Man, this show is the definition of a LN ad for me. I enjoyed the anime enough to go read it, and coming back to watch it after 11 volumes is painful. The character design is super cute, and I love the voice acting, especially Shimamura. And it's reasonably faithful to the novels (the books have giant blocks of inner monologue, you can only do so much).

But god, the vibe is completely off, somehow. The books feel so grounded, but the anime is so anime-y, with a metric ton of added fanservice, eye-candy scenes that feel flat after cutting the characters' thoughts from the book and music that IMO doesn't match the vibe. Insomniacs is my new favorite and bar slice-of-life romance adaptation, and an Adashima adaptation copy-pasting the direction would go SO hard.

This is one of the best scenes in the anime because it's pretty much 1:1 from the book, but the animation is... Not great.

I started reading the novels a bit after finishing the anime and I don't agree. The novels feel plenty "anime-y" and the adaptation adapts most of those scenes pretty faithfully. Visually we don't have fanservice but we still get a whole chapter of Adachi having fantasies about Shimamura's boobs, we still get the scene in this clip with no differences, we still get all the Nagafuji boob comparisons and Hino groping her (and the whole "I bet all the boys are thinking about what you look like naked" that I fucking hate and only see in anime), all of that is in the books too. The dialogue and story is just as grounded and excellent too. The anime doesn't have that much fanservice, mostly an annoying thigh shot here and there, like the single shot of Shimamura's thighs in this otherwise fanservice free scene.

Otherwise the anime is practically a 1-1 adaptation that just makes cuts when it has to. And I'd argue it makes up for cut monologues with phenomenal direction, voice acting, and music. I actually watched episodes of the anime after reading them in the novels and found them to be relatively equal, comparable experiences (though I prefer book Adachi to anime Adachi, and anime Shimamura to book Shimamura). While scenes like Adachi meeting Shimamura's whole family at the restaurant are great, they also don't add much to the overall story, and the essence of cut monologues is still conveyed through visual storytelling. I think it's a darn good adaptation that just got screwed by Tezuka Pro lacking the ability to animate things well (and AdaShima doesn't even look bad, it just looks like the character designs were too detailed to animate well on crunch).

Give me the benefit of the doubt on this one, because it's weird. That comment took me a while to write because I could also see a similar perspective to yours, and it's why I gave up after staring at my screen and decided to leave it to "vibe" lol.

The books don't get away with the weird stuff, either. I'm onto you, Iruma. Volume 11 that I've just read recently gets really weird really fast, for one thing.

The anime doesn't have that much fanservice, mostly an annoying thigh shit here and there, like the single shot of Shimamura's thighs in this otherwise fanservice free scene.

This was my opinion too, until I (re)watched it with my sister and she started pointing it out at every opportunity and now it's hard to unsee lol.

I prefer book Adachi to anime Adachi, and anime Shimamura to book Shimamura

Hey, no worries. I'm not even complaining about the book (except for the Nagafuji boob stuff, that's annoying. The Adachi thinks about Shimamura's boobs for a chapter is a fun one though). As good as the story is, you can tell it was written by a man, haha. And every episode has its out of place shots and the short skirts are a clear choice for that purpose, but the framing of shots is only actually sus sometimes.

Interesting... Why's that?

Book Adachi has a lot more character to her. She's even more of a disaster than she is in the anime, and her monologues give a lot more specificity to her thoughts and feelings that make her feel more fleshed out. The novel's take also has her with a sort of dry, deadpan sense of humor that is absent in the anime, she has a bluntness and an awkwardness in her mind that the anime captures a lot of but doesn't hit the depths of.

Meanwhile, I don't think that the monologues that got cut down for Shimamura convey the sort of specificity that gives her character significantly more depth. There's definitely a poetry to her monologues that the anime only captures some of, but more than makes up for it with the evocative visual metaphors, overall direction, music, and the nuance of Miku Ito's performance. All of that which was cut from the monologues is added back in as implied through the audiovisual elements, and I felt it gave extra depth to her feelings that the book couldn't evoke as strongly. I think back to the scene where she sits in her room thinking about how the only thing she hates more than maintaining relationships is loneliness (the moment I fell head over heels for the anime), and both versions capture the same general idea, but the anime has Shimamura covered in ice, the camera slowly pulling back, a perfectly fitting music track, and Miku Ito's melancholy yet detached performance, and it sticks with me so much more. Her feelings and the different sides of her personality and the struggle between her fondness for Adachi and fear of actually getting intimate came across to me more powerfully in the anime.

Yeah, the production is unfortunately quite a mess. The character designs and cinematography are excellent, but the animation is a real mess. Somehow, it's still Tezuka Pro's best looking show, lol.

Yeah agree on both lol. Horny Adachi is always entertaining but I never liked the other duo with the boob jokes. Nagafuji and Hino's most memorable chapter, the only that I think I remember well writing this right now is the one where they had the woman drive them around and Hino was thinking about her life.

This is a fun guessing game I always play. I confess Adashima wasn't the easiest (yes I ignored the "tension relief" joke) but I eventually got there lol. He reeaaally likes writing his women.

Ohh I think I see it. The way she thinks, full of metaphors and often tangents is imo beautiful, and I don't have a strong opinion on the adaptation either way. But I think that when I think Shimamura I'm also thinking her sarcastic (?) sense of humor. A lot of times it feels like she's thinking random stuff because it's funny and she's entertaining herself. She never lets any irony pass by unnoticed and is always ready to make fun of a situation or person. I think the anime presented this playful side of her visually, as you said, but much of this characterization got cut in the anime imo. It helps that it's something I pay a lot of attention to in Shimamura because I like that side of her a lot.

Personally I feel like the lack of the characters’ internal monologues really hurts the adaptation, especially for Shimamura. When I watched the anime it sometimes felt like she wasn’t terribly invested in her friendship with Adachi, while reading the novels and having access to her internal monologue made it clear that she was actually quite fond of her and internally dodging the question of how they felt about each other.

Yep, Shimamura is written in a way where 90% of the chapters happen inside her head. It's really cool to read, but also hard to adapt. So so many anime onlies asking if she doesn't like Adachi, or why she's "bitchy", etc.

Like Bloom into You, this was a yuri with actual depth. The entire season is Adachi coming to grips with the idea that she likes girls (or specifically, Shimamura).

It's a shame the anime ended where it did. I would have absolutely loved to see Shimamura's Sword animated. I doubt the whole chapter would be animated, but it's one of the best monologues I've ever read.

I worked at a few summers camps for cadets, and when I was at rmc kingston they had PE evals at the start and end of the program. 60% of the kids 12-18 couldn't do a single chin up. Push/sit ups were better but dozens couldn't do those either. The numbers were better at the end, but nothing to write home about.

They are, it's just another example of how unfit the children in NA are. Youth fitness levels have dropped to something like the 30th percentile in Canada compared globally. IDK what the US is at. Only 20% are meeting physical activity guidelines of 1 hour of moderate exercise daily, and 3 hrs of vigorous activity each week.

Nothing, it's just very slow burn. Most Yuri manga you'll get a confession early enough in, but AdaShi, they're friends forever. Neither confesses for a good while, because they're unsure of their feelings.

They can be if you're not doing them the right way, or if your day-to-day doesn't involve significant movement (even if not the gym).

Notice in both cases that their feet are not firmly planted on the ground. Not having that stability makes thing harder, and means you have less leverage to work against to pull yourself up. It's why in most gym classes they have someone hold your feet down, or have you hook your feet under some structure.
