I was having a quick skim over my Steam library for games to play when I noticed Guns of Icarus Online. I recall jumping in and playing several times in 2014 and having a lot of fun on it with several others, but after a bit of research now the game doesn't seem to have all that in the way of players- steam charts reports the peak in the last 30 days was 403.

What happened? Back during some of the previous steam sales (both last year and the year before) I remember during the sales it did very well, selling for dirt cheap and appearing on the top sellers list, plus it's still holding up very well in terms of Steam reviews, with a 94% score. There was also a lot of YouTube following for it.

Muse Games also launched a kickstarter in 2013 for an 'Adventure Mode'. It seems this has sort of now transitioned into a DLC called 'Alliance Mode' and is set for Fall 2016, which seems to be very delayed from the original kickstarter. This, combined with low playerbase, lack of apparent news for what is going on/has happened, lack of any form of controversy or negative event that led to a decline, leaves me with the question: r/games, what happened to Guns of Icarus Online?

A friend found this game on sale, and recommend we try it out. I went into it expecting it to be just "ok" based on the fact that I had never heard of it, and it was only $3.75.

Ended up actually being blown away with what I've played so far! This game feels amazingly different than most other multiplayer games out there. To start with, you are on a flying airship with a crew of 4, and are free to run around the entire ship. You can pilot it, man a gun, repair different parts, etc. The maps consist of teams of 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 airships.

The fantastic parts to me are -

A) You have a very high life expectancy. You aren't dying every minute like most other games. Last night we actually played a 25 minute match, and did not die the entire time.

B) Because of point A), battles are more drawn out. This means you actually have time to use real teamwork. In fact, you pretty much are guaranteed to do poorly if you don't use teamwork.

C) The environments feel epic. You have plenty of room to where you aren't constantly on top of other crew's airships (unless you want to be). If you get in a fight, and you know you can't win it, you can actually escape, instead of inevitable death. Plus the steampunk theme really feels immerse, both with the airships and the maps.

So far I'm really pleased with the game, and am looking forward to playing some more! Has anyone else played this game for a while, or picked it up recently? What do you think of it?

Edit: here is the Steam page for those interested in checking it out.
