practise you get is transferrable to other areas.

If you were to tell my high school self that I would be able to achieve this, I wouldn't have believed you.

For context, my calculus classes included:

Calculus 1:

Calculus 3:

• Scalar and Vector fields (Gradient, Divergence, Rotor (Curl)...)

• Complex Analysis (Analytical functions, divergence, complex integrals .. )

• Series (Taylor..)

• Differential Equations (but this time with Laplace transformations)

I'm making this post in hopes that someone else who feels beat down and depressed (like I used to) could maybe find some reassurance and motivation in completing anything that presents a huge academic struggle for them.

I was someone who was pretty horrible at math in my high school. I missed a lot of months of education in my middle school because of some very serious health issues that I was dealing with. I was primarily studying only enough of it to pass, with very unimpressive 2s (Ds) and some occasional 3s (Cs).

When I enrolled in faculty of mechanical engineering, I felt like a biggest dumbass of anyone who was in same year as me. I couldn't for the life of me absorb the material from even some basic subjects like Materials, let alone Calculus 1. I failed Calculus 1 3 times, before I finally realized where I was making some pretty big fuckups. I took my time, I started learning the basics in hopes of building a better foundation for success.

And you wouldn't believe it, I actually passed it, in fact I passed my oral exam on 1st try. It finally felt like I was able to achieve something that I personally believed I wasn't capable of, I proved myself wrong.

I passed calculus 2 and 3 on my 1st try (both written and oral exams) and I've honestly reached the level where people come to me in order to have some stuff from these subjects explained. Keep in mind, some of these people are people that I would compare myself against and feel stupid and inadequate, and yet here I am explaing ins and outs of trigonometric transformation to them.

Point is, you can do it. You're not stupid and you are not lesser than your peers. The only person that you should be competing against is yourself. Perserverence, hard work and strong will (mixed with bit of stubbernes in my case) will get you far and you're going to impress yourself.

So I'm a physics student and I wanted to take discrete math before calculus to be more prepared for the world of academic math and mathematical proofs. I hate it. I genuinely cannot see myself enjoying discrete math. I mean, I'm sure that if I'd spend more time studying I'd be doing better but I just don't understand the logic behind it. It doesn't feel like math, it feels like gibberish with a lot of laws and theorems that I've been told I should remember but I can't understand the reason behind them. For now, I see myself as a drowning person who's just trying to survive the ocean of discrete math just to get to the safe shore of calculus. But will calculus even be harder for me?

Pretty much title. My math teachers from elementary school all the way to senior year of high school taught me absolutely nothing, they never cared about math and would just sit and force us to do worksheets on our own. Math was always my worst grade. I have such a low confidence in math that I’ve tried to take Calculus at my university 3 times, and had to drop it all 3 due to failing the first (or second) exams. I’m a senior in college now taking Calc 1 for the fourth time and I really want to do well, I’m committed to basically teaching myself.

This calc class is no different in style from any of my other ones btw, the whole class layout was changed to where we are just expected to read the textbook at home and turn in worksheets 3x a week that we work on in groups during class. There’s no lecturing or actual teaching.

So, what resources can I use to teach myself? I’ve heard khan academy is good, but I really want to just focus all my energy on the best ones so I don’t have to switch midway due to using different methods etc. I have very low skills in algebra, geometry, etc so I don’t even have the kind of mathematical thinking they expect from someone taking a calculus class. Anything helps!

Ok so I’m a bit worried. I transferred universities and start this upcoming spring. At my current uni I had all my math done. I did statistics, pre-calculus, and applied calculus (I’m a bio major). I heard applied was easier than calculus 1 and it counted as credit there so I did it. Looking back I regret this decision because now at my new university they want me to have calculus 2 and I never took 1. I made As in both my calculus classes but it’s been awhile since I’ve taken them. Any advice for what I should go back and refresh on/ things I should DEFINITELY know BEFORE I start calculus 2? I want to start working problems and practicing so I’m not super far behind to give myself the best chance. TIA :,)

Also still know how to solve limit equations without the calculator because if you're retesting you still probably have to be able to explain how you got the answer. BUT N-E WAYZ I knew how to solve the limits but it ate up so much time so this is how I got that time back.

Calculator: TI-84 Silver edition (the old school one)

Limits:

1. select 'Y='

2. type in the equation knowing how to use '()' to separate the equation properly EX:

   1. Number 3 on the following Worksheet ()

   2. The whole equation go on line 'Y1=' as (3X)/(X+2). Select the 'X,T,O,n' button (the O has a line through the middle) to get the 'X'

   3. Select button '2nd' and then select button 'GRAPH'. Here is where you put in the 'X' values to get the answer. For the equation above the limit is approaching -2 from the RIGHT because of the '+' sign after the number. So now input numbers close to -2 coming from the right on a graph. This would be -1.9, -1.99, -1.999. Just in case you don't know, you type -1.9 then select ENTER, type -1.99 then select ENTER, type -1.999 then select ENTER. You see the numbers getting larger and larger and are negative, that means the answer is negative infinity.

3. Knowing how to separate your equation using parenthesis is important well as knowing what to input as the X values when on the '2ND', 'GRAPH' screen.

EXTRA NOTES:

1. When you see a '-' after the number when equation is stating what the limit is approaching that means from the LEFT and '+' means form the RIGHT

2. 5.3 E-4 mean move the decimal 4 places to the left. .00053. When you get this value when putting in the X values on the (2ND, GRAPH) screen this means you're close to '0'

3. 5.3 E4 means move the decimal 4 places to the right. 53,000. When you get this value when putting in the X values on the (2ND, GRAPH) screen this means you're close to 'INFINITY'

   1. When you have a limit that just has the number; (no '-' or '+' following) then your input values for 'X' on the (2ND GRAPH) screen will be numbers close to that number. EX lim x→−4, the values are -4.01, -4.001, -4.0001, -3.9, -3.99, -3.999. (This is for problem 2 on the worksheet in the provided link above.) For this problem you'll get results that will get larger and larger negative numbers for -4.01 thru -4.001 then all of a sudden larger and larger positive numbers for -3.9 thru -3.999. This mean the the limit DOES NOT EXIST (DNE).

      1. Now if lim x→−4 was lim x→−4- the answer would be negative infinity because its asking values from the LEFT (-4.01, -4.001, -4.0001) due to the '-' located right after the number.

      2. Now if lim x→−4 was lim x→−4+, the answer would be positive infinity because its asking values from the RIGHT (-3.9, -3.99, -3.999) due to the '+' located right after the number.

If you need more help, just keep reiterating that time management (or what ever the issue) is what your struggling with and they will help! I struggled with asking for help and was really hard on myself. Be kind to yourself and acknowledge how you feel ALWAYS but have self awareness to know you need the help and act on that. It took me a number of tries to pass this test and i did it, you MOST DEFINITELY WILL!
