That's the way I walked to University, to the left on the other side is a little water fountain right?

[–]lightspeedx 28 points29 points  (0 children)

You're asking us? How drunk were you during college?

[–]beaverpilot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is correct, you can just barely see the Dom

Was the closest thing the Carolingian empire had to a set capitol wasn't it?

[–]ProfDumm 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Yes, but the Frankish Empire was only dubbed Carolingian Empire from the coronation of Charlemagne as emperor (800 D), whose favorite city Aachen was, onwords and was already seperated in 843 (Treaty of Verdun). The Aachen Cathedral remained the place of the coronation of Roman-German Kings for most of the times of the Holy Roman Empire though.

Been there, felt like such a normal church considering all of the history I would have expected more. Atleast some kind of information provided

[–]regdayrf2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Aachen Cathedral is special, because the main part of the building was constructed in 800 AD.

There's more impressive buildings from 1400, 1600 or 1800. For its time, Aachen Cathedral is special.

[–]ProfDumm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't remember it that much and I thought at least there is some form at information at the thrown or something, but afterall it is just a normal church. The thing to visit is obviously the cathedral treasury. And if you want some information about the cathedral, the 3d tour provides a bit of them: https://www.aachenerdom.de/en/cathedral-experience/3d-virtual-tour/

[–]beaverpilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the time it was a big church, you have to remember that the big cathedrals we know are from, 1600s - 1800s this is from 800

Nice photo! Since I know that place I went there and made a video today so people can see how the place looks when filmed with a regular smartphone camera: https://imgur.com/itdST6z

even on sidewalk, you have to just leave 1.5m for pedestrians, but in reality

This is a weird but moderately entertaining side track.

That's convenient.

Deutschland

[–]windoge_os 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Unerwartet schön tatsächlich. Ich mag das Bild.

[–]NeoTheLeader 5 points6 points  (2 children)

"Unerwartet schön"? Wieso denn unerwartet?

[–]Xiaopai2 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I think it is used as an missleading pars pro toto for the Battle of Hürtgen Forest, which "was the longest battle on German ground during World War II and is the longest single battle the U.S. Army has ever fought.", lasting 4 months, taking place almost next to Aachen and "ended in a German defensive victory".

      [–]WikiSummarizerBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Battle of Hürtgen Forest

The Battle of Hürtgen Forest (German: Schlacht im Hürtgenwald) was a series of fierce battles fought from 19 September to 16 December 1944, between American and German forces on the Western Front during World War II, in the Hürtgen Forest, a 140 km2 (54 sq mi) area about 5 km (3. 1 mi) east of the Belgian–German border. It was the longest battle on German ground during World War II and is the longest single battle the U.S. Army has ever fought.

We could live on streets like this in America if it wasn’t for cars

      [–]Spready_Unsettling 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Just imagine how much better life would be without the constant noise and pollution. Imagine actually sitting anywhere in your towns vibrant center, without being relegated to the side or having to shout over the din of traffic.

      RWTH?

      [–]RustedRelics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many European cities are so lovely. Often pedestrian friendly. With curves and squares and promenades along waterways. And rich history baked into stone and brick. I lived in Manhattan and now call Philadelphia home. Both have their unique charms, but nothing compared with the romance of many European cities.

      [–]MedicallyMike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

      I’m Aachen to go there!

      [–]nevadaar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

American City planners in the 50s be like: "this area needs more parking lots as well as an interstate cutting right through it so people can get here quickly, let's go ahead and bulldoze a bunch of these buildings"

      [–]Verna_Davis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So beautiful! Is it sunset in Autumn? Just like the screensaver.

      [–]hijo1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Germany seems like an ideal holiday destination in the autumn. Is it a peak tourist time?

      [–]Gonzo67824 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No, summer is peak tourist time, with a second peak in the three weeks before Christmas

      [–]StarTroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds good for me then, I'd love to visit Germany while it's quieter and the weather is moodier.

My anxiety immediately calmed just looking at this picture. Maybe I need to move to Germany.

      [–]LindeMaple 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Or maybe we should start building esthetically pleasing buildings everywhere else too....

      [–]Poker-Junk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers to that! If I never see another reflective glass square or rectangle, it'll be too soon.

      [–]LindeMaple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany is so beautiful! I hope that when they rebuilt from the floods the outside of the buildings look like this, and the inside is modern, energy efficient, and comfortable.
