Game Title: Guacamelee! 2
Platforms: PlayStation 4, PC
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uh3NoeIuOgs
Developers: DrinkBox Studios
Review Aggregator:
Areajugones - Urko Miguel - Spanish - 8.5 / 10.0
Guacamelee! 2 provides yet again an exquisite metroidvania adventure where action, platforming and hilarous humor remain as its main assets. However, it lacks new elements to really make a difference.
Attack of the Fanboy - Unknown - 4 / 5 stars
Guacamelee 2 is a brilliantly made game on the presentation front and its few flaws don't limit its enjoyment.
COGconnected - Scott Sullivan - 90 / 100
Guacamelee 2! is a perfect second helping to the hearty offering that was the first title, and fans of the series will be pleased through and through.
Cubed3 - Renan Fontes - 10 / 10
To say Guacamelee! 2 excels as a Metroidvania would be to sell it short. in recent memory.
Destructoid - Chris Carter - 9.5 / 10.0
Not once during my playthrough of Guacamelee 2 did I feel bored or look at the clock, and once I was done, I felt compelled to hunt down everything I'd missed. It's yet another triumph for DrinkBox and they probably have at least one or two more of these in them.
Digital Chumps - Eric Layman - 7 / 10.0
If Guacamelee was a celebration riot through metroidvania, its sequel feels closer to an orderly parade across the same space. Guacamelee! 2 is a warm, expertly designed, devilishly preposterous, and, ultimately, safe return to its Mexiverse.
Digitally Downloaded - Brad L. - 4.5 / 5 stars
Guacamelee! 2 takes everything from the original game and makes it even more enjoyable.
DualShockers - Logan Moore - 9 / 10.0
At the end of the day though for myself, Guacamelee! 2 has reminded me of what games are supposed to be in the first place โ fun. I haven't had as thoroughly as joyful of an experience with any other game this year and I expect I'll be hard pressed to find another like it any time soon.
Easy Allies - Brad Ellis - 9 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2 is an excellent sequel that improves upon the original in nearly every way.
EGM - Evan Slead - 8.5 / 10.0
Drinkbox Studios' Guacamelee! 2 brings back the colorful lands of the living and the dead, but this time around, there's more of a focus on challenging platforming. It's all about Juan's new Pollo powers, which provide new ways to obliterate enemies or traverse around them. It doesn't revolutionize the series or knock other recent platformers out of the water, but Gucamelee!'s sequel is a tight, well-constructed adventure that knows how to crack a joke.
Eurogamer - Vikki Blake - Recommended
Colourful, characterful and disarmingly charming, Guacamelee 2 is a hit.
Everyeye.it - Marco Mottura - Italian - 7.2 / 10.0
A very traditional sequel of a little indie cult: Juan's return is still OK, but ultimately lacks the inspiration and the freshness that made the original so great. Maybe Guacamelee! was simply a better game overall, or maybe smash hits such as Hollow Knight and Dead Cells changed the face of the metroidvania genre for good: eventually Guacamelee! 2 leaves a pretty nice impression, but one that's far from the stellar debut.
Game Informer - Kyle Hilliard - 8.8 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2 nails the Metroid formula while including its own style of combat and a great sense of humor
Game Rant - Dalton Cooper - 4.5 / 5 stars
Guacamelee! 2 is bigger and better than the first game while retaining the original's charm, humor, eye-catching art style, and rewarding Metroidvania-style gameplay.
Game Revolution - Michael Leri - 3.5 / 5 stars
Almost all of Guacamelee 2's positive attributes can be applied to either entry in the franchise. Both have smooth controls, a lovely soundtrack, clever dialogue, and a striking visual style. But ingenuity is the key differentiating factor and that's what drags down Guacamelee 2 from achieving the same level of greatness.
Gameblog - Julien Inverno - French - 7 / 10
Very similar to his predecessor but now playable up to four friends, Guacamelee! 2 always offers a mastered Metroidvania adventure, fun and colorful.
GameMAG - Azzy - Russian - 9 / 10
Guacamelee! 2 is a great adventure in a colorful world with deep mechanics, interesting style, good jokes and funny references. If you love metroidvania genre and liked the first game, then you should buy a sequel immediately.
GameSpace - William Murphy - 8.5 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2 is a perfect sequel, but I still can't help wish there was a bit more ingenuity too. The genre's come a long way and seen lots of other hits since 2013. But Juan still has the skills to go the distance, and DrinkBox Studios' sequel is nothing short of brilliant and genuinely a joy to play. Recommended.
GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 9 / 10.0
If you enjoyed the original Guacamelee!, this sequel is an absolute must.
GameSpot - Justin Clark - 9 / 10
Guacamelee 2 doubles down on what worked in the original and presents the most formidable challenges yet.
GamingBolt - Ravi Sinha - 9 / 10.0
Beautifully brought to life in vivid art-style, Guacamelee! 2 is a worthy follow-up and an essential experience. It doesn't change too much but offers a satisfying and challenging adventure for even the most jaded Metroidvania fan.
GamingTrend - Bryan Lawver - 80 / 100
Guacamelee 2 recaptures everything that made the original great and adds a few new tricks for good measure. It's a joy to look at and it feels great to play, especially when it focuses on challenging platforming. The game feels a little padded out with lots of backtracking and locked-room combat sequences, but it's still an absolute blast to play.
Hardcore Gamer - Jeremy Peeples - 4 / 5.0
Guacamelee! 2 is exactly the kind of game a sequel should be in terms of its gameplay.
Heavy - Elton Jones - 9 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2! helps the series graduate from an upper mid-card luchador to a main event level strongman that ultimately shines.
Hobby Consolas - Elisabeth Lรณpez - Spanish - 86 / 100
Guacamelee! 2 keeps the essence of the first delivery and takes it a little further thanks to new powers, enemies, levels, humor and winks. Although there are some sections more difficult and small screen failures playing cooperatively, it's one of the best action and 2D platforms proposals of the year.
IGN - Jonathon Dornbush - 9.3 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2 is a hilarious, challenging, and rewarding follow-up to Drinkbox's original. It expands on the first's ideas in so many great ways, and marries a complex but understandable set of moves to both its combat and platforming.
IGN Italy - Gianluca Loggia - Italian - 8.4 / 10.0
Guacamelee 2 is as good as the first episode: if you loved the original one, five years ago, you'll like this too. Wonderful art direction, great music, very good gameplay, just a little bit frustrating sometimes.
IGN Spain - Juan Garcรญa - Spanish - 9 / 10.0
A game that's build over first's game basics, and manages to improve almost everything of that game, making Guacamelee! 2 an excellent metroidvania, but a less surprising game.
Just Push Start - Grant E. Gaines - 4.5 / 5.0
Despite being challenging, especially if you want the optional true end, Guacamelee! 2 retains everything that made the original great.
Metro GameCentral - GameCentral - 8 / 10
Only a small improvement on the first game but this is still one of the most original Metroidvanias around, in terms of both its setting and its gameplay.
NEOsite - Paweล Musiolik - Polish - 9.5 / 10.0
Guacamelee! 2 is making approach - more and better. The core of the game was not changed, the platforming sections and the fighting with enemies were balanced, cooperation for four players was added, and an even greater dose of meme-fueled humor was added. True Gem.
PC Invasion - Colin Murphy - 9 / 10
Guacamelee! 2 has a few minor issues, but the core is so good and the game improves in all the right ways on its predecessor.
PlayStation LifeStyle - Paulmichael Contreras - 9.5 / 10.0
Guacamelee! 2 is the sequel the original deserves. Fast, fun, funny, challenging, and chicken-filled, Juan Aguacate shows us he's still got a few tricks up his mangas (sleeves), especially when he takes on his chicken form. Buying Guacamelee! 2 for $19.99 at launch is a no-brainer for fans of the original, as well as fans of platformers, beat-em-ups, co-op games, and anyone who wants to let their inner Luchador soar.
PlayStation Universe - John-Paul Jones - 9 / 10.0
Though it sticks rigidly close to the template that made the original such a success it ultimately matters little - Guacamelee 2 is one of the finest platformers of the year.
PSX Brasil - Ivan Nikolai Barkow Castilho - Portuguese - 97 / 100
Guacamelee! 2 is a must have title.
Push Square - Stephen Tailby - 8 / 10
Guacamelee! 2 is a worthy sequel to one of the finest modern Metroidvania games. Its blend of challenging platforming, satisfying combat, and new abilities makes for a thoroughly entertaining experience. Occasionally it can feel like you're spinning too many plates, especially in multiplayer, but by and large, Juan's new adventure is a compelling treat that you'd be loco to miss.
Saudi Gamer - ุนุตุงู ุงูุดููุงู - Arabic - 7 / 10
An enjoyable and funny game with a decent amount of content and challenge, but lacks a bit of polish and variety.
Slant Magazine - Aaron Riccio - 5 / 5 stars
Super-charged in almost every way, Guacamelee! 2 makes its predecessor look like a backyard wrestling match.
Stevivor - Steve Wright - 9 / 10.0
Once you get the hang of it, Guacamelee 2 really is for everyone โ challenging, but not too challenging
TheSixthAxis - Jake Durasamy - 10 / 10
I'm not going to lie, Guacamelee! 2 is easily one of the most fun games I've played this year and it's hard to fault it even at its most infuriatingly challenging moments. The game has incredible presentation, great level design and is just as good whether playing solo or in co-op. If you're looking for a light hearted Metroidvania or 2D platformer to play on the PS4, then you need Guacamelee! 2 in you life.
Twinfinite - Tom Hopkins - 4 / 5.0
The structure of Juan's journey may feel overly familiar to anyone that played Drinkbox's first game, but Guacamelee 2 doubles down on the style, personality, and gameplay that made it such a joy to play. The adventure is full of silly jokes and unique characters, it's a much longer experience, and the combat is deep and engaging enough that it's possible to look past the fact that you've seen most of it before.
USgamer - Mike Williams - 4 / 5 stars
Guacamelee 2 builds on the same charm and platforming core as the first game.
Video Chums - Tyler Hall - 8.3 / 10.0
Guacamelee! 2 sticks closely to the core formula that made the original a massive success.
VideoGamer - Colm Ahern - 7 / 10
While its impact isn't as great as the original, Guacamelee 2 is a reminder of how good combat and traversal can feel when married together as they are in this 2D platformer-cum-brawler.
We Got This Covered - Eric Hall - 3.5 / 5 stars
Guacamelee! 2 is another solid, platforming gem from DrinkBox Studios. The world is bigger and badder, and improvements to the shop and Pollo power make Juan's latest quest a success. However, the sequel's extreme similarity to the original may be off-putting for those wanting more.
