Glad he highlighted the visual/scene direction of the show as one of its strengths. Seriously. I watched the first episode when it aired on a whim, and it ended up being one of my few 10/10s. I legitimately bawled (like, ugly-cried) at episode 12 and found it to be one of the most cathartic scenes I've ever watched. How the fuck did that happen? Fucking Madhouse man.

[–]a_pale_horsehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cuteisanarchy 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Another example of great scene direction that hit me hard was the way they combine Hinata's story with the helicopter ride in E11 - you get both her telling the story as well and the depiction of the event itself over some really good, sad-feeling music while also watching the concerned reactions of her friends afterward in a way that's much more dynamic and expressive than just watching a straight telling of the story.

[–]tobasoft 28 points29 points  (7 children)

This. I held out at until the end of 12 and then a river of manly tears were shed.

[–]Foolsirony 19 points20 points  (6 children)

You wanna know the worst thing? Watching this video I teared up again just because he talked about it. It was that powerful of an episode.

[–]notaninterestinguser 5 points6 points  (4 children)

When I heard the song that played during that scene again I started full on crying. Its one reason I disagree with his criticism of the repetitive music, something about the super stripped down, innocent sounding version of the track is just devastating.

[–]Kilo181https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kilo181 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I think when he said repetitive, he was talking about the re-use of insert songs and not the actual quality of the insert songs themselves.

[–]AkodoRyuhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/AkodoRyu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cried whenever I've head Hikaru Nara for w while. I still feel the tingle, even though I've spend a week or so getting used to it and it's my ringtone now. Some shows just do that.

[–]Zydicohttps://anilist.co/user/Zydico 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The chase scene absolutely blew me away. One of the best scenes that stood out in the past few seasons

[–]Numinak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'll admit that episode was the first time I've had tears running out of my eyes in a while. It must've hit a bullseye for me.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Madhouse

Sold.

[–]Forgotten_homework 279 points280 points  (75 children)

I'm glad an anime like this exists. Hopefully it succeeded in Japan as well so that Atsuko Ishizuka (NGNL, Sakurasou, Hanayamata) can do even greater things.

At the same time, I wasn't enamoured by SoraYori nearly as much as most. The more praise I see the worse I feel that I'm left out yet again.

[–]a_pale_horsehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cuteisanarchy 50 points51 points  (6 children)

Take this with a grain of salt because it's an anonymous post whose source is a number of pictures, but this site is talking about how it's selling well enough that the Bluray is off the shelf before its official release date in a number of big stores (Sofmap, Animate, Toranoana, Gamers) and many of the comments are discussing how well it's doing in preorders online as well.

[–]_qoaleth 15 points16 points  (1 child)

As a purely anecdotal point, I went to look into buying the Japanese BluRays because I loved the show so much and the first pressing of both Part 1 and Part 2 have long since sold out....and they don't even come out for several more months. I just want that nendoroid announcement...

[–]SocketTubeyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zurheide 76 points77 points  (16 children)

That's exactly how I feel about Houseki no Kuni

I absolutely enjoyed it, and I would be thrilled to see a season 2 announcement, but I definitely can't give it higher than an 8/10

[–]_qoaleth 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I've been comparing Sora to Shirobako a lot - I honestly would say both shows are absolutely perfect in execution down to the last second. That having been said, a Shirobako 10 for me is a show that literally couldn't be improved but nevertheless is not my favorite show of all time. I would say the same thing with Sora - I will recommend it to anyone and everyone as a show you have to watch, but its not going to be the sort of show that becomes an obsession like, say, a Bleach (not that its a 10) or a One Piece can be.

[–]Edl01https://myanimelist.net/profile/edl01 9 points10 points  (1 child)

a Shirobako 10 for me is a show that literally couldn't be improved but nevertheless is not my favorite show of all time

That's pretty much exactly how I'd describe my love of Girls und Panzer Der Film. It didn't affect me on any deep level, but considering what they wanted to make I'm really not sure how they could have done a better job. They hit every note with such brimming confidence that anything less than a 10 feels dishonest.

[–]Sulegodhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Sulegod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have that with both Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho and Houseki no Kuni... I liked both... Yorimoi got a 7/10 and Houseki a 8/10 from me, but I definitely don't give them the same praise I see people here giving...

Would absolutely love a second season for Houseki no Kuni tho... hope it happens

[–]MetaThPr4hhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h 43 points44 points  (20 children)

The more praise I see the worse I feel that I'm left out yet again.

Tell me more about that, I liked it (7/10) but then I see an 8.61 on MAL and people calling it the best of the best and it's leaving me wondering if I watched the same show as them.

Atsuko Ishizuka (NGNL, Sakurasou, Hanayamata)

Damn that's a nice list, I had a blast with those three shows.

[–]Sprite_isnt_lemonadehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Sprite_isnt_Holo 33 points34 points  (1 child)

That's just shows in general though.

I felt the same way as you with made in Abyss, although with a larger rating difference. Some shows just don't "hit" someone as well as everyone else.

[–]Bainoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popularity plays a big role, apparently. I guess having a large amount of watchers means higher probability to have some who will call them "best of the best" (and more people to upvote those comments). At least I feel like those I enjoy the most usually aren't in the hugely popular tier.

[–]ClearingFlagshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Sometimes different things resonate differently with people, and that's not a bad thing.

The themes just might not have hit you as hard as they did others, and honestly despite not hitting too hard with me I enjoyed it just way too much and had to give it a 10. It was just so damn well done. The sound, direction, art design, and having an anime with characters that don't feel like tropes is just too much good stuff for me to give it less than that, considering how fun it was to watch.

[–]heychrisfoxhttps://anilist.co/user/heychrisfox 16 points17 points  (2 children)

This is the actual key. Some people think My Hero Academia is a masterclass of storytelling, that it is the pinnacle of a fantastic story arc. Maybe that's true, and maybe it's not. But for those people, it's great. The same can be said for A Place Further. The same can be said for Highschool DxD.

Different strokes. People like different things and that's good, because it means that everyone gets more stuff overall, whether it's for them or not.

[–]maybeanastronaut 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Imho, most of us on this subreddit have a lightly developed critical vocabulary and because of that a vague sense of our own taste, usually put forward in terms of examples, MALs. (Also successful things are usually harder to describe than unsuccessful things because everything works together to form a unified whole rather than things sticking out.)

A lot of us will point to "storytelling" as the strength of a show, but will be unable to disentangle the different aspects of storytelling and point to exactly what we like and how.

For example, for one person good storytelling might be storytelling that is character driven, which is to say that the character's internal conflicts, their personality traits, and the decisions that flow out of these things are what the show focuses on and relies on to generate interest. There can, however, be a lot of different kinds of character driven plots. Is the plot primarily one that describes the character, their background, their personality, what it really feels like to be them at their time in that time of their life? Maybe instead it is more exploratory, taking a bunch of different kinds of characters and putting them together and seeing how they react and showing how different personalities work that way. Maybe it's based on development, or even it is moralistic, dealing with an inner conflict, a set of defining decisions, and what they lead to.

The fun of a forum is teasing all this stuff out though, trying to bring people around to appeal, as well as lots of joking and stuff.

[–]heychrisfoxhttps://anilist.co/user/heychrisfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of that. But I like to discourage people from feeling bad for liking things they like, and disliking things they dislike. We can all agree on what is "better" or "the best," but if everyone does that for what they enjoy, then there's less diversity, and less fun.

[–]IISuperSlothIIhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/IISuperSlothII 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I gave it an 8, but I'm really fucking happy it's got an 8.61 on MAL tbh, it's definitely a show I thoroughly enjoyed and glad it went over well.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found FMAB to be an average show but it's the best ranked anime and everbody constantly praise it.

[–]Fapashi_kashi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The level of enjoyment everyone else was having on the discussion thread was so different to mine, i realized fast that it wasn't for me.

Atsuko Ishizuka (NGNL, Sakurasou, Hanayamata)

Now that you mention that, i didn't finish Sakurasou and Hanayamata either, so maybe i just don't like a recurrent aspect of that creator's works.

[–]VioletPark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preferences are subjetive and respectable. Nobody (who is not a jerk) is going to lynch you because you didn't enjoyed as much as them.

[–]goffer54https://myanimelist.net/profile/goffer54 29 points30 points  (5 children)

Hell, I gave it a 9/10 and I still feel like I've underappreciated it just because of how /r/anime talks about it. This show is getting ridiculous levels of praise. And, y'know what? I don't care that I think Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho isn't as good as /r/anime thinks it is; I still like seeing it praised.

[–]Frostivus 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I think it personally resonates with some of us because of our circumstances. If at any point in life you ever were in the same position as any of the girls -- ostracized, shellshocked with grief, wallowing in stagnation, it becomes extremely real to you. This is further accentuated by the thorough research of the source material to maintain that suspension of disbelief.

For me, currently, I was in what was probably the worst mental anguish in this chapter of my life, but seeing the courage in Kimari, and the powerful themes of the show made my heart soar. Sora Yori's OP makes me wake up in the morning. Sora Yori was an amazing piece that just happened to come to me at the right time, and for this reason it will hold a special place in my heart, and I'm sure the same can be said for most of the people who hold it in such high praise.

[–]NotEvenEvanhttps://anilist.co/user/NotEvenEvan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for putting my exact thoughts into words. I also gave it a 9/10 because it’s an amazing show and I love it, but at the same time I feel left out by everyone on r/anime praising it to hell and giving it a 10/10 and AoTY.

[–]cpc2https://myanimelist.net/profile/cpc2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sometimes a show will just not click with you, there isn't anything that is loved universally. The same happened with me with things like Clannad, I thought it was fine but felt a bit left out because I didn't relate to the characters as much... But I understand that some people praise it.

This will happen with many other shows, sooner or later you will find something else that you truly love. For me Sora Yori might have been the single best show I've seen in a long time, I'm glad something finally "got me" (although I also understand it won't be the same experience for most people).

[–]omfgkevinhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/omfgkevin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel sort of the same way.

I enjoyed the show a lot, though I didn't feel like the hyperbole this video came out straight up with "LITERALLY BEST SHOW EVER" sort of thing. It was good, and I liked it, but there were some weak moments for me, specifically with the mother and her backstory just kinda makes me face palm.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the same time, I wasn't enamoured by SoraYori nearly as much as most. The more praise I see the worse I feel that I'm left out yet again.

Some shows just resonate with people a lot more than others. I think a lot of people who absolutely love SoraYori (myself included) are people who feel like the monotonous daily life is getting to them and yearn for the freedom to escape and explore the far-reaches of the world.

These girls went to Antarctica. What the hell was I doing when I was their age. (Obviously it's just an anime and not "real" but still, it makes me feel I haven't been doing much with my life so far).

It's still a great anime even if you can't relate to it, so for people who can relate to it, it becomes amazing.

This show is wonderful and the review is excellent, managing to reflect so many of my thoughts about the show in just 15 minutes is not easy.

This show is really dense with craft, and when I'm impressed with a particular moment in the show, there's barely time to appreciate it before you're hit with another impressive moment. This show is consistently excellent from one end to the other, that's incredible!

Also, it's a little sad that the Episode discussion threads for Sora Yori are gone. The user that created them deleted their account, so you can't find those threads in the search function anymore! That means anyone watching this show from now on will not get to see the discussions of each episode and share enjoyment of the episode with the group.

Edit: For anyone reading this who wanted to see those episode discussions, here's the link https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/87i0f7/spoilers_sora_yori_mo_tooi_basho_episode_13/

That's the link for episode 13, but inside that link you can find links to the earlier episode discussions as well, just don't scroll below the opening thread text to avoid spoilers.

Not to mention promising spinoffs of Kaiji and SAO

Did Mother's Basement just say something potentially positive about SAO?

Honestly really liked this video. I definitely loved Sora Yori and this video does a great job of vocalizing and pointing out a lot of its strong points. Hopefully this helps promote more and more anime original projects as I've been really digging them recently (such as Princess Principal).

[–]CFftVoNhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/CFftVoN 16 points17 points  (1 child)

No, he said something potentially positive about Studio 3Hz, who is producing that SAO series and produced Princess Principal. I'm not necessarily excited about the SAO series, but I am absolutely excited about the opportunity for it to make them boatloads of money off of it so they can make more cool original shit like they did with Princess Principal and Flip Flappers.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The new 3Hz SAO anime is a spinoff written by the author of Kino's Journey. Already you have my favorite studio, my favorite writer, and my favorite franchise. Can you guess how hyped I am?

[–]Arachnophobic-https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic 41 points42 points  (1 child)

This show still continues to do things to me. After reading how it helped some people get out of depression or some rut in their lives they were stuck in, I felt like crying again. I cannot believe a 13-episode show left such a big impact on me.

Thanks for the shilling, this is indeed one show I would wholeheartedly recommend to almost anyone.

Jukki Hanada really exceeded himself with this script. He took the heart-warmingly funny character interactions from K-On!! and the well-built and realistic drama from Hibike! (although I believe most of the credit for that should go to the author of the source novels, but I'm sure Hanada imbibed a good amount of it when converting it into a screenplay) and crafted something I'm in awe of. So many elements in the show tie into each other and its main themes that I'm not sure I'll ever finish listing them.

[–]Nippon_ninjahttps://kitsu.io/users/Nippon_ninja 59 points60 points  (1 child)

I'm five episodes in and loving it, especially the small details like the Instagram boomerang at the beginning of each episode.

[–]StaniXhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Staniweeb 79 points80 points  (13 children)

Calling it the best moe style show of all time is fighting words around here. I haven't seen it yet, but its definitely my next show to watch.

[–]ClearingFlagshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ClearingFlags 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm not even a huge fan of moe shows, and this has already become one of my all time favorite anime. Ever.

So yeah, if you like moe you'll probably enjoy it a lot.

[–]DieDungeonhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Telehoplos 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I suppose it depends on the definition of 'moe'.

[–]eetsumkaushttps://myanimelist.net/profile/kausdc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's a show with a bunch of cute girls, but I doubt I'd call it moe

[–]benoxxxx 20 points21 points  (7 children)

I haven't seen an insane amount of moe shows but it's certainly the best I have seen.

And that means, yes, better than K-On, in my honest opinion. I adore K-On, but if I'm going to be real, it's just not even close. A whole other league.

[–]blindfremenhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/blindfremen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you got it flipped around, bud 😤

[–]BloodyLlama 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I must be completely missing something, because I adore K-On as well but think Further than the Universe is a complete bore.

[–]benoxxxx 17 points18 points  (2 children)

With SOL-type shows especially I really think that the mindset you're in when you start watching it makes a load of difference. There have been loads of SOL shows that I've found boring and dropped, only to come back to them in a different stage of life and really love them/see a whole other side to them.

[–]BloodyLlama 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've watched a couple dozen SoL shows, and some of them are among my favorite animes. My issue isn't with SoL, it's that I don't think this show is very interesting. I don't think the characters are particularly endearing and the only thing left after that is the Antarctic expedition, which certainly isn't enough on it's own to be worthwhile.

[–]benoxxxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I certainly don't feel the same way but fair enough!

I don't mean to imply that SOL is the issue, just that for me personally I sometimes need to be in the right mindset to see the value in them. And I don't mean SOL in general, I mean each individual show.

[–]GYUZhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/YumeNoMonogatari 74 points75 points  (19 children)

It's probably because of my innate cynicism but I feel like I wasn't able to enjoy this anime to its fullest. I liked it a lot and for a story about trying to do something with your life it was really damn good. However, despite having a topic that hits really close to home, at times I felt like it tried to shove its themes and lessons down our throats a little bit too hard.
This is why I say that my innate cynicism didn't allow me to like this anime as much, because to me the story felt too positive all the time and the youthful themes started to become grating.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that Sora Yori is a great story but I'm not a fan of the way it tried to deliver it's messages. I... just need to say it. To anyone still reading my comment that hasn't watched this anime, know that I still highly recommend it.

Spoilery PS:

[–]_qoaleth 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Your point about the cynic in you driving some of it is probably on point given the show. Reading the Director interview that was posted on here a few days ago she talked about how the kind of bond that the girls form is admittedly a bit unrealistic (specifically she said: "Such a trait [their complete trust of one another] is rare for the normal high school girl, but it is something the girls naturally build up"). Combine that with so many moments of the adults being readily "inspired" by the girls and you could feel like it was all being forced. Nevertheless, I think if you want the best out of things, you can find it - and this show really capitalized on that fact.

[–]GYUZhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/YumeNoMonogatari 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually didn't have time to read that interview and completely forgot it. I guess I'll give it a read now, maybe it'll open my eyes to certain things.
And yeah, that is a good point.

[–]Xarkhan 7 points8 points  (11 children)

Would watching this make me feel like I wasted my life because I never went on a crazy adventure and played it too safe?

[–]redrice12 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Yes

[–]Xarkhan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Probably not the thing I'm gonna want to watch right now, thanks for the heads up.

[–]eetsumkaushttps://myanimelist.net/profile/kausdc 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yes and no. its point isn't that you should live your youth to the fullest, but that it's never too late to feel young again.

[–]curtcolt95https://myanimelist.net/profile/curtcolt 7 points8 points  (2 children)

The adventure they go on is pretty unrealistic for any person let alone highschooler so as long as you don't take it too seriously you should be fine.

[–]Joll19https://myanimelist.net/profile/Joll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ehh, you can do Antarctica tours for just upwards of $10.000 as a random nobody.

That probably doesn't include the dangerous inland expeditions that they did though.

[–]Ritchuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might get you depressed but then motivate to do something afterwards.

[–]Joll19https://myanimelist.net/profile/Joll 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Watch this to hopefully feel better and/or more motivated.

[–]Caspushttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Caspus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The show definitely leaned a bit hard into just how good these kids were for each other, and how much the trip and their friendship helped them grow, to a point where I can see where you're coming from.

And per Geoff's point, the episode structure itself got formulaic to a degree that I could anticipate beats before they happened, which tended to dull some of the impact of certain beats.

But then, when the show has its high marks (your spoiler included), it really hits them out of the park. Some of the strongest individual scenes in a show I've seen in a long time.

[–]curtcolt95https://myanimelist.net/profile/curtcolt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still enjoyed the show quite a bit but it felt super cheesy to me at times. Felt like they were just looking for opportunities to throw some new motivational quote at me as the characters go through yet another slightly unrealistic problem. That being said it was a good type of cheesy in that it was still pretty fun to watch, I just definitely wouldn't put it in my top shows.

[–]SirPrizehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/magicswordz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Only watched about 4 minutes because it goes into spoilers I'm told, and apparently I need to watch this.

To me this was the sleeper hit of the season at the very least. Talking to friends, I heard a lot of fun discussion about about other shows, Yuru Camp being super comfy and great, and all that. But suddenly near the end of the season some were talking about this show and how great it is. It ended up getting their number one of the season as well.

So (after I get back from trip) def going to pick this up.

[–]RoronoaAshokhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RoronoaAshok 48 points49 points  (8 children)

Something that has bothered me for weeks is how people would refer to SoraYori as a CGDCT-show. There's nothing wrong with being a CGDCT-show, but I've always felt like SoraYori was something more. Try as I might, I couldn't find a way to put into words why it bothered me so much, but here Mother's Basement helps me out. It's not unfair to say SoraYori is a moe-style anime, but I think an emphasis has to be put on the word style. Looks can be deceiving, and if SoraYori's look turns people away, I sincerely hope they are somehow made to reconsider.

[–]xStarfyre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

what bothers me more is people calling it a SOL show. i mean this is the exact opposite of that. SOL is about mundane everyday life. going to school, going to work ect. 4 teenage girls going to Antarctica is nothing out of the ordinary, for them it is a big risk that turns their lives upside down. i guess you could argue that this is a slice of life as a member of a expedition, but this show is still more of a drama/adventure then SOL.

[–]MetaThPr4hhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h 23 points24 points  (5 children)

is how people would refer to SoraYori as a CGDCT-show.

Because it is, the characters have their personal drama and everything but the full female main cast and their interactions during the adventure are something I would expect from the cute girls genre.

Calling SoraYori to not be one would like saying that New Game S2 stopped being a cute girls anime because it had some work-related drama together with the cute interactions that the series always had.

[–]yumcake 37 points38 points  (3 children)

I think the distinction being drawn stems from the show's focus. Sora Yori's focus is centered on the story rather than on how cute they are, or cute things they do.

If Sora Yori was drawn in a realistic rather than a moe fashion, it's primary strengths would still remain. For a CGDCT show, if it's drawn in a realistic fashion instead, it's primary selling point is undermined.

[–]MetaThPr4hhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I get what you try to say but I don't think it sounds like a good example, like, what would exactly be that "more realistic" character designs for an adventure of four high schoolers? And replacing the cute interactions that they constantly do outside of the drama scenes would make for a really different series.

[–]yumcake 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I mean more realistic as in drawn for realism rather than having them stylized to highlight a certain kind of appeal. Maybe a better example would be making a live-action version of the show. Sora Yori's story would still carry through if the highschool girls are represented with actual highschool girls rather than a distilled abstraction of cute properties. The cuteness isn't primary theme or primary selling point for the show.

Those same character interactions would still be functional for defining characters and their interactions when performed in live-action, it might not be as cute, but the interactions would still serve their function as storytelling tools for each character's personality, and would allow the overarching themes to remain intact.

It's not just that calling Sora Yori CGDCT is excessively reductive, the bigger issue is that defining it as such would be reducing it to something that isn't even the primary selling point of the show.

[–]MetaThPr4hhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/MetaThPr4h 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe a better example would be making a live-action version of the show.

That's something I didn't think about, you have a good point.

[–]RoronoaAshokhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RoronoaAshok 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found out my problem is with my definition of CGDCT. I associate CGDCT with "moeblob" shows. Pause. This opens up for a difference in definition of moeblob. I'm really making this hard for everyone. Anyways, I've grown accustomed to grouping CGDCT with the drama-free moeblob shows, and I understand that isn't the norm, and that's why it bothers me, because of my definition is wonky. Maybe SoraYori is a CGDCT show. It's just not a moeblob show. No-one ever said it was a moeblob show anyways, so I'm debating someone who doesn't exist.

[–]jkubedhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/jkubed 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Cute Girls Doing Amazing Things is a genre I want to become a big thing so bad.

[–]xStarfyre 37 points38 points  (8 children)

Geoff is right, you do yourself a disservice if you don't even give this show a chance. i started it just to laugh at it, i thought the synopsis was hideous, that there should be no way this moe cash grab is anything other then a cringe fest that makes you roll your eyes.

boy was i wrong. this is a bautiful "coming of age" drama that takes itself and its characters seriously. they fight, they scream at each other, they curse at those who wrong them and so on. a show that takes you along the journey and leaves you with a better state of mind at the end.

[–]JamClichehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/JamCliche 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I'm so glad I got to experience this as it aired. I've gone back and watched a few of the earlier episodes just to see if they could have the same impact now that I've finished it.

I couldn't complete those episodes, however, because some fuck starting cutting onions in my room.

This show is one of my 10s and I knew it before the halfway point. Every episode just kept reminding me. Tuesday was my favorite day of the week this season.

[–]Arachnophobic-https://anilist.co/user/Arachnophobic 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I watched the first couple of episodes with a friend today and had to mentally steel myself minute after minute because so many friggin' scenes hit me hard to the point of making me want to cry.

Sora Yori

Sora Yori Ep 1

[–]JamClichehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/JamCliche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yo the end of episode 1 already set me off to begin with. The next 12 episodes were a continuation of a message I was already committed to.

[–]SuuLoliForm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geoff is right, you do yourself a disservice if you don't even give this show a chance

Eh, i can say that about a lot of my favorite series, one of them being under appreciated a lot (Imouto Sae was by far the most genuinely great series i've seen in awhile)

[–]Pieecake 19 points20 points  (1 child)

You're assuming I haven't already obsessed over it all week

[–]DeChawn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ha! I was obsessed over it all season. Try to get on my level newb

[–]al3xtremo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

By far one of the best I've seen in a while. I'm going to hate to see it go.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (6 children)

yes. Yes. YES. YES!

I don't think any anime this year will top this for me. This really hit home with me on so many levels, as someone who's been trying to go places, make friends, impress, break free of convention, and make something meaningful of my life for all my whole damn life. Nearly all of the characters in this damn fine show had some point of relation that I could directly draw comparisons to from my own life. Did I mention that it was a damn fine show? Everything else Geoff said in his video in regards to the technical achievements absolutely applies.

I do not think there will be any anime this season or next or after that will make connect to me as much as this did while ALSO being such an absolute triumph in storytelling, and if there is, well, I will want to know about it.

Whatever Ishizuka does next, that's definitely an automatic watch. Also, it's great to see I'm not the only one who went comparing her to Edgar Wright. He's one of my all time favorite directors too.

[–]CakeBoss16 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Ha jokes on him! I have already watched and loved it. But honestly this show is a modern classic imo.

[–]krfz41https://anilist.co/user/krfz41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did and it does deliver this sentiment of using your youth before it's too late. I did feel that some crying moments got a but too carried away but it was a great slice of life meets drama show.

[–]mishugashu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished this show... wow, was not expecting it to be that good. And the ending was pretty stellar, as well.

[–]Witnhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Quoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What stood out for me is that the pacing and sense of progression in this show was perfect, no fillers at all, every episode pushed the story forward without any rushing.

[–]robotwarsdiegohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/robotwarsdiego 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's pretty fucking great. Very few anime are able to make me almost tear up. That email scene though... God. Damn.

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (24 children)

Man, I feel so alone here lol. I got 6 episodes in and found it boring.

But with all this praise going around I should probably force myself to finish it.

[–]AbidingTruthhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/AbidingTruth 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Forcing yourself to finish something doesn't make sense for a show like this. It's an adventure that relies completely on its characters. If you don't like the characters, their motivations/backstories, or their interactions by episode 6, then the rest of the show likely won't improve for you. Any drama or sad moment later on will be moot since you don't care about the characters

[–]Tdotitan 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Yeah this show isn't one of the "push through and eventually you will like it" anime/starts slow animes, if you didn't like the first 6 episodes you probably shouldn't watch it as it would be a waste of time/you wouldn't enjoy it

I mean not to be too controversial, but in a similar story, ididn't like made in abyss. And that show was hyped to all hell, and is all like "AOTY/Really good"

I tried watching 2 episodes, and while I liked the music, I thought the the girl was insanely stupid, and I just didn't care about her. I thought reg was ok, but I just though the girl was straight dumb. And throughout the series she acted stupid, and made things needlessly dangerous, when she didn't need to, so that ruined it alot.

I was interested in the world but I wanted to see what abilities/gadgets they would get, and they described like 2 or 3 gadgets in the show. The last episode I thought was good, and the "side characters" of the last few episodes I cared for more than the main cast,

and if I had to recommend it to someone I would say "start at episode 13, and then don't watch anything else" because I did like that part tho

I guess it's obvious, and it doesn't really need saying, but if you don't like a show "the show gets better" is not a good excuse to keep watching a show, the show is who has to get you to watch it....except for some shows which may get better later I guess???

TLDR:don't worry about it,watch something else

[–]Riyonak 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Huh it's interesting to see how the same things can effect people differently. I also disliked the MC, though it does seem like the show wants you to dislike her as a naive idiot who doesn't know what she's doing. She's even hidden from Namachis dark past since only Reg has to really deal with it, which lets her keep most of her naivety. However, I felt like the rest of the show with it's music, world building, and characters more than made up for get and created a wonderful show.

[–]DirtyDiamondsZ 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I feel the same way. Am I missing something?

[–]ShadowthecatXD 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No, it's normal to not like everything.

[–]5teve7https://anilist.co/user/5teve7 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some things just aren't for everyone, it happens. There's always going to be show that click for others, but not yourself- just gotta focus on what you do like is all.

[–]Don_Camillo005 18 points19 points  (7 children)

no you shouldnt force yourself. this sub is just biased when it comes to moe.

[–]killerkalebhttps://anilist.co/user/TheLewdOtaku 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lol, you aren’t wrong

[–]Qwertyguyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/qwerty192 10 points11 points  (5 children)

It's also, apparently, in denial.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

It's funny how this sub praises Moe for the same shit every season, but any other genre (see isekai) gets shat on for being too saturated.

[–]Xtermix 1 point2 points  (1 child)

whats isekai? i probably would try watching this show if it wasnt for the moe stuff, cant stand it.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transported into another world from ours.

[–]GobtheCyberPunkhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/JigsawStitches 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Maybe because "moe" is literally not a genre. If anything it's a thematic motif.

In no other medium would you group together completely different series with completely different aims and tones and call it a "genre" because the subjects happen to share personal characteristics. It makes zero sense.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like you say Isekai is also not really a genre. But I chose that word to help make my point.

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should probably force myself to finish it.

Don't. The show isn't for everyone and you might just end up hating it instead of just finding it boring if you try to force yourself. Maybe give it a second try in the future.

[–]elctrcboogaloo3https://myanimelist.net/profile/elctrcboogaloo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a kind of similar boat as it was airing. I had to kind of force myself to start each weeks' episode because I felt like it would be boring, or like it would just start to drag the further on I watched. It really picked up for me once they finally got on the boat, though, and now it's become one of my favorite series.

Although I will add that I still felt like I was at least a bit invested and interested, rather than bored, at the end of each episode, even the early ones. So your experience could be totally different from mine, but I'd still say it's at least worth a shot!

[–]Malorn44https://myanimelist.net/profile/Malorn44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, it is a very very good show

[–]riceto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great review, I think you were spot on with your point about the structure of each episode being more or less the same. Even when I know the emotional insert song moment is coming at the end of the every episode I still end up tearing up. The themes of the show are nothing new but it's all executed so well.

I really enjoyed SoraYori so I'm glad it's getting so much recognition here. It's pretty crazy that it went up to 8.61 on MAL but it's definitely well deserved IMO.

[–]devenbathttps://myanimelist.net/profile/HeroOfLime[🍰] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't cry when watching anime but this show didn't actually change anything about that. I still enjoyed it though. Just finished last night

[–]WoodpeckerNo1https://anilist.co/user/Nishi23 3 points4 points  (4 children)

TL;DW? Why should I watch it?

[–]ilkei 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Great adventure series with strong characters, a good story, and an excellent OST. Among other praiseworthy aspects.

[–]HarleyFox92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Somehow this went from "Ok, let's give a try, it seems midly interesting" passing by "OMFG, it's been years since I saw something this good" to "This goes straight into my Top 5 of all times!". Definitely overpassed every single expectation I had, animation, writing, OST, character development, balance between comedy and drama, etc., and even made my cry! The first time I ever cried watching anime! That episode 12, holy shit Madhouse.

Sora Yori, you've earned my award to the AOTS and I know we're just almost in April but, it's gonna be hard for some other anime to claim the AOTY above you.

[–]TheRisingTide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it is a pretty fucking awesome show.

[–]ihunt0 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I just started it yesterday. I noticed by episode 3 the voice of the main girl Mari is the same as Rem from Re:Zero. Makes it that much better.

[–]Nitrosnipe22https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nitrosnipe 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is the one sole time I would say that just having Minase Inori voice her doesn't give Kimari best girl status.

[–]mattsk8n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a better reviewer than I thought it would be.

[–]Araragi_san 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aots for me.

[–]Shroud_Angel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just binged watched. Its official. Added to my favorites list. Up there with Your lie in April.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watched it. Loved it.

[–]TheLastOne0001 2 points3 points  (3 children)

im just not that into moe

[–]CrashDunninghttps://myanimelist.net/profile/CrashD 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It only has a moe art style. The show itself, its story, and its structure is anything but.

[–]Modern_Erasmus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, I binge watched the show after I saw this vid and it was absolutely incredible. I tend to hate cutesy no-plot shows so I was leery of getting into this, but like you said it’s not that kind of show at all really. It’s a very powerful and intelligently written drama adventure. It even bucked a lot of the negative trends I’ve become used to in this industry, like characters being too archetypal and conversational dialogue feeling un genuine and forced. This was just a damn great story with a hell of a premise, and the great directing and music is just the bow on top. Definite 10/10 for me, even got me thinking about some life decisions I’ve been considering.

[–]Bluespade 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alright alright I'll try it. Writing Excuses recently helped me realize that I crave adventure stories anyway. I've got Princess Principal to finish then I'll give this one a try. Hopefully it's not too moe.

[–]Peatiesthttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Peatiest 4 points5 points  (3 children)

The silence had become deafening to my ears from the larger anitubers regarding this series. Either they don't have their fingers on the pulse, or as a large number of us who watched agree, believe it is something special, and believe the whole story was worth waiting for and doing justice to.

Thanks you for this review, and for helping push great series like this to the larger community.

Easily AOTS for me, and given previous experience probably a good shot for AOTY.

[–]Balmong7https://myanimelist.net/profile/Balmong7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dammit Mr. Anime Pope, I just haven't had time yet. Your OP analysis has been on my watch later list for months until I can actually know what you are talking about.

[–]wuju420 4 points5 points  (7 children)

can u give me a short sum up of the story (non spoily)? then i might consider it :)

[–]G-0ff[S] 34 points35 points  (5 children)

upon realizing she's wasted her high school years, a girl makes an impulsive decision to go on an adventure of some kind. that adventure takes shape when she meets another girl with dedicated long-term plan to go to antarctica. Two other girls join them, each seeking to fill a void in their lives through the journey, and through their adventure they become lifelong friends.

[–]Orzislawhttps://anilist.co/user/Orzi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would add Shirase reason to go to antarctica (to find her missing mother, polar researcher), but other than that pretty spot-on!

[–]wuju420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i guess the story is TOO relateable fml :'(

[–]LegitPancak3https://myanimelist.net/profile/LegitPancake 3 points4 points  (1 child)

With all the stinkers Funimation decided to simuldub this season, it really is a shame they didn't decide to do this one and Laid-Back Camp instead. Maybe they'll end up doing them for the home video.

[–]dooblagras 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might have been a blessing in disguise if anything. I'd want it to have as much polish it could get. I doubt it would have had a goofy dub, but I definitely want the English script to have an extra go over compared to other shows.

[–]ClearandSweethttps://kitsu.io/users/clearandsweet 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh wow I'm so glad the show's getting more attention. Just like Geoff, this show came out of nowhere and ended up on my favorites of all time list. I would also be amazed if anything can come close to it this year.

It's exactly what I look for in a story: believable characters that are forced by the plot and situations to make difficult choices and consider their own values. And the way the girls consistently build up and play off each other was such a sublime way of affirming the value of friendship.

If you liked this, I did a short video about yet one more aspect of A Place Further than the Universe's writing that is so far above and beyond what we see in anime nowadays.

[–]Smartjedihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smartjedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have nearly as high praise for the series as you did, but this was a very good video. I didn't pick up how episode 11's climax tied into the adults' conflict as well. Nice job laying all that out.

[–]Catssonova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legit squeezed some tears out in like 4 episodes. So well done

[–]stjensen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep hearing about this and laid back camp so I guess I gotta watch them now.

[–]CALF0219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was refreshing to see this from MadHouse

[–]OhMilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the show, but just saw some clips that were here on the front page. I literally felt more emotion watching these girls run away from people for like 2 minutes than I did from the actual shows I'm watching this season. Crazy how music can elevate scenes so much.

[–]ednicehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/3dward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to rewatch it dubbed

[–]anNPC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No u

[–]RyuuGP 1 point2 points  (1 child)

HisoMaso is the only upcoming anime that the PV is shown in this video. You really are anticipating this show, G-Off?

[–]G-0ff[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bones original. Almost certainly gonna be great

[–]Fresh_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man that episode 12. All I'm saying. So worth it.

[–]Iknowuthrice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my gem of the season.

[–]Darkionx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not into Slice of Life cause make me depressed about my lack of interesting events in my life, its the combination of socialy awkward, a family that never lets me free time, and my lazyness.

[–]42DontPanic42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I could enjoy it, but I just can't get through that helmet-style hair that everyone seems to have

[–]VulcanAndroid1701https://anilist.co/user/VulcanAndroid1701 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I have only watched the first episode. I really did not like it and it didn't seem like it was going in an interesting direction. A lot of the people here seem to have liked it from the start. Does it get significantly better than the first episode?

Edit: Also, I found the first two characters to be very uninteresting. Are the other two better?

[–]hansantizorhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/hansantizor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn't really care for the first episode either. The other two characters are definitely more likeable imo. I'd give it a shot until episode 3 when the last one is introduced to see if you like them at least. Fwiw i'm currently on episode 6 and other than the initial main character (who kinda sucks) the others have been pretty good so far.

[–]BloodyLlama 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I dropped it after episode 5 and I thought it pretty much maintained the same tone through those episodes. My opinion seems to be unpopular here, but in my opinion if you didn't like the first episode it's not going to change much.

[–]Argosy37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't really care for the first episode and I found both main characters annoying (which is odd, as this should be my genre). I guess it's just not for me.

[–]GobtheCyberPunkhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/JigsawStitches 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shirase in particular develops a lot over the course of the series, but the slight fan favorite is Hinata, the girl with the bun, which although I like Shirase more I can still understand it.

Also while I really enjoyed the first half of the series or so, I think I'll buck the trend by saying that after that point is when the series really takes off. There's some really great scenes and moments in the first half but the second half is just a whole other level.

[–]thetrooper007https://myanimelist.net/profile/thetrooper007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the first episode much and I ended up liking it quite a bit.

[–]arjzer 2 points3 points  (3 children)

when did this anime come out?

Edit: sees Produced by studio Madhouse HMM checks definitely will watch

[–]kou2kun 5 points6 points  (2 children)

It just finished airing. AotS and definitely a contender for AotY. Just go watch it already.

[–]Axxhelairon 4 points5 points  (1 child)

i'll be sure to take the words of Geoff "Mothers Basement" "Re:Creators is an instant classic" Thew into full hearted consideration

just him recommending the show gives me second thoughts about trying it tbh

[–]VeryWeirdPerson 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Does it get better after the first 3 episodes?

[–]Mad4Cereal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Putting 'need' in all-caps instantly makes me not want to watch it

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Y tho

[–]Finnspitfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to like mother's basement a lot but Its come to a point were him liking something only makes me like it less

[–]Kirito-x-Asuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate mother’s basement. He is just rude.

[–]Don_Camillo005 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

hands down the best

nope

[–]Shroud_Angel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive heard good things about it, im going to binge it now on my day off. Ep 4.

[–]g_squidman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"best moe style show..." anime these days.... Hey don't forget Godzilla :D
