  • r/ShinyPokemon - [Gen 2] stumbled upon a shiny ditto by mistake trying to hatch a shiny pineco via my shiny Ariados. I still can't believe it. My future egg hunts just got a lot easier.

The craziest thing about Spidops is that we already had a starter bug spider with shit stats, particularly rotten speed, and a signature move that lowers speed but not by nearly enough to outspeed most threats. But if two mons fit that description now, let's give em an ability as convoluted as fellow spider Araquanid's Water Bubble!

Web Ambush: When an opposing Pokémon's speed is lowered, it can no longer switch out and has 1/8th of its max HP drained at the end of each turn. Your next move after an opponent's speed is lowered has priority.

Water Bubble gives Fire resistance AND burn immunity AND a Water move boost, so Web Ambush also does three great things. Between Toxic Thread (uncut from the game), Silk Trap, Sticky Web, or even String Shot, opponents become ensnared and Ariados/Spidops can move in for the kill, draining their life force and becoming more agile as they spring into action.

While trapping and Leech Seeding in one move is nuts, especially given the priority that follows, these measly bugs have to survive a hit in the first place to set up. I toyed with giving them speed boosting in this scenario, but that'd be actually broken as they could Sub/Protect/String Shot (sub in other moves to taste) and become SubSeed nightmares if they get too fast; instead, they're still nightmares, but only against the mon they've currently trapped, and as soon as that mon is gone you're more often than not back to square one (give or take Sticky Web in the fourth slot messing with grounded mons without boots trying to switch in).

What do y'all think? What alternate effects could occur when an opponent's speed is lowered (because I think that's the funnest and most flavorful concept)? What fully different ways would y'all improve these spiders?
