Bitcoin is the currency of the Internet: a distributed, worldwide, decentralized digital money. Unlike traditional currencies such as dollars, bitcoins are issued and managed without any central authority whatsoever: there is no government, company, or bank in charge of Bitcoin. As such, it is more resistant to wild inflation and corrupt banks. With Bitcoin, you can be your own bank.

Yesterday the news broke of one of the biggest Crypto wallets ever being hacked and compromised, Atomic Wallet. This one likely hits very close to home as many here, including me, also had some of their assets on it thinking it would a safe choice.

Before we go towards a possible solution for all of these Wallets hacks and what I find is the best way to counter all of that uncertainty, let‘S look at the stats of this one. For that we are taking the held pf the on-chain detective ZachXBT, who has monitored the biggest losses so far.

Chart of the top 5 victims of Atomic Wallet, b ZachXBT

Here we can see the five biggest victims of this hack as of the latest update. One singular person even lost 7.96M USDT, another person lost 1875 ETH ($3.5M) and many more people lost many hundreds of thousands. The total combined losses have exceeded well above $35M, with the top 5 taking up $17M losses themselves.

Scammer putting out fake refund program

Moreover, ZachXBT has brought to attention that even during those tough times many scammers are targeting the victims with fake refund programs that will cost even more of your assets. Be really safe out there right now and only take news form the official Atomic Wallet account.

As to how we could find a solution to the many wallet hacks happening, from MyAlgo Wallet to now Atomic Wallet, for me this seems obvious: Just as we always told each other to not keep all our eggs in the same basked with our Crypto investments, the same applies for keeping you Crypto in wallet. Have multiple wallets and also hardware wallets to keep your Crypto safe and most importantly write down the seed phrase for all of them safely.

Several hours ago Bitboy's Twitter account was compromised in an apparent sim-swapping attack. The attacker immediately began tweeting links to a phishing website:

The phishing website asks users to connect their wallet to claim this $FCKSEC meme token:

Users then unwittingly sign a setApprovalForAll() transaction, granting the phisher the ability to transfer their assets. We can see the attacker's address has inflows of $760,000 within the same time period:

So far the biggest individual losses are:

  • $35.6k in BEN

  • $31.9k in HEX

  • $30.4k in USDC

  • $8.5k in JESUS

  • $8k in 0X0

  • $6.5k USDT

Stay safe out there folks!

A few weeks ago I fell for a phishing scam (fake Linkt Toll road SMS). I received a verification code after entering my card details and entered into the website. It turned out this was a code to have my card added to a Google Pay device. I instantly realised what had happened and jumped on the CBA NetBank app to have my card stopped and a replacement one issued. Luckily, no transactions had occurred so I figured I was in the clear.

A couple of weeks later, my new card arrived which I activated. The next day almost $6000 worth of transactions appeared for a business in Thailand. Turns out that when my new card was activated, CBA also re-activated the fraudulent Google Pay device allowing them to make payments on my OLD card.

I contacted CBA and they de-activated my card again and removed the Google Pay device. The guy at CBA submitted a fraud claim and admitted that this was a CBA error and the old card on the Google device never should have been re-activated.. he said it was a system error and the money would be returned.

Just heard back from the fraud claim today and it has been declined.. Can you guys tell me if I am going crazy here? How can this be my fault when I cancelled the card straight away. Surely no reasonable person can expect that this old card registered on devices could suddenly be re-activated?!?

*EDIT*Thanks guys.. In hindsight I should have called and reported as fraud and now I've learned my lesson. I think the way they have designed the google pay token system is stupid and more people should be aware of this. However, I have still made an AFCA complaint and hoping that I can at least get some compensation.

*EDIT 2* Went directly to AFCA as everyone recommended and they ended up offering 80% compensation! Thanks so much guys :)
