YouTube banned me for using AdBlock

Title kinda says it all. It suddenly went from "are not allowed" to "you have three videos until we ban you". So, that sounded way more severe and i figured it's best to actually disable them. Turns out, I have quite a bunch of them installed (some YouTube nice-to-haves (i.e., better hotkeys, ban shorts etc) also have baked-in adblockers) and I actually did not find them all before my 3 videos were used up. Now, my player is blocked and I'm pondering what workarounds have been found until this point.

I used to be a student and hence not capable of paying 13€ for premium each month, but since I'm a working adult at this stage, I've been contemplating getting premium for a while now. However, now, I feel like they are forcing my hands and therefore I really don't want to give in.

Edit1: typos

Edit2: thank you all for your Input. I think it's solved for now. Also, I wanna apologize for sounding a little too alarmist in the post.

No AdBlock...? Well, no YouTube

Been using YouTube for like 13 or 14 years now, but its time has come to an end. I am just flabbergasted that they are not allowing AdBlocks anymore while simultaneously pushing up to 3ads with 20seconds each without the ability to skip...?

Also apparently, even people that buy YouTube "premium" are still getting Ads... I am sorry, but this is just pure force to get money. I was debating on purchasing Premium few months ago, but now I am definetly not going to do that. And in my opinion, absolutely no one in their right mind should do that! Let YouTube see what grievous mistake they have made and what's more worth it for them: To have people watch with AdBlock or to not use their platform at all...

How To Get Rid Of The Youtube Ad Block Popup

Turns out if you have Youtube Enhancer with the ad block option on (default behavior) it will override uBlock Origin which makes the remove adblocker message pop up. Likewise, other ad blockers make the message pop up so disable them too.

However, there are some exceptions. Sometimes uBlock Origin stops updating on an individual's computer for whatever reason, so you have to manually update to the newest version of the plugin, and refresh lists by going into the settings, click Filter Lists -> Purge All Caches -> Update Now. Then restart the browser.

A lot of people in the last 24 hours were getting the youtube ad block message even with uBlock Origin on because youtube switched its popup source code, uBlock Origin updated to address it within an hour, but the program can take days to update sources, which is where the manual refresh instructions help.

If you're still having trouble you can report your issue to the devs directly here: https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uAssets/issues/19976 Devs tend to respond within the hour fixing the issue. (If you're reading this from the future find the most up to date youtube thread on r/uBlockOrigin or on github.)

Enjoy!

edit: Here's a few more things that can help.

  1. If Youtube is still hassling you on uBlock Origin even after refreshing lists and rebooting the browser, remember to write to the devs! They can't fix it if you don't.

  2. While waiting for the devs you can enable uBlock in incognito / private browsing, then right mouse click on the video and play using an incognito window, which bypasses the ad blocking and the anti ad blocking message. Normal browsing works.

  3. If the devs don't get back to you and a day has passed with issues and you're getting tired of right mouse clicking, this Tampermonkey script is guaranteed to work because it is undetectable by Youtube: https://github.com/TheRealJoelmatic/RemoveAdblockThing

(Alternative Tampermonkey script that doesn't work as well: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/386925-youtube-ad-cleaner-include-non-skippable-ads-works)

Once you've installed the script you'll have to disable all adblockers on youtube.com (Click the big power button logo on uBlock when on youtube.com which will turn it off for just youtube.com.) This will get rid of the youtube anti adblocker messages and you'll be able to continue watching without issue.

But please! Report to the devs first!!

3 easy ways to bypass the YouTube AdBlock ban

My dinner video session got interrupted, so I'll let out my frustrations by showing how easy it is to bypass this stupid thing:

  • Use Brave browser

    • Brave's built-in AdBlock doesn't get detected or flagged by YouTube the same way extension based blockers do, so the "AdBlockers violate YouTube's TOS" popup never shows up.

  • Use fadblock

    • This is a chrome extension (so it works in most browsers), which skips YouTube ads, but because it actually loads them for a split second, it doesn't get flagged by YouTube.

  • Open the video in the Incognito Mode

    • If your player get's blocked after 3 strikes, you can still just copy the URL, open it in the incognito tab and the video will play. Make sure to enable your AdBlock to run in Incognito.

As a side note I'd like to add that even if YouTube patches all of these, I'm just going to buy a Raspberry Pi and set up Pi-hole to intercept all the ads in my network, rather than pay for Premium.

Let me know if this was useful for you, if I'll see enough interest I'll post a guide to getting all the YouTube Premium features on mobile with basic browser extensions.

Stay Based fellas.

MOD
MEGATHREAD: Ad Blockers are now Blocked on Youtube

Hey everyone, It has been a very eventful past couple weeks as the new initiative from YouTube has rolled out to wider and wider audiences globally. This new change has instituted blocking people from using ad blockers on most browsers.

We have freely allowed discussion of this topic to be posted all over the sub for a couple weeks now, and it has reached the home page f many hundreds of thousands of reddit users. At this point, there is not much else that can be said ,and the community has resorted to mostly beating a dead horse and making jokes. This is fine, however there are some downsides that have come from this.

New topics aren't allowed to emerge or be discussed since this has overshadowed everything, and also posts asking for assistance or help have been drown out.

Starting right now, I will Lock all existing posts about the AdBlock topic. We will be removing any new posts about the ad blocking topic. All other posts are allowed as long as they follow the general rules.

This thread is the only place going forward (until it is no longer stickied) where you can discuss the topic. We will also continue to remove any comments of people being toxic or rude toward each other in the comments. please stay civil.

Reminder: This Subreddit is not Owned, Operated, Controlled, or ran in participation with YouTube or google. The mods are all volunteers. It never has been in YouTube's control, and never will be. You are free to criticize YouTube, just don't target or threaten individual people. Keep your comments about the organization itself. Death threats will be removed, banned, and reported.
Reminder 2: We are removing comments from people that are spamming links to alt websites and random extensions. A lot of these links are to malicious programs trying to take advantage of kids that don't know better. You can talk about these alternatives, just don't link to them.

CMV: AdBlock is not unethical, but it sucks to have to use (YouTube).

I want to support content creators. I do. But the system is stupid, and I'm not going to play along.

I'm ok with seeing ads. What I am NOT ok with is being shown misleading or dangerous advertisements that spread malware or misinformation. If YouTube wants me to watch their ads, they need to regulate them. My little brother was watching a video on his tablet today, and up popped an ad for... electromagnetically insulated beanies to protect one's head from the dangers of 5G. My brother is 8.

These ads are dangerous and are spreading misinformation to the public, including impressionable kids. What's next, anti-vax ads? Jeez. I'm getting AdBlock for everyone in my house, no regrets.

Edit 1: The problem is bigger than youtube, it's just the example I am using here because of that little anecdote. Google doesn't regulate their ads much, and they serve ads with misinformation, scams, and malware. Other companies are even worse. I believe that using AdBlock is about more than convenience, it's an important part of internet safety! Change my view :)

Youtube will never stop ad blockers.

The only way YouTube will be able to ban ad blockers permanently is via a kernel level detection similar to how anti cheats work in video games. Even with that level of access, there are still ways to get around hardware level bans.

YouTube can try as hard as they want, but unless they have something with higher privilege on your machine(phone, tablet, desktop, laptop etc.) than your browser, there's no way to truly ban ad blockers.

The web has some really bad security design and I think the way the internet was designed with the http/s protocols, it really puts the cards in the favor of the people who actively run ad block software.

I highly highly doubt this war on ad block will be at all effective, all it's doing it annoying its users which pushes us further into developing patches and bypasses to prevent ads.

When companies rolled out the "no ads" and "offline listening" features.. I thought it was pretty silly because we can already do both of those things for free... and a lot of people obviously understand that which means less money for YouTube, but is that our fault?

Google needs to figure out better ways to make money that doesn't include putting standard features like background listening behind a paywall.

How to bypass Youtube anti-ad block with Enhancer for Youtube

NOTICE: WITH THE NEW EYT UPDATE, THE ADS-MANAGEMENT FEATURES HAS BEEN REMOVED BY THE DEVELOPER TO "COMPLY WITH THE (YOUTUBE) TERMS OF SERVICE". PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT ON THIS POST ANYMORE ABOUT EYT ISSUES

3RD EditNOTICE AND DISCLAIMER: I am not posting this to promote the extension. This is for users who already have it installed. PLEASE DO NOT COMMENT HERE TO ASK FOR THE EXTENSION AS I WILL NOT PROVIDE IT HERE IN COMPLIANCE TO THIS SUBREDDIT'S RULES

IMPORTANT: DISABLE ANY OTHER ADBLOCKERS YOU HAVE OR MIGHT NOT WORK

With the new anti-adblock thing rolling out, people have been looking for ways to bypass it. Me in this case, i found one. It involves the Enhancer for Youtube extension

Step 1. Open the Enhancer for Youtube settings and find the Ads Management category. Make suree the "Block Ads" part is unchecked

Step 2. Locate the Video Player category and find the control's section. Follow the referenced image

Step 3. Close the settings tab and load a video. When loading a youtube video, an icon in the video player should be shown in the player controls thing. Similar to the referenced image below.

Step 4. Load a video and allow the ad to play for atleast 1 second before clicking the widget. It should skip the ad without setting flags

This is what you are looking for. Allow the ad to play for Atleast 1 second before clicking it. Steps 3 and 4Make sure these are checked for instant accessibility. Step 2Make sure Block Ads is disabled. Step 1

YouTube is achieving nothing by implementing anti-adblock

Let’s be real, YouTube blocking ad-blockers are only making people find new ways to block ads. I even installed a modified version of YouTube on my phone to get rid of ads. I wouldn’t mind but YouTube doesn’t do anything about scam and NSFW ads, because it brings them money, and YouTube is being really unfair with users, slowing them down for using ad-blockers and browsers not powered on Chromium.

YouTube slow with AdBlockPlus

Recently my YouTube has been running significantly slow essentially unusable at this point. Even though I am paying for YouTube premium I always run AdBlock Plus when im signed into chrome.

Upon trying to fix the issue which initially i thought it was caused from my internet despite having fast enough internet, it simply didn't make sense.

I was reading online on something about chrome developer and "Quic" and I turned it off based on the readings. It still didn't fix the issue.

Then I was doing more research and was reading on extensions being the cause and instantly what came to my mind was AdBlock Plus and how YouTube in general are trying to prevent people using any ad blockers.

So after reading that, I turned off adblock plus while signed into YouTube, and all of sudden my YouTube was responsive. No sluggish behaviour, no long waiting times, all in all was very fast.

So essentially what I am saying is that rip to those users who use ad blockers on YouTube as this was me about 10 years ago.

Hopefully there are some ad blockers that are out there that will allow ads being blocked on YT and is fully legit.
