Is there a reason you can’t watch Fosse’s movie All That Jazz (1979) anywhere? No streaming, no purchasing

Is there a reason you can’t watch Fosse’s movie All That Jazz (1979) anywhere? No streaming, no purchasing

I was rewatching Fosse/Verdon (incredible, just as good as it was the first time) and it made me want to watch All The Jazz again. However, I discovered that there is no way to watch it online! It isn’t on any streaming service, and it isn’t even available to purchase on Amazon or anything. There’s no way to watch it at all, free or paid.

Yes, it’s an older movie, but it isn’t obscure. It won the Palm D’Or at Cannes! It was nominated for like 9 Oscar’s, it won a couple, and a major miniseries featured it heavily a few years ago. It’s bizarre to not be able to watch it anywhere at all.

Does anybody know why it’s been like, scrubbed from digital media? Is there a reason??

Thoughts on All That Jazz (1979)?

For myself, I haven't been as blown away by a movie in a very long time. Fully worthy of the four Oscars it received, as well as its nine total nominations. 1979 had to be one of the strongest years in film history, at least in the English-speaking world --- Alien, Apocalypse Now, Being There, Manhattan, Breaking Away, The Kids Are Alright, Quadrophenia, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Mad Max, My Brilliant Career -- and All That Jazz is up there with any of them.

Do you agree with the common (to the point of being cliched) criticism that the film is 'self-indulgent?'

MovieModsRecommend - All That Jazz

We mods are in this subreddit daily and know the users feel like the same movies are talked about way too often. The most popular movies on Reddit are certainly some great ones, but every week we're going to recommend what we think are good movies and aren't discussed much in this subreddit. These recommendations aren't all pretentious film school meditations on human verisimilitude, we swear they're watchable :)

January 9, 2021 is All That Jazz - 1979.

Earlier today I saw a Reddit post related to the oft-repeated question about how bad movies get made - like why can't they tell the script is bad? All That Jazz is probably the opposite to that question. I can't imagine the pitch meeting, it must've been bonkers. Bob Fosse, a very famous musical choreographer in New York City and Oscar-winning director of Cabaret, wanted to write and direct an autobiographical movie that included an entire subplot of Fosse hanging out in the palace of his own mind. On paper it looks nuts, but they trusted in Fosse to somehow make it all work, and sweet lord horus he did. After Stanley Kubrick saw All That Jazz in 1979 he reportedly called it the best movie he'd ever seen. It won the Palme d'Or at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival.

As for trailers, eeesh. This is probably the best because all of the official trailers make it look like it's a musical. While it has musical numbers performed in the movie on stage diegetically, it's not like Moulin Rouge or Chicago. They don't sing dialogue to each other.

This is the first 6 minutes of the movie. That YouTube clip is abruptly cut though, the opening is about a 10 minute montage of the Broadway audition/hiring process, then we get into the story.

The movie is absolutely manic and amazing. I don't want to say anything about the plot because half the fun is just being surprised, imo, but the movie goes a lot of places emotionally and even gives you some insight into what it was like when Fosse was editing the Lenny Bruce movie Lenny.

As for where you can watch it online, I admit I didn't check before writing this all out and.... no idea. You can pretend it's about 2013 and you're still renting BluRays through the mail here, or you can buy it off Amazon, or... concentrate really hard and wish it to manifest. Easily one of the most frustrating things in the information age is to have money and want to buy something but it's unavailable easily. I don't even see it on the damn Criterion Channel. If anyone does find it somewhere legally, please let me know.

Backstory for an element in the movie: the movie that is being edited by the main guy, Joe Gideon, in the storyline of All That Jazz is based on Lenny, the movie about Lenny Bruce that Fosse directed a few years prior. A lot of you saw The Trial of the Chicago 7 and saw Sasha Baron Cohen play Abbie Hoffman doing comedy in small clubs. The comedy was basically a sort of fireside chat with these politically motivate comedians, not so much rehearsed material. Lenny Bruce was a legend of that kind of thing, predating Richard Pryor, Bill Hicks, and even George Carlin.

Please use spoiler tags in the discussion below, as this is a recommendation thread for people who haven't seen the movie yet. If you have a suggestion for a future recommendation, please post here with it!

"All That Jazz" (1979) is a singular accomplishment in autobiographies [Spoilers]
false

(This does include spoilers, but All That Jazz isn't the kind of movie where you worry about spoilers)

Bob Fosse, an American icon in theater, wrote, choreographed, and directed All That Jazz

The movie covers the character of Joe Gideon pushing himself to the edge trying to produce a musical and edit a movie simultaneously, to the point where he has a heart attack.

Bob Fosse wrote the story based on his experience having a heart attack while trying to produce Chicago for stage and edit Lenny for the screen.

Yes, All That Jazz is essentially Bob Fosse's autobiography.

Ann Reinking plays Kate Jagger, Joe Gideon's lover, in the movie. Ann Reinking was Bob Fosse's lover and frequent collaborator, and basically played herself in the film. (Fosse made her audition three times to play herself)

Early on there's a scene where Kate Jagger comes home early to find Joe Gideon in bed with a dancer he was auditioning. This means that on the set, Bob Fosse was directing his lover playing herself finding him in bed with another woman - a scene which almost certainly happened in real life.

Bob Fosse survived his heart attack, while in the movie Joe Gideon refuses to slow down and suffers a second attack, which kills him.

Eight years later, Bob Fosse died of a heart attack while directing a play, making All That Jazz one of the few, if not the only, autobiography in history where the author included his own death.

Bonus Detail: Bob Fosse's daughter has a cameo

All That Jazz (1979) starring Roy Scheider and Jessica Lange blew me away

This weekend I watched All That Jazz starring Roy Scheider and Jessica Lange. I could not have been more impressed or entertained, it is a really amazing film with a great cast. It is both a comedic and touching representation of the life of an entertainer who clawed his way to the top of the heap.

The movie opens with Scheider doing his morning routine including popping some Dexedrine pills and then rolls into an impressive scene of dancers trying out for a show to the tune of On Broadway. Throughout the film, the main character struggles with his addictions and desire to always put on the best show for his audience.

The movie left me feeling a debt of gratitude to those who entertain me. I really do appreciate them even more after watching this film. Hope you'll check it out.

If you know me on here, I regularly am recommending All That Jazz to people as it’s one of my all time favorites. Wanted to share two photos I recently received in the mail. If I could only get a Scheider and Fosse.

All That Jazz (1979) is one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Not to sound hyperbolic but I literally have no flaws with it. Roy Scheider gives one of the best performances I have ever seen in a movie. His acting as this self-destructive addict is Oscar-worthy, authentic and never overacting. Everything feels real.

The editing is so good and has a whole rhythm to it, the 2 hours fly by. The movie was also unexpectedly hilarious at times, particularly the montage in the hospital where he keeps grabbing the nurse. Yet it also shifts tone from hilarity to sincerity, to heartbreak, and back again in a matter of seconds.

Also that ending. He was about to die, and gave a celebratory farewell piece. The topic itself is depressing but the music accompanying it is catchy. Maybe this is also his character? He covers up his problems with catchy jazz to distract from the bad?

It's a brilliant movie, probably my new favorite musical, really recommend seeing it.
