30 Rock

Donald Glover Says the ‘Fear’ from the ‘SNL’ Writers Room Was Brought Over to ’30 Rock’; Didn’t Want ‘Atlanta’ to Employ the Same Behind-the-Scenes Tactics

What are the 30 Rock lines that you think about all the time, but can never use in real life because they’re so wacky and irrelevant (or, out of context make you sound like a terrible person)?

TIL In high school, Donald Glover was voted "Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons." In 2006, Glover sent writing samples to David Miner, which included a spec script he had written for The Simpsons. Miner and Tina Fey were impressed by Glover's work and hired him to become a writer for 30 Rock.

TIL a young Tina Fey provided voices for a pinball machine called Medieval Madness in 1997 as two princesses, the dialogue for the game was written by future 30 Rock co-star Scott Adsit

Gosh, 30 Rock is just brilliant.

I’m rewatching it for at least the 10th time and I’m STILL catching jokes that I’ve missed in the past. This show is a masterclass in both traditional and subversive comedy, packing both in so tightly with a million jokes a minute. I wish so much that we could see their take on today’s issues. Tina Fey is the absolute best.

Edit: Omg, my first time on the front page! Seems fitting that it is for my love of one of the best shows of all time! And thanks for the awards!

Edit 2: I just wanna say that you all have totally warmed my heart. I don't have any friends that enjoy this show in my real life, so it's really awesome to be able to share this with other fans of the show.

TIL At the end of high school, Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, was voted “Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons.” Then at the age of 23, Glover was hired by Tina Fey to write for 30 Rock after he submitted a spec script (a non-commissioned unsolicited screenplay) about The Simpsons.

I often think about the fact that the 2009-2010 NBC Thursday night comedy line up featured: Community, Parks & Rec, The Office, and 30 Rock

I remember very vividly watching these shows everything Thursday night, but I did not appreciate at the time how impossibly perfect the line up was. What are other perfect TV line ups you remember watching?

TIL Donald Glover was voted "Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons" in high school. In his last year of college, it was a spec script he wrote for The Simpsons that started his career as a writer for 30 Rock.

TIL Tina Fey was slashed in the face by a stranger in an alley by her house in kindergarten. The attack left a large scar on the left side of her face. In "30 Rock" her character favored her right side, although she states she was fairly unaware of it growing up. "I was a very confident little kid."

Do you use any 30 Rock-isms in your everyday life? If so, which ones?

I use “that’s awesome, possum” from the head and the hair episode constantly. Like, several times a week. For a while I didn’t even realize what it was from; I’ve just watched every episode so many times it must’ve seeped into my subconscious.

I also say “I want to go to there” pretty frequently.

Honorable mention for “Science is whatever we want it to be”, which I accidentally said to a group of kids one time while teaching them about the water cycle.

Edit: …you guys are making me realize I actually use way more of these than I thought. Keep ‘em coming.

TIL that in the 1st episode of 30 Rock, after Jack discusses how he developed the Trivection oven, GE ran an ad during commercial break to make sure the audience knew it was a real product, not something writers made up as a joke for the show.

I ADORE this show. It's pure magic, and funny in a way nothing else will ever be. But I don't understand how your central character who's supposed to look unimpressive and has jokes made about her looks all the time, can be played by TINA FEY.

She's so utterly gorgeous throughout the show, and not even in some "unconventional" way. She's thin, has fab skin, cheekbones, great hair, just seriously beautiful. And the whole show is predicated around her lack of good looks?! I can understand maybe it's about how SHE doesn't think she's pretty, but even then, to really drive home the point, get a less pretty but competent actor maybe?

I guess TV/Hollywood doesn't work like that :)

PS: This sub is brilliant, one of the best ones ever. Keep it up 💙
