false

The TL;DR of this is "Pick it up, but be aware going in"

So this is a sort of Remaster/Remake combo if that makes sense. The core game is definitely there, but they just added a lot to it and honestly some might see it as major padding.

For those of you who are unaware, the standard gameflow of the original ActRaiser was as follows: Side Scrolling Segment -> City Sim -> Side Scrolling Segment with Boss. All in all each area took about an hour and 15 minutes at most and that was IF you were maxing out your worlds population for max level gains. Added up it lead to roughly 8 1/2 hours of gameplay for the entire game and it's a hell fo a ride throughout.

In ActRaiser Renaissance the same game flow is there, but now each area has an area specific plot ala Dragon Quest, a hero character you raise, side quests, tower defense segments (yes, you heard that right) LOTS of dialog and a few more side scrolling segments thrown into the mix, all of which adds to a significantly increased playtime. On the original Version the first area (Filmore) takes me roughly 45 minutes, in the remake Filmore took me over 2 hours, and while that was me going through and maxing out the town that's still a significant increase.

Also, the villain is named Tanzra rather than Death Heim and while that is what he was originally called in the Japanese version which sounds cooler: "Im off to slay Tanzra" or "I'm off to slay Death Heim" (if you answered the first one you are a sad, strange little person and I pity you).

Look, for me so far it's worth the price I paid. I'll also admit that I had some Nintendo Coins saved so I didn't pay near the full $30 and I'm also a die hard Quintet fan but still. Do your research before jumping in, maybe wait for Easy Allies or Arlo or whoever your preferred YouTuber is to release a review before buying.

Who's ready for an ActRaiser reboot?

It was such a unique game for the time. For those unfamiliar, it was an early SNES title that alternated between 2D action platformer and simplistic top down city building in a fantasy setting. You control a "god" who takes human form to fight monsters in different areas of the world to make them habitable for humans, which leads to the top down city building/defense segments, where you play as this little cherub managing the town's development and fighting monsters trying to destroy it.

They made a sequel, which was absolutely gorgeous looking and had one of my favorite SNES soundtracks of all time, but they ditched the city building in favor of all action platforming. Plus it's fucking hard. It's still a great game and worth your time if you like a challenge, but they took away what made it unique and that's probably why it flopped.

I think all of the cool shit they could do with that concept now. They could make the world building segments way more expansive and in-depth, maybe kinda like Cities Skylines meets Kingdom Rush, and have the action segments be kinda like a mini-Metroidvania style; if they wanted to go 3D, they could make it a challenging Dark Souls style.

The game was developed by Quintet, who also did the Gaia Trilogy (Soulblazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma), and was published by Enix before they merged with Square. Quintet went tits up, but I think Square Enix still holds the rights to the franchise.

Sadly, the odds of it making a comeback after 30 years are probably about as high as a Legacy of Kain sequel.

ActRaiser Renaissance Siege tips

Sieges can be a pain. Here are some easy tips.

Before that my only gripe is you don't know where palisades can be placed until you are in a siege. Learn where these are so you can place towers better.

  1. Place towers next to palisades and choke enemies toward them.

  2. Once you get summoning bells, do the same to lure mobs.

  3. Heroes are towers in their own right so place them them same way

  4. Use summoning bells to gather groups then drop miracles on them.

  5. Don't blow all your bells initially, save them for replacement.

Sieges are hard until you get Philotas as a summonable then it becomes easier. He is a tank with a huge smash, so use him for ground mobs. Later on you can mostly free for all who you summon. Oh and it's not explicitly stated unless you look at Ally Profiles but each hero offers a buff to other heroes and buildings.

Hope this helps!

Edit: One extra thing! Miraculous wind is an excellent way to pull enemies around the map a little bit, use it if you need to gather enemies up to a certain choke point!
