Podcast Addict outrageous data usage

Today I got a notification from my carrier that I've used 90% of my 4gb data plan...a week after my billing cycle reset. I went into my data usage and discovered that PA has used over 2gb of background data in the past week. I've have had background data turned off, all settings to wifi only and ads set to interstitial since the day I downloaded the app 2 years ago and this has not been an issue before. Can anyone offer any insight as to what's going on here? Android OS. Now I have to pretty much go 3 weeks unable to use my phone for anything but calls/texts and I'm not to pleased about it.

Update: It seems the banner ads cycling while the app was close or the phone was in sleep mode was causing the issue. After buying the premium version, there had been no data used at all. Thanks for the responses.

Podcast Addict really is the best Android Podcast App

My subscription to Podcast Addict is up in September so lately I've been searching around other podcast apps to see what is out there and if I like them. The first one I tried was Pocketcasts, which I was familiar with from IOS, but I didn't entirely like how it looked on Android Auto. Then I tried Podcast Republic and Antennapod and for some reason even though I had it set to auto download, Antennapod didn't Auto Download. As for Podcast Republic, that was probably my next favorite but I had set the app to delete downloads after the episode was played and it didn't do that. Maybe I was doing things wrong on all three of the different apps but I found myself coming back to Podcast Addict just for it's simplicity and basic use. Maybe I'm just more familiar with it over the others, but it does everything I want it to do and it just feels really organized. I wish they had a single pay donation though, but I would pay the developer for how he can maintain it. Also, Pocketcasts needs an episode filter feature which I have found really nice, especially because I have a podcast that airs a classic episode each week and I don't need to listen to it since i've heard them all.

Am I doing things wrong on the other apps or am I just missing something. I see these android apps recommended a lot but with Antennapod and Pocketcasts, I found them kind of lacking.

Podcast Addict closing more often when not playing

Hi. I've used Podcast Addict for years now, across multiple Android phones, and love it.

Recently it's been doing a weird thing where, unless it is actively playing, it will pretty much always close itself. This means that the play controls are no longer accessible on the lock screen, or via Bluetooth, meaning I have to unlock my phone and reopen the app to resume a podcast.

This is new behavior in the last week or so. I long ago turned off battery saving for the app. Was there an update at some point (to PA or Android? Is there a setting I can tweak to change this behavior?

podcast addict on grapheneOS

has anyone tested podcast addict on grapheneOS? unfortunately podcast addict isn't on f-droid, but it's def my preferred podcast app. there's antennapod, but artwork can be wonky sometimes, plus i can't import audio like i can with podcast addict (newpipe audio dl). been building a f-droid list of apps to replace frequently used non foss apps. think i'm about 95% on f-droid now. wasn't sure to ask on degoogle or grapheneos sub.

Podcast Addict users, why do you like that app better?

I'm an Android user and new into Podcasts, I've been reading a lot of posts in this forum asking what is the best Podcast app and I've seen people recommending Podcast Addict. So instead of asking again what Podcast app is your favourite I want to know why you prefer Podcast Addict over Podcast Republic, Pocket Cast, Player FM and Overcast I think were the ones I saw mentioned more.

PSA: If you follow Heavyweight and use Podcast Addict, make sure you're subbed to the correct feed.

[Edit: I got a response from Kalila Holt on Twitter/X about this: "thanks for pointing out, mick—I think the switch back to wide has been causing some issues. I’ve been reaching out to different platforms and will reach out to PodcastAddict too, so hopefully fixed soon!"]

UPDATE: looking at Podcast Addict now, the problem seems to have been fixed.

Heavyweight is no longer a Spotify exclusive, and it's now available on all the usual podcast platforms. Lately--in the lead-up to the new season--they've been releasing last season's Spotify-exclusive episodes on those platforms. Unfortunately, I've noticed on Podcast Addict that a lot of listeners aren't currently subscribed to the correct feed. The old feed has 68.2K subscribers. The currently active feed has 730 subscribers.

The correct feed will say "Spotify Studios." The incorrect feed will say "Gimlet." If you're using the right feed, the most recent ep is S7 #51 The Elliotts. Incorrect feed: S6 #42 Mark.

Not sure if this applies to other apps, but I've noticed several PA users saying they aren't seeing the new eps. This is probably why.

Our experience with Overcast and Podcast Addict advertising

Hey guys, I wanted to share our experience with advertising on Overcast and Podcast Addict for August 2021. Hopefully this can help people with their own decisions regarding in-app ads.

For context, we run a gaming website called Goodnight Groofs that currently has 2 podcasts:

  1. GG Replay is fully centered around gaming news and comes out 3 days a week (Monday/Wednesday/Friday).

  2. Game Groofs features more in-depth gaming discussions (not necessarily news), trivia, and mini-games. It's a weekly show.

We decided to go with GG Replay for our advertising effort because we felt as though it was an easier sell (the idea of gaming news is pretty straightforward), and it already had a large backlog of episodes since it's 3 days a week (we started in mid-June).

Both ads were in the leisure category. Our Overcast ad cost $240, and our Podcast Addict ad cost $215. From what I can tell, that's about as low as you'll see in the leisure category for Overcast. We caught it at a good time, price-wise.

Expectations: Overcast tells you that you can expect somewhere around 400-600 taps and 30-35 subscriptions. Meanwhile, Podcast Addict predicts 1,000-1,500 taps and 20-70 subscriptions. Obviously these aren't guarantees, but we were very excited at the idea of even coming close to these numbers.

Here's how things broke down for us:

RESULTS | Views| Taps| Subs

  • | - | - | - Overcast | 82,255 | 609 (0.74%) | 24 (3.94%) Podcast Addict | 418,813 | 345 (0.08%) | 8 (2.32%) Total | 501,068 | 954 (0.19%) | 32 (3.35%)

We were pretty disappointed, especially with the Podcast Addict results.

With Overcast, we exceeded the expected results for taps, but were a bit short in expected subs. That's fine, I can deal with that. At least people were taking a look. I know our cover art isn't the best in the world, but I thought it was enough to catch some eyes, and I think that the tap numbers here backed that up.

With Podcast Addict, however, we fell way below the expected number of taps, and our sub count obviously suffered as well. In fact, with Podcast Addict, we were hanging around 1 or 2 subs for most of the month up until the end. It was incredibly disheartening, and felt like a total waste of money.

Would we do this again? Maybe, but it would have to be for the right price, and we'd probably only do it on Overcast. Right now, we're definitely looking into other avenues for marketing.

Please feel free to ask about anything I didn't cover in this post.

Please suggest a podcast app. Not Podcast Addict.

PA has a bug that causes other audio to play silently over Bluetooth. For instance, when I'm on a run Spotify will allow the running app to play audio alerts periodically. PA will not allow that. Same for Telegram and Whatsapp audio messages, which I get a lot of. I have to kill PA to listen to them over BT.

Dev says it's not a bug.

Anyway, paid is fine. Just looking for a solid podcast app that isn't PA.

Introducing Podcast Addict Premium

Starting with v2020.11, I'm adding a subscription option to the app called Podcast Addict Premium.

First, I want to start by saying that this won't change anything to free and paid app users.

The app will keep receiving updates and new features and paid users will keep using the app without any ad banner. The one time IAP to remove the ad banner still exists even though the price will increase a little bit.

The subscription model is added so users who want to help support the app can do so.

For the past 3 years, ad revenue has been decreasing a lot (-50%) while the app was increasing the number of users.

Now since the Covid started, the ad revenue dropped by another 50%. So this subscription is here to help make the app sustainable.

You can get more details about all this here: https://podcastaddict.com/premium
